To want my DH to go to A&E?

DH has had weird nervy pains in one side of his head for the last 3-4 days. Today, the pain was quite severe so he decided to go to the local walk-in centre this evening.

They saw him and advised him to go to A&E in our nearest city (around 15 miles from home). The triage report that the nurse gave him to give to A&E said "urgent" and mentioned red flags. It also said "seriously ill but stable".

DH does not drive and the nurse told him he shouldn't in any case. I can't take him to A&E because dd is in bed and we don't have anyone who could babysit tonight. DH would either have to take a taxi or ask a friend.

He doesn't want to go, "because it's late" and he says he'll go tomorrow. He probably doesn't want to put anyone out this late, and he would hate "wasting" money on a taxi. He is also telling me that the pain is better, but not sure if I believe him.

AIBU to think he should take a taxi and go tonight, as advised by the nurse? Or is it reasonable for him to decide that he feels well enough to wait until the morning? He tells me that he knows his own body and he is ok, but then, what were those "red flags" all about?

I can't force him to go, can I? Sad

Bengal, if your pupils have always been like that, and aren't accompanied by other symptoms, it's probably fine.

Draylon, you'd hope they would have been checked, wouldn't you? DH had several appointments (including an eye test), where his pupils were checked but no-one connected it to Horner's at all. It was only when things took a more worrying turn that he was eventually sent to a neurology department where it was picked up on.
So that was four GPs, an optician, 2 A&E junior Drs. All of whom told him he was fine.

Doinmummy · 13/07/2016 07:56

He could probably do with an MRI

Scarydinosaurs · 13/07/2016 08:05

I hope your DH is feeling better today.

Mysteries · 13/07/2016 17:26

Sounds like shingles.

BoudiccaAD60 · 13/07/2016 17:40

There's a lot to be said for knowing your own body. And it sounds like he trusts what he feels.Listen to him.

gaylemcfedries · 13/07/2016 17:40

Familyof3or4 · 13/07/2016 17:41

Draylon - GPs 9-5 YKWIM - no I really really don't. Worked on Monday and Tuesday, children asleep when left and when I got home. No they are not amazing 12 hour sleepers.
OP glad he was sent home after scans, hope all ok.

AlysonWorldTravelFamily · 13/07/2016 17:50

You should drive him! Getting the child out of bed isn't a big deal. Come on woman!

Maybebabybee · 13/07/2016 17:57

lifesalongsong · 13/07/2016 18:10

Sorry to over-dramatise.
My friend's DH had an infection in his throat. He didn't like doctors and refused to go. He died of septicemia in the ambulance after my friend called it when he passed out :-/
Get him to A&E however you can.

mumof3andteacher · 13/07/2016 18:33

If you read about this in a newspaper, you would think what idiots they are for not going to the dr!

Hulababy · 13/07/2016 19:06

I totally think you did the right thing by the way, just find that an odd thing to give someone and, then let them walk out the door!

Sadly it doesn't shock me, though it does concern me. A good friend had a seizure when driving his car. DH had to get on his hands and knees in the footwell to bring the car to a halt without any one getting hurt (either them in the car or other road/street users. Ambulance took him to hospital but A&E released him after a couple of hours or so and allowed him to drive home. It was only because he had so much nagging from those around him he even went back for more tests even.

Hulababy · 13/07/2016 19:10

Glad he went in the end and hope he gets some answers, and som pain relief, over the next few hours too.

CountessOfStrathearn · 13/07/2016 19:19

"Ambulance took him to hospital but A&E released him after a couple of hours or so and allowed him to drive home."

I really don't think you were given the full story there. Patients are not allowed to drive for a year after a first fit and will (everywhere I've worked) be referred to a First Fit clinic for a scan and an appointment with a neurologist.

The only alternative explanations I can think of is that he didn't stay to be properly assessed by a doctor or that it was diagnosed as a faint, but even then we would tell people not to drive until they had had follow-up like a 24 hour heart monitor.

oldmums · 13/07/2016 19:23

get your DD and take her with you to A&E .NOW, better safe that sorry and pack his bag for him to stay.

ExitPursuedByABear · 13/07/2016 19:26

Sounds very like trigeminal neuralgia. I've had a few episodes but not enough to diagnose it. It's horrendous!

MrsMac2014 · 13/07/2016 20:13

LOL NavyandWhite and ExitPursuedbyabear
Definitely stop the cheque

MrsMac2014 · 13/07/2016 20:19

Brokenbiscuit - hope he's feeling better now.
I understand what earlier poster says about some men not wanting to seek help.
My DP is self employed and would always say 'I'll go to A&E once I've finished this.' So frustrating but always better to get checked out though.

Purplehonesty · 13/07/2016 20:22

Hmm my dh is like this.

Waited all weekend to go to hospital just recently and nearly got sepsis as a result.

How is dh today?
