I need some antidote to Olympic negativity.

Mine:

*Murray and Del Potro's hug at the net at the end of the final

  • Diego Hipolyto's joy at his silver medal and the celebrations with his team mate winning bronze in the same event
  • The beauty and skill of the synchronised swimming routines
  • The 100m runner from Singapore in the preliminary rounds who couldn't stop bouncing up and down and pointing at the Singapore flags on his face and clothes. *Simone Biles - just everything about her! *The female runner who lost a shoe in her race and finished anyway
  • Yusra Mardini on the refugee team (the won who saved so many people from the sea when their boat capsized on escaping Syria) winning her swimming heat, even though she didn't qualify *Wayne van Niekerk's world record and post race interview
  • The support and team spirit among the women's heptathalon competitiors *Yusain Bolt, of course. *Max Whitlock's surprise double gold
  • Fiji's gold in the Rugby 7s, their first every Olympic medal

I'm sure there are more but those are my first thoughts

So many great moments, most of which have already been posted.

I agree with the PP who highlighted the diving commentator's hilarious "I don't know what's going on, the lights are on and the pool's green" comment which genuinely made me laugh out loud.

Mo, of course. The supportiveness of the heptathletes towards each other. Max Whitlock's unexpected floor gold. Bryony Page. The entire track cycling team getting at least one medal (and BBC, give Jo Rowsell Shand a job when she retires - she's ace). Andy Murray, in everything from his carrying the flag to his gold medal to his hug with Del Potro to his correction of Inverdale. The Brazilian gymnast who finished third to Max (Arthur something?) saluting his flag as he stood on the podium. Tom & Dan's delight at their bronze. Simone Biles' brilliance. New Zealander Julie Brougham representing her country at the age of 62. William Fox Pitt finishing 12th in the world in the eventing after having been in a coma ten months ago. Oleg V...I could go on and on.

But the standout moment for me will be Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro. I ride, so I always follow the equestrian sports, but I have a few issues with some of the training methods behind elite dressage and the way judges reward those methods. For once Charlotte wasn't leading at the start of the individual due to a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes in the team test. And then they came out and demonstrated all that's good not only in dressage but in riding in general; horse and rider in perfect harmony (and it was perfect - every single judge gave them a score of 10 for "harmony between horse and rider") with Valegro the very epitome of the "happy athlete". Charlotte's tears as she rode out on a loose rein, smiling and waving and hugging her once-in-a-lifetime horse, knowing this was likely to be their last big competition together and they'd gone out at the top, reminding us what dressage should be about but all too often isn't.

Awww, the Brownlee brothers' floor hug at the finish line. They seem like such genuinely lovely guys. So pleased for them.

What a fabulous race by both of them.
And it was a lovely hug on the floor!

IPokeBadgers · 19/08/2016 10:12

For me it has mostly been the gymnastics: was thrilled by Max Whitlock taking the 2 medals in the same day, as well as watching young Amy Tinkler taking her bronze.

BUT it was the two Brazilians getting their podium places: Diego Hypolita and Arthur Mariano were so overwhelmed with their silver and bronze in the gymnastics.....if ever there was an example of what pure joy looked like it was those two men winning at their sport, in their home country. Just lovely to watch and probably my favourite bit of the games.

MrsFarm · 19/08/2016 10:15

Being Irish, it has to be the O Donovan brothers winning their Silver medal in Rowing and every interview they did. Totally down to earth and so funny!
This is just one www.independent.ie/sport/rio-2016-olympics/watch-the-odonovan-brothers-stopped-their-postrace-interview-for-a-touching-sporting-moment-after-winning-silver-34960586.html

No negativity in this household and so pleased I set the alarm for 1.30am to watch Jade Jones and Usain win. Jade's was one of my highlights along with:

Sophie Hitchon's jig of pure joy
Laura Trott - everything
Jason Kenny - his lunge in the home straight in the Keirin.
Valegro - awesome

Hepzibar · 19/08/2016 22:12

Still sticking with Andy Murray as my number one highlight.

Second the Brownlee Brothers. Their dad "my little lads" Grin

Third - Nick Skelton. Awesome. And his son's tweet. A photo of his dad saying "that's what a hero looks like - my dad". Brilliant, just brilliant sob

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/08/2016 22:23

Delighted for Nick Skelton.

Gooseysgirl · 19/08/2016 22:27

Another vote for the O'Donovan brothers, their interviews on RTÉ are hilarious Grin Andy Murray and Del Potro's match is a close second, it was a fantastic match, had everything! I have really enjoyed watching all the velodrome events and the diving.

SpaghettiMeatballs · 19/08/2016 22:37

Andy Murray correcting awful Inverdale (obviously)

Mo Farrah falling and getting up and winning.

Greg Rutherford's interview with Phil. Found myself welling up when Phil rubbed his arm and said 'you'll always be an Olympic champion; that can't be taken away'.

Rowing commentary. Ace as always.

Found Nick Skelton's medal ceremony today very emotional.

PinguForPresident · 19/08/2016 22:57

The womens hockey team winning their gold just now. Incredible!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 19/08/2016 22:58

Mine too!

OverAndAbove · 19/08/2016 23:41

The hockey was brilliant. Maddie Hinch is a complete star!

manicinsomniac · 20/08/2016 03:16

Yes, definitely Nick Skelton and the Hockey today.

Also, only a snap view of it but Tajikistan got its first ever Olympic medal tonight - gold in men's hammer.

I've got another couple.

When I was a wee girl,I loved Nick Skelton and I was absolutely delighted that he won gold. I loved his reaction on the podium, all gruff and trying to hold it together, but clearly overcome with emotion.

Also I watched a tae kwondo bronze match last night, and the Brazilian guy won. He was engulfed by the audience and their delight was amazing

Last night I had TV on with Olympics, and laptop on with Cincinnati tennis, watching Andy Murray. Good night all round for sport.
