AIBU: clothes horse

So me and DP are currently rennovating our new house, and last night randomly had a conversation about the stuff that we currently have that we will not need and can donate to good will..
We currently live in a small one bed flat with no garden so have a clothes horse and a tumble dryer, (Dryer for the big bits like Jeans and bedding etc every thing else on the clothes horse)
In the new house there will be a garden with a clothes line and some where for the tumble dryer to go. So have said that the clothes horse can be donated as we wont need it. because if it cant go out on the line due to horrid weather we can use the dryer.
DP then said no we need all three?? this is a clothes horse that is tall and wide enough to hold 4 loads of washing, AIBU to say that we could get rid of it?? Hmm

caffeine I sometimes wonder if it's a conspiracy to make us use more electricity when spin dryers are unheard of by most people. Grin

It makes sense to remove excess water by spinning rather than heating the clothes and no domestic washing machine does 2800 rpm. It's even a bit sporny to see how much water comes out after a full speed spin in the washing machine!

OK, it's another job added to your washing routine but it's worth it in terms of shorter drying times and consequently faster turnaround of clothes.

P.S. You might think I'm so enthusiastic because I luuurve washing, when in fact it's the opposite. I loathe housework and anything that cuts down time or effort is a winner with me!

BorpBorpBorp · 01/08/2016 15:04

This talk of spin dryers has piqued my interest. Are they very big? Can they go on a countertop or do they have to go on the floor? Can you do jeans in them?

RebeccaWithTheGoodHair · 01/08/2016 15:17

God that spin drier! I want it, I'm going to order it.

So I could seriously just wash the clothes, transfer to spin drier to practically dry, and then just air them on a clothes horse? Could I get rid of the tumble drier?

The tumble drier is unfortunately new though as we had one of the blowing up ones and they offered us a new one for a good price so they didn't have to come and stop the other one killing us.

The airing cupboard was great for drying clothes in winter but we had to have a new boiler (it's all fun on the white goods stuff in this place) and it takes up loads more room so I don't have shelves to drape the damp washing from anymore.

Would the spin drier cut the drying time to such a degree that there would be no chance of the musty smell in winter?

As an aside I can't see why anyone would want to dry clothes over the Aga - Aga's stink and you would permanently smell of casserole.

Sgtmajormummy · 01/08/2016 15:48

I'd say mine (2800) cuts whatever subsequent drying method I use by half so mustiness is less likely.

Great for jeans, padded jackets, fleece/microfibre...

It needs to stay on the floor because if the load isn't balanced it rattles and "walks" with the centrifugal force. The clothes have to be packed down and held in place with a rubber mat. I wouldn't like to think about stray laces and stuff snagging in the motor. You also have to put a bowl under the spout to catch the water, which can be a lot if you're spinning dripping wet clothes.
It's about as big as a kitchen dustbin (68cm tall and 50? Diameter) and I keep mine in the utility room.

BillyNotQuiteNoMates · 01/08/2016 15:52

Lose the clothes horse - and donate it to me! I could use one that holds that amount of washing - to replace the three that I currently use!

Blackpoollassy · 01/08/2016 15:54

wow so glad there's others than me calling them maidens! thought i was a freak!

FOUR loads of washing?!

That's not just any clothes horse, that's a clothes CLYDESDALE

Grin This comment did not get the love it deserved.

liz70 · 01/08/2016 16:14

Well jel of anyone with a utility room.

When we have used our spindryer, we've put in the front doorway with the spout sort of "hooked" over the threshold iyswim, so the water pours out onto the ground outside.

Problem is that I find that I have to fill it in 2 loads from our 6 kg washing machine. So, if I were to not use the wm's spin facility, I'd be transferring two sopping loads from wm to sd at a time.

Since we don't use a tumble dryer, I'm not sure we would benefit from any savings. As I said earlier, it's chiefly for emeregencies.

facepalming · 01/08/2016 17:14

I admit I have not read the whole thread but is this seriously 8 pages about a clothes horse...occasionally diversifying into a chat about general clothes drying options?!!

I'm sure this is the mn equivalent to watching paint dry?!!

BorpBorpBorp · 01/08/2016 17:22

Thank you all re spin dryer, most interesting. I'm taking notes.

Mrbluethecatt · 01/08/2016 17:51

I have this one - it's amazing www.amazon.co.uk/One-Click-Luxus-clothes-Clothes/dp/B002VRGZ36

liz70 · 01/08/2016 17:55

Drying the nation's clothes is serious business, facepalming. takes another peg out of pocket in pinny

facepalming · 01/08/2016 18:07

I feel like this should be mn .. the 1950's edition...

and yet I'm still watching!!

liz70 · 01/08/2016 18:15

Right, that's all my whites getting a nice breeze. Now I'm just off to iron hubby's long johns and put that mutton joint in't oven before I take me curlers out. Shan't be long. Smile

Sgtmajormummy · 01/08/2016 18:55

Well, until the 1950s dream of a fully automated house comes true, or I can afford a housekeeper, I'm just trying to maximise results and minimise effort...

altiara · 01/08/2016 22:25

Read all 8 pages! Definitely not boring - clothes horse that fits 4 loads of washing =best thread for a long time! Not in the same league as making stuff in the sandwich toaster though.

I have all 3 and am thinking of getting a heated clothes horse as well. But now I want a 4 load clothes horse and a spinner thing as well. Grin

Yes to tumble drying jeans as well.

toadgirl · 02/08/2016 02:13

aw thanks enidbutton Grin

toadgirl · 07/08/2016 11:21

What? Neigh more posts?

pestov · 07/08/2016 11:30

Give your massive clothes horse away, but invest in a couple of smaller ones that you can pick up and move to the best spot - we chose not to put up a washing line as its so much easier to just pick up the whole horse when it rains and bring it inside. Plus they fold nice and small for when we need the space

EnidButton · 07/08/2016 12:33

its so much easier to just pick up the whole horse when it rains and bring it inside.

You really should invest in a stable. Horse carrying will play havoc with your back eventually.

(Sorry)

toadgirl · 07/08/2016 12:35

Love your sense of humour, Enid

toadgirl · 07/08/2016 12:36

It's true, you don't want your horse out in all withers

HarlettOScara · 07/08/2016 12:43

Clothes horse here too.

I have 2 clothes horses, a tumble drier and 4 outdoor washing lines (in car part so technically usable in all weathers.

I like to keep my drying options open.
