AIBU?

Booked holiday apt but visitors can't use the pool

Booked apt with pool
Paid in full

Now I receive extra details from the owner and only the people staying at the apt can use the pool.
I booked it so my brother and his family can visit and use the pool.
Is the owner being unreasonable or am I ?

I'd have thought it was fairly obvious if you book somewhere with access to a communal pool it's not a free for all to invite other people to use it. Confused

Be careful with throwing caution to the wind and doing as you please: if it is for insurance reasons and something happens to one of your guests (who you have already been told you can't have there) or something is damaged poolside you may end up in trouble which would be a shame.

TBH I don't know why you would have assumed that it was OK for your brother and his family to visit and use the pool.

Whenever I have rented an apartment with a pool it was made pretty clear that only the people on the booking could use it and more often than not I have found that there is someone who lives in the complex full time who thinks it is their personal duty to ensure that only those people use the pool. (And in one complex thought that it was unacceptable for holidaymakers to actually have fun when he was trying to do his daily routine).

On the other hand though how would you feel if you booked the apartment and found that the pool area was full of people who were not staying there and made it feel overcrowded?

Ohdearme- do you pay insurance for people to use the pool if you have tenants

I pay a quarterly service charge that covers most things in whats called the common area of the apartment building. The pool and garden is part of the common area.

But I also have a separate policy for the inside of my apartment.

How many people got in the apartment is irrelevant.

The owners hasn't said 'you can only have up to four people from your apartment in the pool'

They have said anyone not staying there can't. Insurance may not extend to anyone not registered as staying.

Why don't you book the apt for you and the 3 kids that way they can all use the pool. Your brother and wife can stay in the other apartment and visit you?

I have a rental apartment in the Algarve, not only do we not allow anyone not staying in the apartment to use the pool, we also don't encourage inviting extras into the apartment. More people equals a lot more wear and tear - our place is kitted out for 6 people - add another family of 4 or 6 and there would be chaos. I'm sure it happens, there's no foolproof way of avoiding it, but if the maid found lots of extra bodies on one of her cleaning visits, she'd be straight on the phone to me

And sorry, just to add - applesetsail has explained it all very nicely.

It's quite obvious your brother does in fact want use of a pool. He just isn't prepared to pay for it.

Davos- it was kinda relevant when everyone was talking about the pool accommodating only the number of people who are staying in the apartments
That's why I mentioned it
The owner does state that only the number of renters can use the pool, so if I'd said 4, I would be allowed 4.
Lion- I'm not looking after 3 kids, thanks!!

Davis- right now my brother doesn't know anything about the pool

He booked his holiday in our family apt.

But I honestly wouldn't think twice about visitors using the pool if it had a pool

But you might have to think twice if it was against the rules of the community.

It won't be the apartment owner who's rule this is, but the rule of the community as a whole. It may well be that permanent residents have a clause in this rule to allow their visitors occasional use, but that this doesn't extend to temporary residents such as yourself.

Whoa! Didn't notice how long this thread was. The OP seems quite adamant that she's right, despite being told repeatedly she isn't. Grin

We stayed a villa in the canaries in the 90s where a family did exactly this. Parents booked themselves an apartment in the complex so they had use of pool, courts, sauna etc., their children, the partners and the grandchildren were booked into nearby apartments that had none of the facilities. They were over all day everyday.

I thought I was BU to begin with, but it turned out everyone felt the same. It was actually one of the reps that spoke to management and they all got kicked out. Although the family and most of all the Grandparents were clearly gobsmacked that there was an issue.

As the rep put it, you have paid to use the facilities as they are included in the cost of your holiday. They are not free.

There is a type of person in the world that take any situation and push the boundaries, regardless of the impact on others.

So I have to say, if I was at the apartment block you had booked and I twigged that non-guests were using the facilities I would complain, and would keep on complaining until they were kicked out.

Perhaps that is just me though...

Nope it's not just you. I wouldn't care if it were at a non-peak time, but I'm guessing this is not the case.

So your brother is going on holiday in Spain and has no interest in a pool?

Ok, well do you now realise why your assumption that you could invite guests to the pool was way off base?

Kitty- a holiday complex is different

Ftr- I wouldn't expect to go to a hotel or an apt complex and get visitors to use the facilities

I guess because this is a private residential apt I thought that the facilities due to the owners would defer to the renters. Obviously not.
