Hello! Mumsnet Jobs team here. We've noticed this thread is fairly old now, and some of the information is out of date. We've put together this article of advice, tips and tricks to start working from home. Alternatively, you can look at the work from home opportunities on Mumsnet Jobs. We hope this is helpful!

I don't know anyone who works from home in rl but I see it all the time on mumsnet.

If you work from home, what is your job?

Obviously not referring to sahp here!

ExtraMushroomsPlease · 16/08/2016 22:45

Thank you for that ghosty sounds very varied and interesting, like my dream
job! I can well imagine the hours stretching to more than 20 though- as we know issues with young people are often far from simple and it's difficult to leave work at 5 and think no more of it until the next time your in the office! Good luck with developing your role and thank you for the info Smile

Run my own aviation business, so I do all the relevant paperwork that goes with it there's a lot

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 16/08/2016 22:50

Clerk to community council
Clerk to school governors
Book keeper to semiconductor research company
(So one foot in cutting edge, the other in the middle ages...)
Also school secretary, but they make me go into school for that Grin

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 16/08/2016 22:52

I'm a book dealer.

dottygamekeeper · 16/08/2016 22:54

Software support, presenting webinars and doing one to one training sessions, for a US based firm. I do go out to run face to face training sessions several days a month as well - good balance of working from home and getting out and about.

libertydoddle · 16/08/2016 22:55

Management consultant in public sector. Varies a lot but work from home on average 2 days per week.

BumblebeeBum · 16/08/2016 22:56

I run my own business renting and selling baby carriers. Love working for myself (integrity and flexibility) and working from home around the kids as a single Mum. Sometimes in my PJs! :)

Solasum · 16/08/2016 22:58

What sort of books Littlefluffy? Sounds interesting

blueshoes · 16/08/2016 22:59

In-house lawyer. I prefer to work and am more effective in the office but I can pretty much choose the days I work from home and often do (at least once a week) as I manage my own workload.

LordBuckley · 16/08/2016 22:59

Another freelance translator here.

wilkos · 16/08/2016 23:03

elliejjtiny · 16/08/2016 23:05

I don't work from home but DH is a writer for a magazine and works mostly from home.

snoringdog · 16/08/2016 23:09

People rent baby carriers BumblebeeBum?? Had no idea.

Mirandawest · 16/08/2016 23:39

I got into what I do slightly accidentally. Used to work in an accountancy practice and was trained at the place I work for now. I started doing some marking for them at some point and then when I stopped working for a while, I got into doing more marking. Got to know some of the other markers and one of them also worked in the distance learning section. Last year she mentioned that they were trying to find support tutors and I decided to apply. Was always a home based job and everything just fell into place.

TaterTots · 16/08/2016 23:49

This drives me mad. Every week my mum tells me she'll ring me on my 'day off' because I WFH one day a week
It's NOT a sodding day off!!!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 17/08/2016 00:02

Jewellery designer/goldsmith.

Own business and occasional contracts if I have time.

My dining room is my studio, until ds leaves home, then I can move into a proper studio.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 17/08/2016 00:29

Solasum - anything that's worth money! I buy job lots of books - usually people who have died and it's their lifelong collection. I sell anything from antiquarian books from the 1800s to rare out of print books from the last 50 years or so. It's surprising what is worth money and what's not.

missingmumxox · 17/08/2016 00:58

Registered Nurse, do consultations over the phone and write reports on them

CaoNiMao · 17/08/2016 06:12

I'm an editor/proofreader.

ButtonBoo · 17/08/2016 06:37

Education Performance Manager. I was full time. Then went down to 4 days a week with extended hours after DD1 was born. Now work 2 long days at home and 2 regular days in the office. But I commute 4 hours a day so I think they were sympathetic!

SlimCheesy2 · 17/08/2016 06:40

I develop projects for the charity sector for external funding. I review and write project reports. I used to do loads and travelled extensively. Now work from home almost exclusively (London 3 days every couple of months).

But work has been a bit slow lately and I am not sure what happens after the current project.

bettybyebye · 17/08/2016 06:47

I'm a procurement manager for a telecoms firm, totally home based but have to travel for meetings etc but generally manage my own diary for that. Many of my colleagues are home based/ take advantage of the flexible working offered by our company

TheUltimate · 17/08/2016 06:48

Volunteer Coordinator. WfH 2 days a week, 2 and a half days in the office. Like others, I can remote access my work network so it's exactly like being in the office and I have a work laptop so can work from anywhere that has wifi.

QuietTiger · 17/08/2016 06:51

Farmer/Farm Manager. I help DH run the farm and do all the banking, accounts and admin, and I also manage our sheep flock.

It's great most of the time as I manage my own time, don't have to speak to anyone I don't want to and can suit myself if I want to take time off to do something else. The downside is that the livestock always has to come first, as does the combining, hay-making, cattle management...etc. and it's very rare we ever manage to go on holiday without a row and an ultimatum from me
