I need some antidote to Olympic negativity.

Mine:

*Murray and Del Potro's hug at the net at the end of the final

  • Diego Hipolyto's joy at his silver medal and the celebrations with his team mate winning bronze in the same event
  • The beauty and skill of the synchronised swimming routines
  • The 100m runner from Singapore in the preliminary rounds who couldn't stop bouncing up and down and pointing at the Singapore flags on his face and clothes. *Simone Biles - just everything about her! *The female runner who lost a shoe in her race and finished anyway
  • Yusra Mardini on the refugee team (the won who saved so many people from the sea when their boat capsized on escaping Syria) winning her swimming heat, even though she didn't qualify *Wayne van Niekerk's world record and post race interview
  • The support and team spirit among the women's heptathalon competitiors *Yusain Bolt, of course. *Max Whitlock's surprise double gold
  • Fiji's gold in the Rugby 7s, their first every Olympic medal

I'm sure there are more but those are my first thoughts

Del Potro is very cute.

emotionsecho · 15/08/2016 21:57

Another moment - Andy Murray correcting John Inverdale by telling him that Venus and Serena Williams have four Olympic Gold medals each. Love you even more for that Andy, it's not the first time Andy has praised the achievements of Serena and Venus Williams. John Inverdale is a twat who doesn't rate women at all, high time he was put in a museum with all the other dinosaurs.

manicinsomniac · 15/08/2016 22:01

Yes, emotions - loved Andy's correction. I haven't agreed with some of the accusations about the sexist commentary but that was a really bad one.

AnyFucker · 15/08/2016 22:01

I second that, ee

I love Andy Murray. He's got a bad press at times but I just don't see it.

x2boys · 15/08/2016 22:04

Totally missing point of the thread but ds1 attends the same primary school that Jason Kenny went to and will also be going to the same secondary school they will be beside themselves in september !

backinthebox · 15/08/2016 22:15

Haha, no. But I did go looking for her. I was absolutely shameless about jumping on anyone famous or successful that I came across but didn't find any actual TV presenters. Found the studio on Copacabana Beach though!

NotYoda · 15/08/2016 22:16

back

I mentioned the women's rugby earlier. I am in awe of them

Hepzibar · 15/08/2016 22:23

Andy Murray.

If I Had to choose only one athlete to win a gold medal, it would be Andy Murray. Without a shred of doubt.

Cried lots.

Laughed - the O'donavan brothers. Hilarious interview. Loved them.

Second favourite- Max Whitlock. Dignified.

Just LOVE the Olympics Grin

emotionsecho · 15/08/2016 22:26

Me neither Any, to me he has a dry sense of humour which I like.

backinthebox · 15/08/2016 22:27

NotYoda had them in my office on Sunday:

Loads of ones already mentioned AAAAND seeing my ex boyfriend on TV, he's a coach and the camera keeps cutting to him, he hasn't aged well, lol. I'm friends with him on fb so I'm getting to see loads of behind the scenes pictures etc.

dontcallmelen · 15/08/2016 22:42

Agree with all pp so many outstanding performances, for me Andy Murrays match with Del Potro was truly magnificent, the hug at the end had the tears flowing, a true sportsman of the highest order.

Felascloak · 15/08/2016 22:49

bad I'm in that position too. Its weird!

manicinsomniac · 15/08/2016 22:52

Lovely moment for the Italian winner of the Omnium Race, getting gold even after that horrendous* crash (pleased for Mark Cavendish but, seeing as he caused the crash, I think probably the right man won!!)

  • I don't follow cycling so maybe it wasn't horrendous but it seemed nasty to me!

Noregretsatall · 15/08/2016 22:56

When the commentator of the men's omnium said 'Mark Cavendish has cocked his leg' he meant head obvs and did correct himself but it made me laugh...,loudly!

BadToTheBone · 15/08/2016 23:24

Felas wonder if it's the same guy? Lol

ginghambox · 15/08/2016 23:37

When Mo Farah fell, unfortunately he got up and won.
Hendrik Stenson poking an alligator.
The F/phillipino divers.

AnyFucker · 15/08/2016 23:40

Did anyone else think Mark Cavendish came across as a bit if a nob in his post race interview ?

maddiemookins16mum · 15/08/2016 23:41

Anything that avoids "Sir" Steve Areshole Redgrave.

seahorse106 · 15/08/2016 23:51

Charlotte Dujardin winning an individual dressage gold on Valegro today. They really are magical and I had tears in my eyes watching them.

Felascloak · 15/08/2016 23:51

I don't want to say which sport in case I out myself! It would be weird though :)

Slippersandacuppa · 15/08/2016 23:52

Yes AF

I got more and more angry with him as the interview went on. Where was the eye contact??? DH reckons I was just biased because I can't see how the crash was accidental. Hm.

So many highlights - how good must it feel? The amount of effort they've all put in is inspirational. I wonder if 40 is too old to pick a sport and start training?

Charlotte and Blueberry is one of my favourites though. Lovely seeing someone who lets her horses be horses and trains them with compassion win.

emotionsecho · 15/08/2016 23:53

Any his crash into the leader of the race looked suspect to me, I was surprised he wasn't disqualified.

When Mark Cavendish went to be interviewed he said just before the interview started that "The crowd would all be chanting and cheering if it was for Bradley."Confused I think he is a bit of a nob and seems to have a chip on his shoulder, whenever he hasn't achieved a win or a medal in an event he always seeks to blame the loss on someone/everyone else, it's never his fault.

manicinsomniac · 15/08/2016 23:54

Any It crossed my mind, yes. But really, they're athletes, not speakers/performers and shouldn't necessarily be expected to have the ability to charm an audience in interview (think Andy Murray!) He tried his best I think, complimenting all the support team etc, in the face of exhaustion and probably slight disappointment.

Slight aside but I've just watched weightlifting for the first time - incredible! The winners are deadlifting the weight of 3 - 4 adult women from a squat position. How the hell are they protecting their backs and knees?!?

Cavendish didn't crash into the leader. He crashed into a Korean rider Park, Viviani was behind him. Viviani later nearly took out a French rider in a similar fashion later in the race.
