AIBU?

Booked holiday apt but visitors can't use the pool

Booked apt with pool
Paid in full

Now I receive extra details from the owner and only the people staying at the apt can use the pool.
I booked it so my brother and his family can visit and use the pool.
Is the owner being unreasonable or am I ?

Yes I think it's cheeky of you to have expected this. Basically your group would just get to use a pool for free in a private area. That's not right is it?

I think I'm actually going off the idea of using the pool at all ☹️

I would imagine it's a community rule as opposed to down to the owner. It's not an uncommon rule either.

I think YABU but in a style of just not thinking it through. Of course the people staying in a complex have exclusive use of the facilities, that would be normal. Is there no way your brother can book the same place?

To be fair, if I booked an apartment with a shared pool I would expect a certain amount of people round it.

I wouldn't expect those people to invite other people to use it. It maybe that it's happened before and people have complained they can't get use of the pool as there are too many people.

Then there is insurance for people who aren't paying totally at in the complex.

As pp said you wouldn't book at a hotel and then expect your family to all be able to use the facilities.

If I had paid for an apartment with a communal pool and someone from another apartment invited along their family who hadn't paid and because of them I couldn't get a lounger or into the pool, I'd be annoyed. Unless you're booking a villa to yourself or an apartment with a private pool, I think it was wrong of you to assume you could bring family in.

Dolly, I think the rule should have been made clearer before the booking. I've never stayed in an apartment complex with communal pools, so I wouldn't have realised that you couldn't invite people over.

Maybe ask the owner, and make clear you only wanted the apartment for the pool and that your brother and his family are only visiting for a certain amount of days and that you'll make sure only 6 or whatever amount of people each appartment is allowed go into the pool at one time.

How many apartments share the pool?

Its a very small private complex, so not holiday village .

So can I not invite them over at all?
What about the garden?
Where do you draw the line?

Surely it's obvious you can't invite extra people , I don't know why you would think otherwise.

Looks like 6 apts

Our apt sleeps 4
There would be 6 in total, so 2 extra people

It's obviously not obvious, otherwise I wouldn't be asking

Seems reasonable to me. And obvious to be honest. I wouldn't expect to need to tell people that.

It was very cheeky of you to expect that people who hadn't hired the apartment could just come along and use the community facilities.

Also depending on the country and complex it might have a life guard who won't allow everyone by the pool if you all turn up. It's no different to not be allowed in to use a hotel pool if you are not a resident.

I know it's too late now but maybe a private villa would be a better option for you.

I'm not sure why the owner needs to make this clear in the first place. It's a bit of common sense that you can't have people over to use facilities who haven't paid to be there? That would apply in most places.

"I think I'm actually going off the idea of using the pool at all"

Why? Are the other apartments holiday lets or do people live there? If the latter I can understand why the owners have asked you to keep quiet.

There's no lifeguard
It's a small private pool in a small two storey 6 apt block

You can invite anyone you like over to use private facilities (as long as the apartment owner doesn't have a rule saying you can't) but not communal ones.

You should have booked a private villa if you wanted people over.

If you stay in a hotel you have to be a guest there to use the pool/facilities - same for apartments.

So your brother and his family is just 2 people. Is that correct?

Report
dollylucy · 18/08/2016 12:49

There were no villas available

Ok op, it's obvious to most people. Those with a bit of common sense.

You ask the owners, ideally before booking.

It depends, if there are two extra people in the gardens will it have a knock on to anyone else? What about insurance?

Surely you (presumably) adult brother will understand the predicament you are in.

Would you expect to your family to have access to a hotels facilities if you were staying there?

No, we are 2 people, but apt sleeps 4
They are 4 people

I dunno. We stayed in a residential type place in Mallorca and because people actually live there too I would 100% expect to be able to bring guests in. I would just take note of the quiet times and get your brother round then.
