I feel very upset.

I found out this week that I'm graduating with a First, only just scraped one but its 70+ nethertheless.

I got really excited and posted it on my Facebook wall, and I've had really horrible comments such as "no one likes a show off", "getting a first won't make you better at your job", "I have got a 2:1, at least I had fun during my degree instead of spending my time with my nose in textbooks", "your employer won't care".

AIBU for just wanting a bit of recognition that I've done bloody well?!?!? My partner doesn't even know what it means, how do I explain it to him?

Feeling very woe is me. Sorry Confused

Congratulations, your friends sound like arseholes.

Wow. Lovely language. No one can "make" anyone call them Dr. Lol

Anyway, the only real doctors are medical ones.

FruitCider · 27/07/2016 19:07

It's BSc(Hons) mental health nursing.

I think some people have got funny because of the whole diploma/degree nurse thing.

My friends list is getting smaller as we speak.

Thank you for your encouragement X

Well done OP, that's a huge deal and yanbu!

KERALA1 · 27/07/2016 19:10

Utter rot about it not helping you get a better job. Nonsense. Anecdotally everyone I know with a first has an amazing job.

So it's ok to post inane everyday drivel on Fb but not to say when you have achieved the highest level a person who is not an academic can achieve in education? It's seriously properly impressive.

There is an anti intellectualism thing in this country that is depressing. Bet if your friends were German or Swedish you wouldn't get this tesponse

PatMullins · 27/07/2016 19:10

Ah there's always one...

MarklahMarklah · 27/07/2016 19:10

Rude! I graduated my BSc with a 2:1, then went back to do a masters, in which I got a distinction (equivalent to a first). Celebrated with family and those in the know congratulated me.
It takes a lot of hard work, and it should be recognised.

Just don't set your facebook account up to show your new qualification :)

thisisafakename · 27/07/2016 19:10

Mental Health Nursing sounds fascinating and if I were a patient, I would much much rather that my nurse was good at her subject than if she had been out 'having fun' while at uni. And I bet your employers (if you have a position lined up) will be very impressed because it surely tells them that you will be excellent at the job.

Nurses have not required degrees until recently. I wonder if a piece of paper has actually improved the quality of care?

DesertIslandPenguin · 27/07/2016 19:10

Congratulations! Getting a First is a massive achievement, and you should be very proud of yourself. They should be popping champagne corks for you not being snide.

MrsRyanGosling15 · 27/07/2016 19:11

Massive congratulations op!!! I know how you feel though. Me and my dh both graduated in the same year. I did nursing, got a 1st (72 but what do I care, it's a 1st!) My dh got a 1st with 98! The uni made a whole big deal of him as they had no recored of anyone getting a score like that in his field.special award sy graduation etc Everyone was amazed by him but when I pointed out that technically I got a 1st too, it was just brushed off as "sure your patients won't care what your mark was". Dh never made me feel like that thankfully. To him getting that mark came naturally as he is very very intelligent and into his area. I'm dyslexic and struggled so much. I did feel an element of sexism in some of the responses.

leccybill · 27/07/2016 19:11

Oh I wondered when someone might mention the Russell Group.

Who cares- a first from anywhere in any subject is an incredible achievement of which you should be mighty proud.
Well done! Star

My cousin just got a first in Nutrition. We are all rightly proud of her- there were no negative comments on her graduation photos on fbook, only deserved praise.

SquedgieBeckenheim · 27/07/2016 19:12

I think what you have achieved is amazing and certainly warrants celebrating, not downplaying! (Coming from a diploma qualified nurse, still working towards a degree 8 years post qualifying)

PatMullins · 27/07/2016 19:12

ailith are you one of the Facebook friends?

There's some sad and jealous people both on your FB and on here.
It's a fantastic achievement and you have every right to be proud.
As for your DP .......you can do better.

redgoat · 27/07/2016 19:12

Bloody well done. A First is amazing and you should rightly be able to be proud and share that.

You should tell your DP to do one and I'd be reevaluating those friendships to. You don't need negativity in your life. Star Smile Flowers Star

Enjoy some Wine to celebrate.

Oh jeez, talk about pissing on someone's chips. You're the one who demanded to know what university it was as well. Well whether or not care standards have improved (which is probably due to budget cuts more than anything), education is valuable for its own sake and OP has had the opportunity to specialise in an interesting discipline that gives her the chance to do further study or research in the future.

ailith · 27/07/2016 19:14

University is the most fun time of your life. I think very many students are able to both study and also have fun. You are supposed to come out at the end of the process as a more well-rounded individual - that is someone who has got the most possible out of the experience.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 27/07/2016 19:14

Bloody brilliant OP Flowers Grin

Really, honestly it's a huge deal. HUGE!!!!

Congratulations OP, phenomenal achievement! Star

If you were my friend I would be incredibly proud of you. I cannot imagine what nonsense must be running through the minds of your friends but I agree with others who say it might be time to find some new ones.
