So me and DP are currently rennovating our new house, and last night randomly had a conversation about the stuff that we currently have that we will not need and can donate to good will..
We currently live in a small one bed flat with no garden so have a clothes horse and a tumble dryer, (Dryer for the big bits like Jeans and bedding etc every thing else on the clothes horse)
In the new house there will be a garden with a clothes line and some where for the tumble dryer to go. So have said that the clothes horse can be donated as we wont need it. because if it cant go out on the line due to horrid weather we can use the dryer.
DP then said no we need all three?? this is a clothes horse that is tall and wide enough to hold 4 loads of washing, AIBU to say that we could get rid of it?? Hmm

Yes, a clothes mammoth is the correct term I think, Pinky

ExcuseMyEyebrows · 27/07/2016 14:33

It's because women's jeans usually have Lycra or something stretchy in them, due to us girls liking to always show off our figures to the men, you see.

Ah, I see, this is the price I pay for my comfy, stretchy waisted jeans then Rubbish

I love this thread.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 27/07/2016 14:37

I'm wondering if it might be more sensible to pick up a smaller, cheap maiden from Asda after your move?

klmnop · 27/07/2016 14:37

Keep it unless you live somewhere sunnier than the UK , have infinite time on your hands to spend all day washing and drying or loads of money.

ResetPassword · 27/07/2016 14:43

I think I've found the 4 load maiden!! www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8500368.htm

This thread is very timely as I've been looking for a much needed new one Blush

Ladythraps · 27/07/2016 14:47

I call it a maiden!

I have two, plus a drier and a line outside. I use the maidens most of all. Always got things on them. I stand mine over the bath to save room and keep them out of sight.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 27/07/2016 14:51

Clothes horses are very useful if you wash something that can't be tumble dried, but it is too rainy to hang it up outside.

BluePitchFork · 27/07/2016 14:58

keep it.
esp if it folds flat for easy storage.

PuppyMonkey · 27/07/2016 14:59

Nah, Reset - that's the same size as my Lakeland heated airer and no way could you fit four loads on it. Unless you only put three socks and one jumper in per load or something.

DrWhy · 27/07/2016 15:00

I probably use ours more than the drier and the washing line put together. Practically nothing is supposed to go in the drier, I thought it would change my life but it shrinks everything so it pretty much just does sheets, towels and underwear. Then in Scotland it's either raining or there's a chance of rain while we are out during the day a huge amount of the time. So, clothes horse thingy it is!

Libitina · 27/07/2016 15:03

I have all three. My clothes horse is currently in the garden drying smalls, whilst the rest is on the line. In winter it comes in and I put lighter stuff on it to dry. Jeans and heavy stuff go in the dryer in winter.

I have a european style one. Holds loads but isn't huge and more importantly is cheap. Like this one

I can't believe I just read this whole thread - I need to find a new job....

NarcyCow · 27/07/2016 15:04

We have a big wooden 4-panel gatefold one that used to be MIL's. It takes two loads and wraps around our fireplace so I can get a load dried every night no matter how much it's raining. Because we live in Ireland, the bloody thing stands there every day of the year except Christmas Day when I get a day off from looking at it.

We're moving to a house with a utility room and space for a tumble dryer (finally!) and the clothes horse is being officially BANNED from the sitting room. There's no way I'll get rid of it though, it folds flat and can live in the utility room.

ootsideinbacktaefront · 27/07/2016 15:05

It's called a 'winter dyke'.Grin

ResetPassword · 27/07/2016 15:08

Ah well that's pissed on my optimism.
Do you rate the heated one PuppyMonkey?

Libitina · 27/07/2016 15:08

I thought clothes maidens were those dangle from the ceiling over your Victorian cooking range type of things?

BorpBorpBorp · 27/07/2016 15:10

I will meet you all above with the 3 items: dryer, outdoor clothesline and airer, and raise you a dehumidifier, which is used in conjunction with the airer to dry wet clothes in poor weather.

NarcyCow · 27/07/2016 15:11

That's a sheila's maid, apparently.

Sgtmajormummy · 27/07/2016 15:18

Keep the clothes horse, definitely.
My most recent bout of swearing was bringing in a line full of washing under the pouring rain.
At least with the tower airer you can just manhandle one thing back indoors. And take your time with putting on/taking off the washing.

I love these threads, too! Blush

NeedAnotherGlass · 27/07/2016 15:26

You definitely need a clothes airer!

But jeans in the drier? Are you actually mad ?
I ALWAYS put jeans in the tumble drier. They go all stiff and horrible on the airer.

wheresthel1ght · 27/07/2016 15:30

I have all 3 but I need that huge one in my life!

We have 3 kids between us so the washing never stops. The tumble dryer is a godsend - although a pricey one admittedly.

ExitPursuedByABear · 27/07/2016 15:38

Did I mention that I have an Aga as well?

Which is the supremist drying thingy in the land.

BorpBorpBorp · 27/07/2016 15:42

All hail lord Bear, high lord of clothes drying.

HoratioNightboy · 27/07/2016 15:44

Ooh, this is exciting! I have no garden or tumble drier, so rely on two biggish clothes horses and one little one which I have decided this very second to call a foal. It's fine for a few smalls etc.. And the radiator haging thingy which is next to useless.

Also have an eco-drier for when we need things dried in a hurry, but my mum has the ceiling thing - we just call it a pulley. She also used to have the other type of pulley which stuck out the back window and held four rows of washing, three floors up. You never see them any more. In fact I just googled and can't even find an image of one! Perhaps if I knew what they were called it might help. Grin

Chopstick17 · 27/07/2016 15:51

I'd say you need the clothes horse too. Dryers are v expensive to run and from November to March you can't really dry outside so you'd be using it all the time.
