To put a box dye over my freshly highlighted hair?

Just paid £70 to have my hair turned into a stripy yellow mess Sad in devastated. I love my natural hair colour and just wanted a few honey caramels putting through but didn't want a colour change at all. I've come out with a complete mess.

It's yellow all over, stripy and the stripes start about 2cm from my scalp so it looks a few weeks old already.

I want it sorted immediately as I'm off out tonight and going on holiday tomorrow. Can I put a light ash blonde hair dye over my hair? Will this help blend it all a bit more?

Please help SadSad

What sort of holiday are you going on? If you're going somewhere hot and sunny and planning on swimming in chlorinated pools I'd strongly suggest no more dye before you go. I had a similar situation a few years ago and did dye it myself to try and fix it, but a couple of days into that holiday my hair was frazzled and breaking all over. It took me months to get it back in good condition. Can't be certain it was the double dyeing, but, but it's certainly never been that bad before or since!

Hope the purple shampoo gives you something closer to what you were after.

When I accidentally orange my hair I got an ash blonde dye, put it on wet hair for only 5 minutes and rinsed it out, it kind of toned toned the orange quite well.

Tesco is my only option right now so bleach London is not an option unfortunately. DH has just left to get me the purple one and wine.

I've emailed the salon along with photos. They closed at 7 but will hopefully hear back tomorrow to book in when I get back.

FruitCider the highlights are now where near the same colour as my natural hair. I wanted to keep my natural colour and just have a few tiny shimmers of honey running through the ends and underneath. I didn't want thick highlights absolutely covering my head.

My DH never notices when I've had my hair done and even he gasped when I stepped out the car. Maybe artificial lighting is dimming down the yellow but I assure you all it needs fixing. It's very ginger spice circa 1990.

OP honey blonde is nowhere near your natural colour and was always going to give a dramatic result, did you mean you wanted ombré rather than highlights if you just wanted them on the ends?

FortVenturer · 15/08/2016 20:26

It's not a beachy holiday, MissP, so I should be ok. Although it will be sunny.

I'm halfway through the development time on my strand test. Nothing drastic so far.

there's two touch of silver shampoos...one for frequent use, which is basically a purple colour shampoo, and the other one with the purple dye/toner in it....I think that one maybe called brightening

but do scrutinise the bottles to make sure you get the right one....the one you want for anti yellowing says not to use more than once or twice a week.

is the darker colour your natural hair with no hair dye at all on?

FramptonRose · 15/08/2016 20:34

It honestly doesn't look that bad.
I would not put anymore dye on it, that is coming from someone who has turned my hair all colours of the rainbow in an effort to fix mistakes before.
Touch of silver (the purple shampoo) is a massive help. I promise, I had to use this on my last attempt to home dye my hair to a blonde, which left it more copper. It took a few washes but did massively calm it down.
I have thrown the towel in now and get a hairdresser to come in and bleach my hair every 8 weeks Smile

FruitCider · 15/08/2016 20:34

But the base colour in the pic you showed is more ashy than your base colour, so the blonde will be a different shade. Also that's more of an ombré, did you ask for ombré or highlights? Did you ask for honey blonde or just showed them the pic?

absolutelynotfabulous · 15/08/2016 20:34

I think it looks fine, even if it's not quite what you asked for. I reckon it'll fade in about a week.

If this happens to me (I do my own so you can imagine...) I take a brown cosmetic pencil to it until it tones down a bit. If you want it to look ashier, just use Touch of Silver or similar.

Wouldn't you have needed a new base colour to achieve that look? Your base colour looks much warmer and lighter than the picture.

FortVenturer · 15/08/2016 20:38

I showed the pic and asked for a few subtle shimmery highlights through the ends. The stylist said it'll look two tone to just do ends so will take them all the way up to the scalp (by this she obviously meant 2cm away from the scalp) but keep it a similar colour so it'll all blend nicely and wouldn't look too different to when I arrived but will give that shimmer I was after because she'd add layers to the ends.

I cannot wait for my purple toner to arrive. There's no way I'm making it out tonight now!

You have more red tones in your base colour than the picture, again the highlight colour you have got is the one I would expect from your hair colour. Your hairdresser should have explained that the colour you wanted in your pic was not achievable, however your hairdresser did you give you honey blonde hair lights which I gather is what you asked for? Seems like poor communication on both sides.

Diglet · 15/08/2016 20:39

The gap between your scalp and the dyed bit is a bit amateur hour. Sad.
TBH It looks ok but it's looks like you had your hair dyed a few weeks ago and the colour is growing out.

The students at the hairdressers I use would be failed if they left such a big gap.

Really? It only looks about 0.5cm! Which is about right unless you request a fine weave and lots of foils are used.

midcenturymodern · 15/08/2016 20:44

Purple shampoo isn't going to make it more honey. I bleach mine to yellow and use purple toner and purple shampoo to get it to platinum. Don't you want yours browner rather than brighter?

Maybe this? www.amazon.co.uk/Scott-Cornwall-Colour-Restore-Toner/dp/B01C2YOVBK/ref=lp_1749726031_1_1_a_it?srs=1749726031&ie=UTF8&qid=1471290103&sr=8-1

I use the platinum version. you can get all the colours in boots

They also do a stripper www.scottcornwall.com/correct.html

Excited101 · 15/08/2016 20:46

Eeek! How do they think ombré or baylagae is done then if 'it'll look two tone'?! Change hairdressers op, the highlights aren't bad but they are a bit 90s stripey.

gingerbreadmanm · 15/08/2016 20:51

if ur hair is natural.inbetween the highlights e.g. never been dyed. dont put an ash blonde on it will lighten all your hair.

your best bet is taking the top section of hair about 1 - 1.5cm from your parting on both sides and dyeing over that section with a dark blonde dye either base 8 or 7. this would give you the effect you were after.

i would then keep using the purple shampoo on the blonde.

FortVenturer · 15/08/2016 20:52

Fruit, I wasn't expecting to come out with hair like the girl in the picture as it is a different base colour, length, everything. I used it to show where I wanted the highlights putting. I specifically said no orange, yellow, reds and then chose a colour from the little book that was called ash honey and looked ideal. I wasn't told it would look yellow ok my head. I do not know ins and outs of hairdressing so would never know what colour a dye would go on my hair compared to someone else's.

My strand test is complete. It didn't go green or grey. I took only a yellow strip and It seems to have turned it into a similar colour to my natural hair. That's a good sign isn't it?

I had balayage done a few weeks ago and it properly messed up the first time. Was supposed to be caramel on ,y very dark brown hair and I had what looked like 5cm of root growth with ginger hair. Not a good look at all! Thankfully I asked on a Facebook makeup group and someone said go back, which I wouldn't have done myself. I did and she fixed it, much more blonder and multi tonal but she also advised me to use that purple shampoo and my hair has got blonder and stripped out the other shades that were left of red. The ends are now quite a bit lighter than I wanted so I have stopped using it. Shame you aren't nearby as I have a whole bottle of the stuff that I won't use.

However, it still doesn't look anything like the picture I showed, which had the dark further down and more highlights through the ends, I have completely different hair colour rather than highlights, but it doesn't look too bad so I'm living with it until another time when I can make sure I get exactly what I want.
