I need some antidote to Olympic negativity.

Mine:

*Murray and Del Potro's hug at the net at the end of the final

  • Diego Hipolyto's joy at his silver medal and the celebrations with his team mate winning bronze in the same event
  • The beauty and skill of the synchronised swimming routines
  • The 100m runner from Singapore in the preliminary rounds who couldn't stop bouncing up and down and pointing at the Singapore flags on his face and clothes. *Simone Biles - just everything about her! *The female runner who lost a shoe in her race and finished anyway
  • Yusra Mardini on the refugee team (the won who saved so many people from the sea when their boat capsized on escaping Syria) winning her swimming heat, even though she didn't qualify *Wayne van Niekerk's world record and post race interview
  • The support and team spirit among the women's heptathalon competitiors *Yusain Bolt, of course. *Max Whitlock's surprise double gold
  • Fiji's gold in the Rugby 7s, their first every Olympic medal

I'm sure there are more but those are my first thoughts

I went to the same school as one of the GB rowers who medalled. Grin Grin Grin at the idea of it being a public school, it was pretty damn rough!

Just seen a lovely moment in the women's 5k heats, if anyone else is watching.

backinthebox · 16/08/2016 14:54

It's great to think that when all us working class couch potatoes go and buy our lottery tickets and our pies, we're enabling all the public school kids to row all day and win glory for the UK. Just as it should be.

Urgh, I hate this attitude. Don't just sit there then, buying lottery tickets and waiting for the luck to come to you - get out there and DO SOMETHING! I did something extraordinary with my life, something fewer than 600 women in the UK do and that people tell me every day I am lucky to be able to do. It's not a sport, but it is thrilling and exciting. I came from a working class background, went to a crap school on a big council estate. Luck featured, mainly being in the right place at the right time to have 2 chance conversations, but the rest of it was sheer hard work, blood, sweat and tears. Most of the UK athletes attract the cash because they WORK HARD, not because of the school they go to. Of the men's fours gold medal team, 2 went to public school, 2 were state educated.

JamieVardysParty I agree with you regarding Wayde van Niekerk. Such an achievement. I'm also really, really pleased for Luvo Manyonga for his silver in the men's longjump. He's from Mbekweni, near where DH comes from (Paarl) and to get to where he has now, despite his background and the adversity he has faced, is amazing. V proud in general of Team SA's performance, as an honorary Saffa!

Also inordinately proud of Team GB.

JamieVardysParty · 16/08/2016 15:23

Agreed London - I read an article yesterday where his parent's neighbours clubbed together to get the family DSTV so that they could watch him compete. Sounds like he has had such supportive people in his life.

I'm in Limpopo and everyone is just waiting for Caster. Even people who aren't into sport, not interested in the Olympics are talking about her and how proud the area is of her. Someone has put posters up saying "Go Caster Go". We're not even that close to where she grew up!

NonnoMum · 16/08/2016 16:05

Oh, and Fiji winning their first gold and the banks clings they were so proud...

NonnoMum · 16/08/2016 16:05

banks CLOSING

powershowerforanhour · 16/08/2016 17:57

Another nice one with the gold medal winning Dutch sailor sailing her dinghy alongside the Irish silver medallist to hug her and they both jumped into the sea grinning their heads off.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 16/08/2016 18:41

Really looking forward to Caster's race tomorrow. The right wing press are still spouting vile conjecture about her over here Angry but she remains dignified and deserves to win

morningtoncrescent62 · 16/08/2016 18:49

Very pleased to see Oleg Vernyayev winning the men's parallel bars - he looked over the moon. He was such a good sport when at the last minute he lost out on all-round gold, and I've been hoping he would win one of the individual finals.

JamieVardysParty · 16/08/2016 19:38

I cried when Oleg won. Been following his story since London and he has had to put up with so much and he just has the best attitude. DH wants to take him out for a pint Grin

Amy Tinkler winning bronze just now is also pretty special. No one can touch the Americans especially on floor so it really was a battle for third and she just came out and nailed her routine.

PurpleDaisies · 16/08/2016 19:40

I cried at Amy tinkler getting bronze.

emotionsecho · 16/08/2016 22:05

Another moment - when Anita Wlodarcyzk broke the world record in the hammer throw (which was fabulous) the commentator informed us that she had had nine boiled eggs for breakfast, it just tickled me.

AnyFucker · 16/08/2016 22:07

Laura. Awww Smile

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/08/2016 23:26

Laura Trott & Jason Kenny becoming possibly the most decorated couple in Olympic history.

Chris Hoy on his feet cheering Jason to equal his record.

NeedAnotherGlass · 16/08/2016 23:33

That was one hell of a ride by Jason Kenny!
And what a nightmare of a race.

originalmavis · 16/08/2016 23:55

Almost all of it. Not the sulky losers and the stroppy handshake refusers (they ought to be banned from competition).

I'd hate to see their home insurance bill. They must have more gold in there than a Russian oligarch's gaff.

AllieinWonderland · 17/08/2016 02:09

Simone Biles, of course, and Katherine Grainger's silver in the rowing despite being forty - deep admiration for her!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 17/08/2016 06:13

So tired this morning - the tension with Jason Kenny's race. Fantastic !

Lulooo · 17/08/2016 06:19

Mob falling but picking himself up and winning nevertheless.

Lulooo · 17/08/2016 06:21

*Mo

iKeepDancingintheDark · 17/08/2016 08:41

Laura seems to be a lot more gushing about Jason than he is about her; I hope for her sake that's not a warning sign!

Seriously? Some people are just more gushing than others. He's known for being cool headed and calm. It's a bit harsh to speculate that they have/will have relationship problems.

purplevase4 · 17/08/2016 09:10

Amy Tinkler winning a bronze in gymnastics yesterday and the other lady (Bethan?) winning a silver in the trampolining. Also the gold medal in the diving and Max Whitlock winning his two golds in the space of an hour. And Sophie Hitchon getting her hammer bronze, fabulous.

A set of triplets from Estonia all running the ladies marathon.

I hope Jason Kenny and Laura Trott have lots of kids - those genes need to be spread around a bit, same with the Theisen-Eatons ;)

purplevase4 · 17/08/2016 09:18

Sorry Bryony Page not Bethan. Almost the best actually. How cool to get a medal trampolining. And I loved it yesterday when Clare Balding said after Amy's medal ceremony - if you're 12 and you're watching this, this could be you in 4 years' time in Tokyo because Amy is only 16 and getting her GCSE results when she gets home!
