I need some antidote to Olympic negativity.

Mine:

*Murray and Del Potro's hug at the net at the end of the final

  • Diego Hipolyto's joy at his silver medal and the celebrations with his team mate winning bronze in the same event
  • The beauty and skill of the synchronised swimming routines
  • The 100m runner from Singapore in the preliminary rounds who couldn't stop bouncing up and down and pointing at the Singapore flags on his face and clothes. *Simone Biles - just everything about her! *The female runner who lost a shoe in her race and finished anyway
  • Yusra Mardini on the refugee team (the won who saved so many people from the sea when their boat capsized on escaping Syria) winning her swimming heat, even though she didn't qualify *Wayne van Niekerk's world record and post race interview
  • The support and team spirit among the women's heptathalon competitiors *Yusain Bolt, of course. *Max Whitlock's surprise double gold
  • Fiji's gold in the Rugby 7s, their first every Olympic medal

I'm sure there are more but those are my first thoughts

I think it's been a really good games so far.

Stand out moments for me have been:

The men's eight winning rowing gold and then being described as 'absolute gladiators' by the cox.
Max Whitlock's double gold.
The two Brazilian gymnasts who won silver and bronze unexpectedly.
Chris Mears and Jack Laugher in the diving.
Andy Murray.
All of the track cycling.

And too many more to mention.

Don't know what I'll watch when it's all over!

Mo
The O'Donnovan brothers interviews,

raviolidreaming · 15/08/2016 19:36

KJT and Belgium doing the womens high jump

Swoosh, me too! It was lovely to see KJT and Thiam so supportive and encouraging of each other.

specialsubject · 15/08/2016 20:00

With racism and crime fairly rife at these games, we need all the good stuff. I loved that marriage proposal, she nods and he yells the chinese equivalent of 'yes' ! Many years to them both!

Maiyakat · 15/08/2016 21:01

I was lucky enough to be at the World Championships last year when Louis came second to Max on pommel. He was incredibly gracious there. He lost out on Gold at 2012 despite getting the same score as the guy who won, lost out to Max at the Worlds and lost out to him again yesterday. I think most of us would be a bit gutted, even if it's your team mate who beat you.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/08/2016 21:04

The wee lassie on the trampoline did it for me.

This is so funny dh is Irish so was in stitches lol this is so typical

maddiemookins16mum · 15/08/2016 21:05

But Louis Smith made my skin crawl, sorry - not a fan.

Oysterbabe · 15/08/2016 21:05

Realising that I quite fancy Greg Rutherford.

manicinsomniac · 15/08/2016 21:05

^^
Oh, definitely. Especially if it's true that they don't get on all that well.

The female gymnasts, even across teams/countries, are exceptionally supportive and graceful I think. So many genuine hugs.

Valegro's test today, hoof perfect.

manicinsomniac · 15/08/2016 21:08

Sorry, cross post.

But I could agree with that too Oysterbabe ! Del Potro too.

Momma - that's Joseph Schooling from Singapore. Winning Singapore's first gold ever. He met Phelps at a training camp in Singapore a few years ago and then beat him in the butterfly, setting a new OR.

There has been a lot of unfair controversy about him over the past couple of years - his family have been fighting to get him out of compulsory National Service, he's been called a traitor for moving to the US to train and that he isn't even really Singaporean because he doesn't look Chinese.

Favourites for me have been:

Nathan Adrian winning the 50m freestyle, 16 years after he had last won a medal.
Oleg Verniaiev winning the men's AA gymnastics silver after seeing his funding cut, half the team defecting, having to train in substandard conditions and not able to practice certain elements as the gym is deemed too dangerous. Imagine how good he could be in the right environment.
Bryony Page just couldn't believe that she got a medal. Such a sweetheart.
Canada women's rowing silver - my friend is the coach.
The real sportsmanship and love between all the gymnasts, especially the women.
Van Niekerk by a mile - I've been following his career for a few years and now live in SA. It's just a phenomenal achievement which has been on the cards for a long time. All anyone was talking about today on TV, in the shop, at the gym etc was Wayde.
The Polish woman winning the hammer with a new WR and dedicating it to her friend and colleague who had died at 26 a few years ago.
Kim Collins still competing in the 100m at 40. He's a machine.

Team GB have made me even more proud than London, which I didn't think possible. To be second in the medal table is such an incredible achievement, I can't really put it into words.

Shylo · 15/08/2016 21:14

So many highlights but am surprised no one has mentioned Justin Rose in the golf ..... Essentially came down to one pitch and putt between him and Stenson. So so proud to have won for his country when the ball went in Smile

KenDoddsDadsDog · 15/08/2016 21:16

The O'Donovan brothers , brilliant craic.
The GB team pursuits
Max Whitlock
Trampoline silver

I've watched it every night after work , so many random sports. Loved it !

Felascloak · 15/08/2016 21:16

For me it was the Italian diver Tania Cagnotto winning bronze in the women's 3m diving yesterday. In 2012 I went to watch the final, she was in bronze all the way then messed up her last five. She came out to watch the medal ceremony bawling her eyes out, I felt so bad for her.
Yesterday was her last competition before retirement, she was in 4th all the way, then absolutely smashed her last ever competitive dive scoring 9s and finished third. Amazing.

Bryony Page's silver medal in trampolining. She was incredibly good and way better than expected. That was our first ever trampolining gold.

Jack Laugher and Chris Mears. (There may be a theme in what I watch)

I know its not very patriotic but I also loved Thiam winning the heptathlon after getting a on in 4 events. She was amazing.

Felascloak · 15/08/2016 21:18

Trampolining medal I mean. Duh.

SkydivingFerret · 15/08/2016 21:18

Bryony page crying on the floor so proud to have won. Mears and laugher winning gold.

Best by far was hearing charlotte dujardin had scored 93%, a bloody massive score, and when she collapsed over valegros neck after the test in tears, she knew it was brilliant

EDisFunny · 15/08/2016 21:21

I'm surprised at some of the favourite moments mentioned, e.g. wiggins sticking out his tongue during the national anthem, that was a least favourite moment for me!

I was very happy when the IsraelI joduko won bronze after having the Egyptian act so deplorably and refuse to shake hands. The Israeli showed so much grace and discipline.

backinthebox · 15/08/2016 21:30

What's my favourite Olympic moment so far? Well, I love a good Olympics, but for me so far my best moment has to have been going out on the piss with the Team GB rugby team wearing one of their medals! I no, I don't know them but they were in a very happy mood and ready to share their joy with everyone. I managed to meet Gary O'Donovan the irish rower too while his brother was trying to pee in a cup - he was fabulous. I hugged 12 silver medallists and 6 gold medallists in 24hrs - I've had an awesome Olympics, recovering now from my exertions so far (gold medal in partying, I think Grin) I'll give you this pic I got of Heather Stanning just after she won gold and before she spoke to any press - she's lovely:

to ask for your favourite Olympic moments so far
ajandjjmum · 15/08/2016 21:34

Justin Rose winning the golf Gold on the 18th green.

Hope those professionals who were so precious about playing saw how much it meant, and realised what they'd missed.

manicinsomniac · 15/08/2016 21:40

Okay, backinthebox I'm officially jealous! How did you get to do all that? Follow them out of the stadium and into the same bars??

Charlotte & Valegro. They absolutely nailed it today. Wonderful stuff.

Mo. Such incredible fight and determination to get up off the floor & win.

The fuckng useless, pathetic, overpaid, pampered England football team could learn so much from our amazing Olympic champions.

AmIthatbloodycold · 15/08/2016 21:43

My favourites so far

Andy leading Team GB at the opening ceremony

Michael Phelps game face to le clos

Laugher and Mears delight in their gold and in their friendship

The Brazilian gymnasts

Fiji winning the 7s

Juan Martin Del Potro storming back and beating Novak and Nadal (and looking good without his headband)

But my absolute fave is the same as my favourite London moment. - Andy Murray winning gold. Grit, tenacity and sportsmanship. I'm still on a high Smile

AnyFucker · 15/08/2016 21:45

back are you Clare Balding ? Smile
