If a general election is called would you vote Lib Dem to stay in the EU?

If there is a general election the Lib Dems have stated they will run on a platform to keep the UK in the EU if they win. The Tories obviously won't do that and the Labour party can't really run on that platform I don't think since so many Labour voters voted to leave. I'm curious if the Lib Dems would attract a lot of support since they would effectively be turning the general election into a second referendum.

I would. I'm a conservative voter normally, but voted remain and seeing how the tortes have fucked this one up, and especially if that jingoistic tub-thumping pillock BoJo becomes leader, I really couldn't vote for them next time around

80sMum · 28/06/2016 22:40

I might, yes! Let's face it, what else is there apart from UKIP? The Conservative party is split down the middle and the Labour party barely exists any more. The Lib Dems are probably the best bet right now!

BitOutOfPractice · 28/06/2016 22:42

No

because I live in a very strongly Tory seat so what would be the point?
because I haven;t forgotten them selling their soul to the Tories to get into power
because after the tuition fees "pledge" I would never rust them again
because I'm a member of the Labour party

Hope that answers your questions OP Grin

80sMum · 28/06/2016 22:42

baking you just about summed it up!

PippaFawcett · 28/06/2016 22:44

Yes. And I think the Lib Dems and Labour should work together to block the Tories/UKIP so not putting candidates up against each other wherever possible which can split the vote.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/06/2016 22:44

the Labour party barely exists any more

I think the half a million members of the Labour party (compared to 130-150k of Tories) might disagree with that 80s

beetroot2 · 28/06/2016 22:49

No you don't 80sMum. That comment just made it more than obvious. This has been boiling up for many years. Something has finally happened. The lid has been blown off, never mind lifted. It was about time.

What this has shown is what twats were running our country and what egotistical maniacs are head of the EU.

LowAMH · 28/06/2016 22:49

Yes I would (but I like lib dems anyway)

TheElementsSong · 28/06/2016 22:49

Yes I would.

I always thought they did an excellent, unseen and unapplauded, job in coalition keeping down the worst of the Tories. They couldn't do everything, tuition fees being the notable failure that everyone remembers. For that, and for not going into coalition with Labour (this wouldn't have formed a working majority, but feelings of betrayal outweigh inconvenient facts), they got destroyed at the last election. We've seen what the Tories alone have done since 2015.

Looking back from the omnishambles of June 2016, I feel pangs of nostalgia for the days of the coalition.

FranHastings · 28/06/2016 22:50

Yes x2

lenibose · 28/06/2016 22:51

Yes. We were a marginal Tory-LD seat that went comfortably Tory last time. I am and have been a Labour voter. But not with Corbyn. He talks the good talk but otherwise he is a disaster. Why he didn't have the political gumption to say 'I resign as leader of the Labour Party and join the Leave campaign' I do not know. Actually I do know. Because despite all his fans he is a politician like the rest.
So I am off to vote Lib Dem next time.
And as an academic i can tell you that Brexit or no Brexit tuition fees are going up!

Farandole · 28/06/2016 22:51

No I wouldn't and I think it's a very bad idea. In countries that have the same parliamentary system as the UK (no proportional representation, two main parties) the emergence of a 'third party' only serves to ensure those in power remain in power. It's the 'divide and rule' concept.
The Tories have proved themselves to be total buffoons, incapable of governing, disconnected from the population, and more interested in their own power struggles than anything else. Much as I dread the idea, the only way to oust the Tories will be to vote labour. Voting lib dem will just dilute the vote against the Tories, and leave it wide open for Bojo to sink us ever deeper in this mess.

Besides, I agree with PP, have you learnt nothing from the last five days? You should never vote based on people's promises.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 28/06/2016 22:52

Yes i have been labour all my life but I think at heart I am a lib dem. They are pragmatic (which has damaged them) but that's what we need now. We need Danny Alexander back George osbourne certainly hasn't been effective since he left the treasury.

TwoLittleBlooms · 28/06/2016 22:56

Lib Dems would 100% get my vote if Tim Farron ran with keeping the UK in the EU. I am a Labour supporter (and I actually like Corbyn) and live in the North of England - but would happily switch my vote to keep us in the EU.

I think actually the Lib Dems would have quite a good following and immense support.

I am hoping for GE to be called early. I really feel even more depressed than I already am at the thought of Barmy Boris or Andrea Leadsom (I absolutely can not stand that woman) running the country. Theresa May would be OK - the lesser evil if no GE is called early - but even though she is a remain supporter I do have some misgivings about her.

Cantgetmyoldnameback · 28/06/2016 23:02

No, I will vote for my Labour MP who has said she will vote against leaving when the MPs have to vote on invoking Article 50.

scaryteacher · 28/06/2016 23:06

No way, as I voted to leave the EU.

Bragadocia · 28/06/2016 23:11

Yes. On the whole, I mostly align myself with the Lib Dems politically, but because of the Lab/Con constituencies I've lived in most of my adult life, I have so far only voted for them in the '97 GE (when in a Lib/Con seat). The referendum issue gives extra motivation to vote for them, although I do like my Labour MP.

RortyCrankle · 28/06/2016 23:13

No because a) the next GE won't be until 2020, b) I am a Conservative voter, c) I voted Leave and expect that to happen and d) they are insignificant - always have been and always will be.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 28/06/2016 23:23

Yes I would. I hope some remain, moderate members of other parties might join them too. Leave the extremes of Cons and Lab parties in the wilderness not running the bleeding show.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 28/06/2016 23:27

Yes

fusspot66 · 28/06/2016 23:30

No because they're opportunists and politically irrelevant.

mrsmuddlepies · 28/06/2016 23:30

Absolutely, yes. I have joined the party in the hope that they may offer a way out of this mess.

neolara · 28/06/2016 23:33

Yes, particularly if Corbyn remains in charge.

AbitSceptical · 28/06/2016 23:34

Yes.

I can't see myself voting conservative again unless something radical changes.

I can't see myself voting Labour again unless they pull themselves together and get a decent middle ground leader (and shadow cabinet).

I also thought the Lib Dems did well in the coalition and were harshly treated by the electorate at the last election.

Like a previous poster said, lets get some sensible people running the show and marginalise the extremes of left and right as soon as possible.

bakeoffcake · 28/06/2016 23:35

Yes I would.

I very much miss Nick Clegg. He shouldn't have gone along with the Fee rise but it's not as if the others all fulfil their promises.

It's such a shame he wasn't vocal during the Referendum campaign. The lib dems didn't get a look in during debates etc.
