I feel very upset.

I found out this week that I'm graduating with a First, only just scraped one but its 70+ nethertheless.

I got really excited and posted it on my Facebook wall, and I've had really horrible comments such as "no one likes a show off", "getting a first won't make you better at your job", "I have got a 2:1, at least I had fun during my degree instead of spending my time with my nose in textbooks", "your employer won't care".

AIBU for just wanting a bit of recognition that I've done bloody well?!?!? My partner doesn't even know what it means, how do I explain it to him?

Feeling very woe is me. Sorry Confused

A first is flippin brilliant, otherwise why would they call it a first? Massive congratulations to you.
Your 'friends' sound like a bunch of shitbags to verbalise their obvious insecurities in that way. Perhaps you need a fb cull now you have a bit more spare time on your hands. I

ImperialBlether · 27/07/2016 19:16

Asking whether it's a Russell Group university on a thread like this is similar to what the 'friends' are saying on FB. Trying to put the OP in her place. Shame on you.

Nice phraseology...

So which seat of learning was this? I would be interested to know.

FruitCider · 27/07/2016 19:17

Marklah definitely not! I have LinkedIn for that sort of thing.

Why do so many people swear here? Bleurgh

thisisafakename · 27/07/2016 19:18

Everybody who matters knows it matters...

Really? Not in vocational subjects like nursing actually. Most Russell Group institutions do not offer degrees in these subjects so it's a pointless argument. Also, the nursing degrees will be regulated by the governing body and therefore standards will be closely inspected and monitored so it doesn't matter where the OP's degree is from. Bet her employers won't give a shit where it's from and that's all that matters, not whether some random is impressed that it's from X institution rather than Y.

CurlyBlueberry · 27/07/2016 19:20

Well done. That's a massive achievement especially as you have to juggle practice placements alongside your university learning. You've done amazingly!

Personally I LOVE it when people post their good news on Facebook. Why the hell shouldn't they? I have people on my Facebook because I like them, therefore I actually want to hear their good news and share in their celebration.

PatMullins · 27/07/2016 19:20

Because you're an arsehole. HTH.

MrsRyanGosling15 · 27/07/2016 19:20

Ailith whilst more people manage to study and have fun, I think nursing students are in a different group. They are studying full time whilst working on the wards as well. Also alot of nursing students are older with families of their own. Not a lot of time for fun after a 13hr shitf then heading home to finish an essay. And I think that 'piece of paper' has improved nursing care. The nurses role has expanded so much in recent years that there is no choice but to expand the content of the courses. And contrary to popular belief, those 'degree nurses' spend 60% of their time in clinical practice from day one. ( In my uni anyway.)

LotsOfShoes · 27/07/2016 19:21

Congrats OP! Fantastic achievement! And for what it's worth, when my DH finished with a First a few years ago he also posted it on Facebook (he was super happy, spur of the moment, wanted to shout it out loud) and got nothing but positive replies. Those people are NOT your friends.

areyoubeingserviced · 27/07/2016 19:21

Op you have done fantastically well.
Do not allow anyone to make you feel uncomfortable about your achievements.
Unfortunately some people envy success.
Not everyone will be happy for you.

AskBasil · 27/07/2016 19:22

Jesus.

Unfriend the bastards, quick.

Fantastic achievement, well done.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 27/07/2016 19:22

A massive achievement, huge congrats. De-friend anyone who made a negative comment, you do not need them in your life x

Okay377 · 27/07/2016 19:22

cold 'They should've tried harder if they were bothered by their degree result'

That's unfair and unkind. Many people try and work hard and achieve a degree, a 2:2, a 2:1 or whatever it is. Those are all achievements and not to be dismissed. We all excel at different things.

The point here is that the OP has done exceptionally well and excelled in her degree and that is most definitely cause for celebration and recognition. A first is a massive achievement.

WoahSlowDown · 27/07/2016 19:23

WOW, there are some nasty Troll posters on here. It's pathetic. Are people really that sad and bitter that they gave to go around putting people in their place on the Internet.

LadyStoicIsBack · 27/07/2016 19:23

That is a HUGE achievement OP!!!! Congratulations you l'il Star!!!

FindoGask · 27/07/2016 19:23

Guess what degree class ailith didn't get at uni.

CurlyBlueberry · 27/07/2016 19:23

ailith I managed to both study AND have fun. I got a First AND had fun - I was given an award for contribution to College life. How do you know the OP has not had fun?! How do you know she has not become more rounded, just because she got a First?

BigChocFrenzy · 27/07/2016 19:23

Congratulations OP StarStarStarStarStar It's a FIRST !!

However, your DP and some so-called "friends" got a FAIL at being grownup

It seems a reflex in the UK, to try to drag down people who have really achieved something themselves, not just inherited it.

This is not common in other cultures or countries and we should try to change, to celebrate personal success.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 27/07/2016 19:24

Who shat on your fucking cornflakes ailith?

WaitrosePigeon · 27/07/2016 19:24

What horrible people!

Well done to you, you've obviously worked very hard and you should be acknowledged for that! Best of luck with whatever you're doing next Flowers

ailith · 27/07/2016 19:24

Why are university degrees dished out for vocational subjects, anyway? The system has been devalued, in my view.
But hey, many of you feel otherwise which is your prerogative.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 27/07/2016 19:27

ailith you're one of those people who puts "School of Hard Knocks" and "University of Life" on your Facebook profile, aren't you? Grin

Noregretsatall · 27/07/2016 19:27

Speaking as a university lecturer, since you're a mature returner who left school with no qualifications, let me tell you from the heart that I am incredibly proud of you, whoever you are, because that is a fantastic, remarkable and rare achievement. Be proud

^
This. Very well done OP! I just missed out on a first 3 years ago and know how hard it is in arts and humanities to achieve a First. Go celebrate!!SmileWine

RobinsAreTerritorialFuckers · 27/07/2016 19:28

Vocational subjects like law and medicine and architecture and engineering, ailith?

I'm fairly sure they don't 'dish out' degrees for any of those. Or for nursing, which has been mentioned.

Though, feel free to be rude about the nurse's qualifications next time you're really ill, hey?
