Hello! Mumsnet Jobs team here. We've noticed this thread is fairly old now, and some of the information is out of date. We've put together this article of advice, tips and tricks to start working from home. Alternatively, you can look at the work from home opportunities on Mumsnet Jobs. We hope this is helpful!

-------------

I don't know anyone who works from home in rl but I see it all the time on mumsnet.

If you work from home, what is your job?

Obviously not referring to sahp here!

ifherbum, sorry for the delay in replying (been away) and thanks!

HCTurner, that sounds interesting. Can you say a bit about what the job involves?

Starling, it's nice to hear how much you like your job Smile. What exactly do you do?

Sapphire, the company I work for typesets scientific, technical and medical books and journals for academic publishers. I manage the process from receipt of manuscript (copy-editing, typesetting, proofreading, inexing, dealing with authors/editors and production staff) through to the final print/web/epub product. All the typesetting is done in Chennai, India, and I am the point of contact for some of our customers in the UK.

Thanks, HC. I'm an editorial freelancer (was previously in publishing), so have worked in alignment (if that's the phrase) with typesetters for years, but have never really thought about what they actually do beyond turning out the text!

Will you be doing the same kind of work when you go freelance, or something different?

HCTurner · 23/08/2016 21:39

Doing the same kind of work I hope Sapphire, though it's early days yet.

I've started a business. Working from home/ library/ pret because I'm all over town for meetings so investing in an office doesn't feel like it's necessary. We make job-sharing work, and the team is growing, so I think we'll need desks soon. And I reckon I'll miss being at home. BrewBrewBrew

In house lawyer, but I've wfh one day from home when I worked at a City law firm too. I do work incredibly hard at home, and the silence helps when you are drafting or reviewing a tricky document.

I like it as I can see DDs at 530 rather than 7 after the commute.

Hi,
I'm looking for something to do to earn some extra cash whilst looking after my 10 week old baby :) , . Would you suggest this ? Does it pay well plus does it take a lot of your time? Thanks

Tina, I think you might need to start a new thread or be more specific about what 'this' is that you are thinking about! There are lots of different jobs mentioned on this thread if you read through it; does anything fit your current experience and skills?

I work for a communications agency that does work on behalf of a lot of materials handling clients (among others). I worked in publishing as an editor/journalist before that for 10 years on B2B magazines in the logistics industry. (Cue lots of boring press trips and writing about stuff that doesn't make me moist.. LOL!)

Thank God I work from home now though - after a head injury and drug induced movement disorder, I look like I have Tourette's half the time. God knows how I would cope in an office again. I think I might have another mental breakdown... :-(
