To love fangirling

WoburnSands · 17/08/2016 18:57

I'm currently fangirling over a male celebrity - so am doing the usual - looking up every YouTube clip of him that's ever been recorded ... Looking up every internet nugget about him.

I was attracted to him cos of his good looks - coincidentally we appear to have had similar upbringings in SOME ways from what I've read!!

Ah there's worse ways to spend a weekday evening !!

Autocorrect at first changed 'similar' upbringings to 'solidarity' upbringings - as far as I know neither of us was brought up by a 1980s Polish political party ....

SID VICIOUS!! Not surprised you didn't get it as he's better known as part of a group.....

Well I think it's the being dead didn't help

raisedbyguineapigs · 18/08/2016 00:24

Sid and Nancy was retreaded a couple of weeks ago apparently for its 30th anniversary. Something else you could watch. I can't picture him. I'll google tomorrow...

KoalaDownUnder · 18/08/2016 00:29

I had no idea that adult women did this. (Not judging, just genuinely Shock)

Also, I am just relieved it's not Cliff Richard!

WoburnSands · 18/08/2016 01:01

raisedbytheguineapigs - yeah I read a few of the reviews for this in the recent Sunday newspapers - I've never seen the film

Trashbox · 18/08/2016 01:08

I used to write weekly letters to Orlando Bloom in his LOTR days...

He never replied Sad

Just5minswithDacre · 18/08/2016 01:17

Koala Grin

Just5minswithDacre · 18/08/2016 01:18

So, just getting this straight, is 'fangirling' 'just' the act of being a fan or is there more to it?

WoburnSands · 18/08/2016 01:20

Koala - no Cliff Richard!

OP posts:
WoburnSands · 18/08/2016 01:22

Just5minswithDacre - it's a recent term I dont really use it much in real life - it's quite a 'broad church' tbh - it can mean just a fan I suppose or can mean going to concerts etc - I don't think the meaning.'a very precise iyswim

WoburnSands · 18/08/2016 01:23

Oooh, I love fangirling- just didn't realise it until tonight!

My username might be a clue as to who I'm fangirling at the moment Wink

I've always done it though, starting with Abba at the age of 6. Still love and follow most of those I've obsessed over fangirled over the years (isn't that what Twitter's for?). The one exception to this being Shakin Stevens, wtaf was that all about?!!!

Like previous posters, I've made friends, met some lovely people and done some amazing things through my fangirling.

OP yanbu Smile

WoburnSands · 18/08/2016 01:45

Thanks MrsOlly and yes that's absolutely what Twitter's for!!

Dacre, I would say that a fangirl (or fanboy) is someone who participates in a fandom.

So a fangirl writes fanfic, makes fan art, writes meta about their fandom, makes podcasts, has fandom friends, plays fan based games or spends a lot of time consuming stuff made by other fans.

It is most frequently female fans of scifi and fantasy, but also bands and films or TV shows in popular culture. It can be used really broadly to include people in any other fandom, like sports fandom, and people who don't collaborate with other fans.

The podcast fansplaining did an episode on what makes someone a fan, discussing fan girls and fan culture.
