To want my DH to go to A&E?

DH has had weird nervy pains in one side of his head for the last 3-4 days. Today, the pain was quite severe so he decided to go to the local walk-in centre this evening.

They saw him and advised him to go to A&E in our nearest city (around 15 miles from home). The triage report that the nurse gave him to give to A&E said "urgent" and mentioned red flags. It also said "seriously ill but stable".

DH does not drive and the nurse told him he shouldn't in any case. I can't take him to A&E because dd is in bed and we don't have anyone who could babysit tonight. DH would either have to take a taxi or ask a friend.

He doesn't want to go, "because it's late" and he says he'll go tomorrow. He probably doesn't want to put anyone out this late, and he would hate "wasting" money on a taxi. He is also telling me that the pain is better, but not sure if I believe him.

AIBU to think he should take a taxi and go tonight, as advised by the nurse? Or is it reasonable for him to decide that he feels well enough to wait until the morning? He tells me that he knows his own body and he is ok, but then, what were those "red flags" all about?

I can't force him to go, can I? Sad

Rightly so.

I hope he is ok. Looking like he wasn't wasting his time.

milkbottle · 12/07/2016 17:26

Hope he is ok OP!

icklekid · 12/07/2016 17:36

user it is not the OP fault that her husband had a argument with her when she called thw taxi to take him. She has done nothing wrong and doesn't deserve you saying she is stupid etc.

My dad's GP declared him seriously ill. ill enough for the gP to make him lie down until I got there to pick him up. GP said I was to take him straight to a&e and gave me a letter to give to a&e. He didn't ring a&e up and tell them we were coming either.

So sometimes hcp do do things which afterwards you think are a bit odd.

My dad was so ill he was drawing up his will with a solicitor the next morning in hospital.

GreatFuckability · 12/07/2016 18:18

my GP sent us to hospital under our own steam with a child who could barely breathe (turned out to be an asthma attack, but we didn't know she was asthmatic at that point). so it happens!

incogKNEEto · 12/07/2016 18:36

Hope everything is ok.

Any news biscuit?

ShtoppenDerFloppen · 12/07/2016 22:43

Hoping that your silence is the product of preparing a serving of crow because DH was right and not because things at A&E are serious, OP.

Thinking of you...

DeathMetalMum · 12/07/2016 22:55

Hope everything is OK.

Thanks all for your concern and apologies for the late update. Have had a very busy day!

DH spent the night and much of the day at the hospital. They did a scan, and various other tests, and kept him under observation for a while, but they found nothing wrong. They have done blood tests too, but we don't have the results of those yet. Eventually they sent him home without a diagnosis. He hasn't been crowing though as he is still experiencing the pain - worse again this evening - and it's really frustrating to not know what is causing it. He has forgiven me for calling the taxi at least. Now he just wants to sleep as he got very little rest last night (me neither).

I have a number to ring in case his condition changes. It's all rather worrying tbh.

DD is much better today, thanks to those who asked.

Glad he's doing okay. What a busy day you've all had!

Would you like to describe the nervy pain he's been having? Some of us are experienced with facial/nerve pain which can often be missed or misdiagnosed.

Graceflorrick · 12/07/2016 23:16

I do hope things improve for your family soon OP Flowers

ShesAStar · 12/07/2016 23:19

You poor things, how worrying. At least you know that any of the main worries they had at the clinic haven't been found and they would have checked for all the obvious nasties. Really hope the pain subsides and you both get some rest Flowers

Brokenbiscuit · 12/07/2016 23:23

Pot, he isn't very good at articulating it at all, so I'm pretty in the dark about the pain. I do know it's at the front of his head on the left side. The pain comes and goes, sometimes worse than others. It is tender when he touches it, and sometimes hurts more when he opens his mouth or moves in a certain ways. Can't say much more.

Did the doctors mention anything about trigeminal neuralgia? If not, have a look at www.tna.org.uk/pages/condition.html and see if it sounds similar.

sofato5miles · 12/07/2016 23:30

I was about to say trigeminal neuralgia!

TheFear · 12/07/2016 23:31

yogurt exactly what I was going to say, I've had trigeminal neuralgia several times related to sinus infections and it's pretty awful. However I think if OP's Dh had this he wouldn't be home, he would be shouting for help with the pain in hospital - based on my experience. Nothing helps other than heat on the main pain areas and strong painkillers.

ConfuciousSayWhat · 12/07/2016 23:34

Sounds like trigeminal neuralgia also sounds like shingles also sounds like the start of a series of cluster headaches

None of which are particularly nice!

BastardGoDarkly · 12/07/2016 23:35

Jesus, that article says it's the worst pain known to the medical world! Confused
