If a general election is called would you vote Lib Dem to stay in the EU?

If there is a general election the Lib Dems have stated they will run on a platform to keep the UK in the EU if they win. The Tories obviously won't do that and the Labour party can't really run on that platform I don't think since so many Labour voters voted to leave. I'm curious if the Lib Dems would attract a lot of support since they would effectively be turning the general election into a second referendum.

No, not after last time.

MrHannahSnell · 29/06/2016 22:01

Yes.

Lynnm63 · 29/06/2016 22:23

No, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I don't think much of Tim Farron, I know he doesn't give a shiny shit about my opinion of him! Tuition fees are a biggie because that was a huge betrayal for political expediency. I liked Nick clegg but not sure I'd trust him. Plus my kids are at the age they'll be off to uni soon.

toconclude · 29/06/2016 22:36

I'd vote Lib Dem anyway, I always have. But the prospect of staying in the EU would make me even happier to do it.

BrexitentialCrisis · 29/06/2016 22:39

Yes

MajesticWhine · 29/06/2016 22:40

I usually vote libdem anyway. But yes I would.

JassyRadlett · 29/06/2016 22:43

Yes. This is a point of principle for them, they have long been the only unashamedly pro-EU party and say what you will about Farron, he absolutely the himself body and soul into the referendum campign.

alibongo5 · 29/06/2016 22:45

"A lot of people voted for them on their promise of free higher education."

Yep - I vowed never to vote for them again after Nick Clegg backed down on this and I don't intend to.

MrsFogi · 29/06/2016 22:46

Pretty much any party that has this as a manifesto pledge will get my vote at the next general election. And I've written to my MP to let him know that if he votes for (or abstains from the vote) giving article 50 notice neither he nor his party will ever get my vote again (even though I've voted for his party in every election be it council, general or mayoral since having the vote).

Propertyquandry · 29/06/2016 22:50

So if in theory they ran on a platform of not invoking article 50 and they won an outright majority. Nobody could complain that democracy wasn't being upheld. Smile

NashvilleQueen · 29/06/2016 22:52

Yes

StopLaughingDrRoss · 29/06/2016 23:10

Absolutely - I am a lifelong Lib Dem voter and a new member. I also quite like Tim Farron - he is passionate, articulate and is unashamedly pro EU.

I also don't think the tuition fee issue should stop them - as several PPs have stated, they did get pupil premium through which has made an enormous difference to children in my area and across the UK.

I do wish Nick Clegg could come back though...

Itinerary · 29/06/2016 23:21

Nobody could complain that democracy wasn't being upheld.

They could certainly complain that the Tories ducked out of delivering on the Brexit result, instead playing for time and calling an innocent little election so that another party could ignore the result and it wouldn't be the Tories' fault at all Hmm

ZenNudist · 29/06/2016 23:27

Yes I voted lib dem in 2010 and was bitterly disappointed they let the tories in. I've come round to that way of thinking. Thought they did well in coalition and gained a lot of credibility that they've actually been in power til fairly recently.

Liked Nick Clegg. Not sure about Farron.

Safe labour seat here so not sure it matters.

Think we need a pro- Europe coalition to defeat the Tories. Brexit is by no means a done deal.

peachpudding · 29/06/2016 23:28

Guess this is a lib dem poll. NO I wont vote for you. You betrayed us.

Flashbangandgone · 29/06/2016 23:36

Safe labour seat here so not sure it matters.

I'm not sure such a thing exists any more! Look at what happened in Scotland! The old order is broken.

sofasetteecouch · 29/06/2016 23:54

I just joined the Liberals.

MyNewBearTotoro · 30/06/2016 00:13

I voted Remain and I voted Lib Dem in the 2010 election, however I always said they would never have my vote again after they entered a coalition with the Tories and went back on their tuition fee promises.

So I would have to swallow some of my principles to vote for them again. I would prefer to vote for a Corbyn-led pro-EU Labour Party if possible.

seawardess · 30/06/2016 00:17

Yes and so would DH

winkywinkola · 30/06/2016 00:27

Yes.

BoatyMcBoat · 30/06/2016 01:04

How would they do that, then?

BungoWomble · 30/06/2016 01:22

They can't deliver.

Merkel has been quoted in the Independent as saying there is no way Britain can stay in the EU now. What possible way is there back from that? It would take statesmanship of the highest possible order, and given the vacuosity of British politics, playing London internal power games in complete carelessness of its effects on the rest of the country with no thought for the problems of post-industrialism, I can't see any of that materialising any time soon. Certainly not from the Lib Dems. Exactly where were they in the run up to the referendum?

Our best chance now is looking to our own internal divides and trying to bandage some of the wounds. So far no one seems capable of that either. I'm not seeing much hope right now, but it's important to remember its only been a few days.

Cjamm · 30/06/2016 01:23

I'd freaking hate it but heck YES!!

BungoWomble · 30/06/2016 01:26

BoatyMcBoat put it rather more succinctly!

WTAFisgoingon · 30/06/2016 01:42

I want toRemain and have voted for them in the past, but I actually think it would be undemocratic to try to remain now we have lost the referendum. So probably not?

For the first time ever I would probably not vote though, because I disagree so strongly with the conservatives.
