I need some antidote to Olympic negativity.

Mine:

*Murray and Del Potro's hug at the net at the end of the final

  • Diego Hipolyto's joy at his silver medal and the celebrations with his team mate winning bronze in the same event
  • The beauty and skill of the synchronised swimming routines
  • The 100m runner from Singapore in the preliminary rounds who couldn't stop bouncing up and down and pointing at the Singapore flags on his face and clothes. *Simone Biles - just everything about her! *The female runner who lost a shoe in her race and finished anyway
  • Yusra Mardini on the refugee team (the won who saved so many people from the sea when their boat capsized on escaping Syria) winning her swimming heat, even though she didn't qualify *Wayne van Niekerk's world record and post race interview
  • The support and team spirit among the women's heptathalon competitiors *Yusain Bolt, of course. *Max Whitlock's surprise double gold
  • Fiji's gold in the Rugby 7s, their first every Olympic medal

I'm sure there are more but those are my first thoughts

Manic, he was yapping on about his getting silver as being "click bait" or something.

And he took that rider down deliberately. I fully expected he would be disqualified. I have to say I don't know much about cycling though

I recognise a nob when I see one, however

powershowerforanhour · 16/08/2016 00:06

New Zealand dressage rider Julie Brougham finally getting a horse good enough to realise her dream of going to the Olympics aged 62

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/08/2016 00:09

Why would he take out a rider that was not in medal contention? Park wasn't a threat to his medal prospects.

Curlgurl · 16/08/2016 00:11

Mo winning the 10,000m after falling.
But it has to be Charlotte and Valegro. The way she collapsed over his neck when she finished and cried had tears streaming down my face. Such a talented pair. They are in sync with each other. I love how she calls him her best friend.

manicinsomniac · 16/08/2016 00:12

Why would he take the rider out deliberately? It wasn't one that was a threat to him/in an especially good position and they weren't involved in a sprint at the time. Even if he was prepared to deliberately knock someone down to win it would have to be worth the risk of a) being disqualified and b) falling off himself. In this case it surely wouldn't have been? He can't have known that the Korean rider would then skid into the leader.

The click bait thing was unfortunate but I wouldn't want to give an interview to the world after a race like that. I dread to think what might come out. He might be an awful person, he might be a lovely person. I have no idea. But I don't think it's judgeable on that one, mixed, interview.

Keri Anne Payne giving a lovely warm and gracious interview after missing out on a marathon swim medal in her last chance at the Olympics and emphasising being glad at having contributed to the popularity of the sport in this country.

Carl Hester's sportsmanship and horsemanship- he was so delighted with his test on a young horse and so pleased for Charlotte. Commentator quite rightly said how much he had done for British dressage but also the sport as a whole...horses seem to be ridden more lightly and sensitively than 20 years ago, the horrible Rollkur fad seems to have passed thanks in large part to them.

EddieHitler · 16/08/2016 00:23

I'm really enjoying this Olympics, but I think my favourite bit so far was watching Mo come back from his fall to get Gold, brilliant.

And today's dressage with Charlotte Dujardin was great too... never thought I'd ever say those words!

mixety · 16/08/2016 00:29

I thought Kerri Anne Payne's interview was really good too, power. She seemed so nice and genuine in what she was saying.

Memorably great moments for me:

  1. The video of Adam Peaty's nan watching him win, and her adorable tweets. Pride personified.
  1. Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow's excitement at getting bronze. Undiluted relief and happiness!
  1. Andy Murray's triumph in the tennis, and the tears from both him and Del Potro. Incredibly emotional and it felt like a very special moment between the two of them.
manicinsomniac · 16/08/2016 00:52

Athletics is interesting. I'm not surprised they've suspended the events but surely it's not fair on the heat of hurdlers that had to go before the decision was made. Would they re-run??

Chaz it was Viviani who was behind Mark Cavendish, Cavendish hit his bike sending him sailing down the track into an Australian rider and Park who were behind them. It looked like a calculated move on Cavendish's part as he looked behind and saw Viviani right on his back wheel next thing Cavendish has hit him and he's off his bike heading down the track on his back.

manicinsomniac · 16/08/2016 01:59

Probably not very amusing to him but I did have to laugh when that poor Chinese pole vaulter who was first up after the deluge came down into the swimming pool that used to be the mat. And to add insult to injury he didn't clear the height either. So much disgust on his face Sad Grin

Oh my goodness, I have a new second favourite (after Murray-del Potro). But I won't spoil it for all you normal people sleeping beauties.

The Aussie teenager Kyle Chalmers winning gold in the swimming.

Not just the win, but the footage of his Year 12 classmates going bonkers as he stormed home and touched the wall first.

Also his grandparents overcome with emotion watching back home in their lounge room. Bawled my eyes out!

No, it was Park he hit.

Sophie Hitchin her hammer bronze. Her little dance when she found out she'd got a meddle.

Made me love her Smile

iKeepDancingintheDark · 16/08/2016 09:06

Bradley Wiggins' rudeness was a low point of the Olympics for me. Although I am not surprised.

emotionsecho · 16/08/2016 09:36

Oops, sorry Chaz I've just re-watched the crash and you are quite right it was Park he hit, my apologiesBlush. Still looks a bit calculated, but as you say he had no reason to take out Park as he wasn't a threat in the standings and no-one lodged a protest.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/08/2016 09:39

emotions
No problem. I think Park and Viviani were wearing similar colours. I think it was poor riding by Cavendish but I put that down to lack of recent track experience.

101handbags · 16/08/2016 09:45

I agree with so many of these, what lovely memories. Last night's gold in the beam for Sanne Weavers was stunningly elegant and so unexpected too.

NotYoda · 16/08/2016 11:02

I agree about Cavendish. It was a mistake, not deliberate.

101

I also loved her routine. Very pretty

manicinsomniac · 16/08/2016 12:13

Late enough to not be a spoiler now - Thiago Braz da Silva in the Pole Vault.
I literally jumped up and danced around my living room at 3.45 in the morning! So brave to pass that height, beyond anything he'd jumped before already, to give himself a chance to get ahead. I love unexpected winners - especially British and Brazilian ones.

The little Brazilian gymnasts doing her floor routine to Beyonce.

Max-y Boy Whitlock.

The hug at the end of the tennis.

Andy Murray correcting John Inverdale about the Williams sisters' golds (a fabulous sportsman and a feminist too - love him).

The 41 year old gymnast.

the 13 year old swimmer.

The refugee swimmer.

Where UK are in the medal tables. It's great to think that when all us working class couch potatoes go and buy our lottery tickets and our pies, we're enabling all the public school kids to row all day and win glory for the UK. Just as it should be.

Hmm
Curlgurl · 16/08/2016 13:32

Nonno seriously? Hmm

NonnoMum · 16/08/2016 14:11

No. In jest.
