If a general election is called would you vote Lib Dem to stay in the EU?

If there is a general election the Lib Dems have stated they will run on a platform to keep the UK in the EU if they win. The Tories obviously won't do that and the Labour party can't really run on that platform I don't think since so many Labour voters voted to leave. I'm curious if the Lib Dems would attract a lot of support since they would effectively be turning the general election into a second referendum.

Yes

sofasetteecouch · 29/06/2016 15:49

Yes
and I am going to join the lib dems. in fact the only party i have donated to ever has been the Lib Dems. but please lets bring Nick Clegg back and draw a line under the tuition fees and start talking about pupil premium

TempsPerdu · 29/06/2016 16:05

I don't get the tuition fees thing either. I realise it was a betrayal, particularly of their younger voters, but it's being treated by some as a huge, totemic thing that means the LDs are forever to be treated as political pariahs. The Tories and Labour, meanwhile, can lie, flip flop and U-turn practically on a daily basis and it's viewed as being par for the course. I think some pragmatism is called for here; the LDs were very much the junior partner in the coalition and were never going to get all their policies through. Arguably they should never have propped up a Tory government, but I genuinely think they were caught between a rock and a hard place and were aiming for stability (the most likely alternative to coalition being a minority Tory government and the prospect of another GE during an economic crisis). In the circumstances I think they made a pretty decent fist of reining in the Tories and forcing through some of their own ideas.

Definitely agree that Clegg was much better than Farron though. I'd vote for TF but I can't say he inspires me.

jellybeans · 29/06/2016 16:14

Possibly

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/06/2016 16:17

I'm very much over the tuition fees. ALL is forgiven.

Propertyquandry · 29/06/2016 16:24

I forgave the tuition fees once I read up more and realised he was completely backed into a corner and basically had no choice otherwise he would have not been able to get any other concessions on anything. He basically sacrificed students in order to help poor school age kids with the PP and the infant lunches. It was harsh but economic reality is harsh.

Yoyoyopo · 29/06/2016 16:25

Yes!

Samcro · 29/06/2016 16:27

i wouldn't vote for them

TrixieBernadette · 29/06/2016 16:27

At least when the tuition fees went up, they allowed student finance to fund part time students for the first time. That opened the doors to a lot of people who couldn't have otherwise studied.

Propertyquandry · 29/06/2016 16:28

I also quite like Stephen Kinnock. Before the ref last week, I heard him interviewed on BBC news and he articulated brilliantly the case for remain and totally debunked the leave campaign. DH and I both said, why on earth isn't he the one doing the campaigning rather than JC?

Propertyquandry · 29/06/2016 16:29

What we need is an SDP type new breakaway party for the modern era. Decent, progressive, compassionate whilst at the same time being economically literate.

TrixieBernadette · 29/06/2016 16:39

Just had an email saying 10,000 new members have joined the lib dems. One a minute.

EatsShitAndLeaves · 29/06/2016 16:44

Yes if the Labour Party can't get their shot together - which is looking increasingly likely.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 29/06/2016 16:45

No.

TempsPerdu · 29/06/2016 16:52

Agree Property. I keep reading that elections can no longer be won in the middle ground as everyone's so polarised now (and I guess the Curse of Blair doesn't help), but I'm sure I can't be alone in wanting a sane, moderate, pragmatic, slightly left-of-centre party to vote for!

Flashbangandgone · 29/06/2016 17:36

TempsPerdu

Not sure if I'd vote for them, but completely agree that about what you said about tuition fees.... Besides, Tim Farron apparently voted against the fees in opposition to the LD leadership of the time!

scarednoob · 29/06/2016 17:38

no.

much as I would love to undo the situation, it would be like voting for a bunch of headless chickens.

inexperienced headless chickens.

busyboysmum · 29/06/2016 17:44

Yes

speakergirl · 29/06/2016 17:44

Funny how so many are quick to turn to the Lib Dems but don't understand you are being told what you want to hear

Fourormore · 29/06/2016 17:46

All any politician does is say what you want to hear.

I'd go back to voting Lib Dem if this was in their manifesto yes, especially if Corbyn is ousted and Labour becomes Tory Lite.

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 29/06/2016 17:50

Hmm. After reading about Mystic Cleggs Amazing Predictions I would be very tempted. Also, the area I live is Tory/lib dem split so a vote for labour is sadly a wasted vote Sad Our lib dem candidate/team here works really hard for the area whereas as the Tory candidate seems ok but is rarely seen, so I think they could have a lot of support here.

LibDem/hard left Labour coalition anyone? Grin

TrixieBernadette · 29/06/2016 17:53

Speakergirl the lib dems haven't made any of this stuff up since Friday. Everything I've seen published has already been part of their campaigning etc (other than going back to the EU as they were hoping we wouldn't go in the first place)

Footle · 29/06/2016 17:56

Yes.

cannotlogin · 29/06/2016 18:00

Yes, but would likely vote for them anyway

fakenamefornow · 29/06/2016 18:00

Yes

I'd vote for any party who had remain as a campaign pledge, I wouldn't give a single shit about any of their other policies.

Are the Lib Dems promising this?
