Not to change the spare bed sheets for a new guest

Would never dream of doing this normally. Very clean MIL coming for 1 night. The week after DP's friend is staying for 1 night, by the time he gets to bed he'll be pretty drunk if usual behaviour is repeated. It fills me with horror not to have a spotless bed/bedroom for guests but really not sure I can be bothered this time. WIBU not to change them as a one off?

I think they should think them selves lucky, last time I stayed with family I got quilt with no cover, stained pillow with no cover and that was it

Penfold007 · 02/07/2016 20:28

OrangeDaisy its quite simple; would you feel okay sleeping in sheets someone else had slept in? If yes don't bother changing the sheets, if no they you know what to do.

thenightsky · 02/07/2016 20:31

For a drunken bloke I'd change the pillow slip and bottom sheet and turn the duvet over.

FindoGask · 02/07/2016 20:32

I am a total slattern by most standards and even I would change the sheets.

LilacInn · 02/07/2016 20:40

Unbelievably rank even to have the notion.

It makes no difference if the DP's friend will notice the cleanliness of the sheets, or not. I keep to certain standards for my own benefit, regardless of whether others "notice."

Ugh.

Happyhippy45 · 02/07/2016 20:42

My very particular mum comes down to stay for a couple of nights fairly regularly. She gets up the morning she is leaving, strips the bed, sticks it in the machine and then tumble drys it. If she has time, she makes the bed again. I've told her not to bother as she'll most likely be the next person to sleep in the bed. I told her if we have someone else staying before her I'd change the sheets for them. Though I probably wouldn't. I'd just make sure they smelt fresh.
I ALWAYS change the sheets if a couple have been staying over. Even if it's my MIL and her partner in their 80's.

PigletJohn · 02/07/2016 21:01

Here are my pants. I've worn them all day. You can wear them tomorrow.

Yes?

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 02/07/2016 21:06

Wow some people have truly massive hang ups about sheets.

Unless MIL shits or pisses the bed, who the fuck cares? No one will know and I doubt DHs mate will give a shit.

Some of you need to chill out.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 02/07/2016 21:08

PigletJohn - so you either change your sheets everyday or don't change your skivvies everyday?

Floggingmolly · 02/07/2016 21:10

Sleeping in your own sheets for a couple of days is not comparable to sleeping in someone else's

Dontlaugh · 02/07/2016 21:17

Change the sheets. That is all.

august1982 · 02/07/2016 21:20

Seriously ladies, how dirty do you think the MIL is going to be?????!

I would say check the bed, make sure there is nothing wrong with it and then decide. We are all human and this guy isn't coming for a romantic weekend with his gf - he's after a bed to sleep in!

Use your judgement and go with your gut. Change it or don't, he probably won't notice - it will only be your conscience that matters x

Floggingmolly · 02/07/2016 21:22

It's not actual dirt (hopefully), it's sweat. People sweat more when they sleep, they just do.

Rhumatoidwarrior88 · 02/07/2016 21:33

Do whatever makes life easier for you. Always.

millimat · 02/07/2016 21:35

Omg they're SHEETS!!! Some people must have a lot of time on their hands!

iminshock · 02/07/2016 21:39

Great thread!

No way would I change the sheets. But in the interests of mumsnet research I will change the sheets on my bed and time it .....

SabineUndine · 02/07/2016 21:41

I'm with you Benny. I hate changing sheets but it's a five-minute job. Also I once stayed with a friend who proudly told me only two other people (a couple) had slept in the sheets I was sleeping in and I couldn't believe she thought that was a recommendation!

evelynj · 02/07/2016 21:50

If you know he wouldn't care why bother. 5 minutes to change a bed? Bollocks. The drying & sorting I cba with, have started taking our superking bedding to the dry cleaners to be washed & ironed, love. It delivered back all neatly pressed

nannybeach · 02/07/2016 21:50

pretty hard to change sheet in my spare room, bed is on 3 walls, have to climb on it, depends who it is, daughter and grandchild, wouldnt change them every time, because you probably keep your sheets on your bed a week, thats what I do, said in the paper the other week, Ms (Mr,Mrs) average changes the sheets once a month. so would change the sheet after a few uses, turn the duvet over. Funnily, enough next week, son is coming for a couple of days then grands kids are having the bed, he is house sitting wouldnt dread of expecting him to change the whole bed.

0hCrepe · 02/07/2016 21:58

MIL does the sheet under duvet thing. Dh and I weren't sure if we were meant to sleep on or under it and it ended up a scrumpled mess anyway, creating even more washing. I wouldn't recommend that!

NothingIsOK · 02/07/2016 22:00

Sweat on the sheets, dribble on the pillow cover. Yuck. I would hate to have someone else sleep in a bed with the same bedding I had used.

I'm finding peri menopausal sweating positively drenches the bed. Not so much airing the sheets these days as letting them to air dry. I've always been a terrible night time dribbler though, so can't blame that on th hormones. And yes, I do have to wash the cushion covers from the sofa where I have daytime naps!

Gallievans · 02/07/2016 22:25

I always change the bed linen after guests (well and I know I'll get flamed for this) apart from the fold-out in DD"s room - but that's because its usually her best friend that uses it so that gets done about once a month or if someone e else needs to use it, whichever is soonest. That said, if your MIL is only there one night I too would just give it an air & tidy up, then change after second guest. It's pissing it down so much here that even if I used the eco-cycle on the machine it'd still have to go in the bloody drier, even if it was going into the cupboard rather than back on the bed

Would you want to sleep in sheets that someone else had previously been in, if no, then change them!
