I need some antidote to Olympic negativity.

Mine:

*Murray and Del Potro's hug at the net at the end of the final

  • Diego Hipolyto's joy at his silver medal and the celebrations with his team mate winning bronze in the same event
  • The beauty and skill of the synchronised swimming routines
  • The 100m runner from Singapore in the preliminary rounds who couldn't stop bouncing up and down and pointing at the Singapore flags on his face and clothes. *Simone Biles - just everything about her! *The female runner who lost a shoe in her race and finished anyway
  • Yusra Mardini on the refugee team (the won who saved so many people from the sea when their boat capsized on escaping Syria) winning her swimming heat, even though she didn't qualify *Wayne van Niekerk's world record and post race interview
  • The support and team spirit among the women's heptathalon competitiors *Yusain Bolt, of course. *Max Whitlock's surprise double gold
  • Fiji's gold in the Rugby 7s, their first every Olympic medal

I'm sure there are more but those are my first thoughts

Purple/OP

Louis Smith was really struggling, wasn't he? The vibe between he and Max was bad. But I think there's some background which I don't know about

emotionsecho · 15/08/2016 17:38

All our cyclists, truly exceptional. Also agree with whoever mentioned Chris Hoy and his interesting, knowledgeable commentary.

Another favourite moment was the diving commentator (Leon I think) when there was the hoo-ha about the Mexican divers and the will they, won't they re-take their dive and he came out with "I have no idea what's going on, they are, they aren't, the lights are on and the pool is green!" it just made me laugh.

There's just been another special moment but I don't want to provide a spoiler.

PurpleDaisies · 15/08/2016 17:40

I felt sorry for him-he must have been gutted since it was his only event and he'd fallen in the team final but I think he left his poker face on the plane. He said if he had to come second he was glad it was max that won but I have heard rumours that they don't like each other very much.

NotYoda · 15/08/2016 17:40

emotion

I love the diving commentator too

FadedRed · 15/08/2016 17:45

Just had one 'Olympic moment' watching Charlotte DuJardin winning her gold medal.
Tom and Dan's hug.
Max Whitlock and two golds- he seems such a lovel bloke.
Andy hugging Del Poto and patting him gently.
The Chinese divers and the marriage proposal (hope she really wanted to say yes though)
Adam Peaty, he's a lovely bloke too.

BikeGeek · 15/08/2016 17:51

Bryony Page got silver in the trampolining not bronze

lljkk · 15/08/2016 17:51

I am parochial, I only follow cycling....

The cyclist (small Dutch woman) who rode 10m along the safety boards in a track event (Kieran?). O M G.

Just hearing Laura Trott speak.

Gregory Bauge's legs :).

Cav doing a world class ride in the individual pursuit leg of Omnium.

That valiant American rider who nearly got a medal in women's road race.

NotYoda · 15/08/2016 17:53

lijkk

I liked how Chris Broadman voiced his anger about the safety of the road race course, following that sickening crash (wish I had not seen that)

NotYoda · 15/08/2016 17:57

Chris Boardman, even

lljkk · 15/08/2016 17:58

yeah, I'm glad CB spoke up, too.

Mommawoo · 15/08/2016 18:01

Not watching the Olympics but 2 stories that popped up on Facebook made me smile

The first Brazilian to win a gold medal was a black lady from the most notorious favela in Brazil. She won for Judo.

At the Beijing Olympics a young swimmer met his idol Michael Phelps and got a picture with him. At this years Olympics he beat Phelps in the butterfly race and I think set a new record?

Also the 2 divers from Phillipines, so happy even with a score of zero!

Pinkponiesrock · 15/08/2016 18:01

Watching Charlotte Dujardin retain her title, absolutely stunning Shock the partnership between her and Valegro is amazing!

emotionsecho · 15/08/2016 18:09

lljkk I think that Dutch woman cyclist should have won a medal for that aloneGrin.

AnyFucker · 15/08/2016 18:11

Andy Murray

Amongst many amazing moments me the best has to be Mo Farah getting up after his fall & going onto win gold. When he was interviewed after he was saying that 4 years of training could of disappeared in that moment but he got up & gave it his best. Just awe inspiring.

Brokenbiscuit · 15/08/2016 18:31

Mo Farah falling over, picking himself up again and winning the race.

Andy Murray hugging Del Potro after that amazing match last night.

All of the athletes from all countries getting their medals - I love to see them in that special moment when they know that all their hard work was worth it.

NeedAnotherGlass · 15/08/2016 18:32

Bryony Page got silver in the trampolining not bronze
Quite right, she did. (I had a late night watching tennis Grin)

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 15/08/2016 18:32

I'd rather athletes were distraught after failing to win a gold, rather than being satisfied with second or third place.

Rutherford and Ennis got golds last time out and should rightly be disappointed they've not matched their previous high standards.

I think that's been a real shift in the past 20 years or so, previously as a nation we'd be happy if they turned up and gave it their best shot, now we expect winners and rightly so, now they benefit from lottery funding and vastly improved facilities.

I was a bit 'bloody hell lads, reign it in, it's only a Bronze' when Tom Daley and his partner got that bronze for synchro diving.

I'd rather sportspeople would be gutted and resolve to do better next time, rather than celebrating a bronze like they were Phelps on their umpteenth gold.

This is a great thread. I haven't watched much yet (and feel inspired to now!).

I loved seeing the gymnasts who qualified as individuals being supportive of each other as they went around. Also seeing Gabby Douglas there again. I was surprised she got such a lot of abuse in the media (much of it quite racist) as I saw quite a few supportive looks and nods from her.

On a really trivial note I absolutely loved the Japanese team's habit of giggling and grinning when they finished, especially when they did well! Grin

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 15/08/2016 18:45

Me too giraffe but then I don't have a professional athlete's will to win and focus.

To get to where they are they have to be insanely competitive and should strive to be the best in every competition, not settle for a bronze or a decent finish or what have you.

Okay, there can only be one winner, but if it isn't you, deal with it, learn from it and do better next time rather than settling for it.

I don't think that's being negative, quite the opposite in fact.

swooosh · 15/08/2016 18:49

KJT and Belgium doing the womens high jump.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 15/08/2016 18:49

Bloody hell calm down Piers Morgan LikeDylan

Diego Hypolita and Arthur Mariano looking so overwhelmed with their silver and bronze in gymnastics.
Max Whitlock's amazing achievements in general.
Yusra Mardini winning her heat.
The North & South Korea selfie.
Simone Biles. Enough said!

I feel sorry for Louis Smith. He's been very public with his ADHD diagnosis and a big part of ADHD is hypersensitivity to criticism and a sense of underachievement and guilt/shame at any perceived failure. I know I wouldn't be able to cope in that sort of situation even if I was an incredible athlete (I'm not) so I think Louis does incredibly well to cope with the pressure, and yesterday it just all got too much for him.

People criticising him for shaking the hand of the American gymnast on the podium frustrated me. It's etiquette that silver shakes bronze and gold shakes both; no-one has criticised the other gymnasts for doing it that way.

cornishglos · 15/08/2016 18:59

Helen Glover and Heather Stanning winning gold again in the coxless pair.
