Not to change the spare bed sheets for a new guest

Would never dream of doing this normally. Very clean MIL coming for 1 night. The week after DP's friend is staying for 1 night, by the time he gets to bed he'll be pretty drunk if usual behaviour is repeated. It fills me with horror not to have a spotless bed/bedroom for guests but really not sure I can be bothered this time. WIBU not to change them as a one off?

They have to be changed. Just to keep the status quo - because if you don't change them, then someone else won't change them in their house, then someone else will think "sod it" and eventually I'll stay at someone's house where they haven't changed the sheets and then I'll have to find a Travelodge at short notice and it will all be hideously awkward.

Orangedaisy · 27/06/2016 21:20

I love that so many people are interested in this Smile.

Decision made-DP decides, and if he thinks they get changed, MIL will be asked to strip bed. It definitely takes more than 5 minutes. I shall wash my hands of any guilt left linked to his decision.

Would it make any difference to opinion if I admit she's actually a step-MIL Grin...?

Unwashed towels!!!! That's really beyond the pale.

Cubtrouble · 27/06/2016 21:21

That is rank

Flumpnugget · 27/06/2016 21:24

Flip the bottom pillow onto the top, give the duvet a shake, and leave it at that! He'll not give 2 hoots and it will still be fresh after MIL was in it for only 8 ish hours!

Haggisfish · 27/06/2016 21:26

Ah hahaha!!! She will have barely wiped her very clean hands and face in the towel. Showering towels are different.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 27/06/2016 21:36

I might change the sheet and pillowcase, but probably not --fro drunken boytype visitor.

I've a sliding scale here.
Cat A :everything stripped, bed aired, room aired, remade, plumped and floofed. (Pets exclusion Zone for the duration)

Cat B : sheets/pillowcases washed, bed aired, same duvet cove/overthrow (throws may be replaced if the cat has fluffed them up good)

Cat C: remake bed smartly, air room if possible. Apologise for cat fluff.

It's A for Mothers/MILs/Lovelyfriends
It's B for children visitors (all studenty types)
It's C if you are unexpected or likely to be drunk on arrival and late to get up the next day. (drunk emergency studenty types)

Janeymoo50 · 27/06/2016 21:39

Just change it, it's summer.

Katemiddletonsothermum · 27/06/2016 21:40

If she's clean & sleeps in PJs then no worries. Just straighten & tighten & the bed will be fine.

However, my own MIL stayed last night and this morning I found toast crumbs in the bed.

The dirty bitch had walked straight past our kitchen table & gone back to bed with the toast. I NEVER allow my kids to eat in any other room apart from our kitchen/diner.

At least, I hope it was toast crumbs and not bits of biscuit from her knickers...

Hereforthebeer · 27/06/2016 21:44

Change the pillow case, if he's drunk he won't even notice that... or as other posters have said - ask DP and get DP to do it...

BoGrainger · 27/06/2016 21:56

Minging? I really don't understand the angst. Do people get ill or worse, die, if they sleep in bedclothes that another person has slept in? Unless the previous occupant is known for wetting the bed or dribbling uncontrollably into the pillow I can't see the point.

Floggingmolly · 27/06/2016 22:07

Why would it make any difference that she's a step MIL? i presume she'll be getting the clean sheets, it's guest no. 2 who'll be hot bedding it.

Floggingmolly · 27/06/2016 22:08

Why would her being a step MIL make any difference?? It's guest no. 2 who'll be hot bedding it, not her.

Xmasbaby11 · 27/06/2016 22:13

I think it's a bit grim. I might have done it when I was a student, but not now. You've got a week in between … it's seriously lazy not to wash the bedding!

Orangedaisy · 27/06/2016 22:15

Was joking about step-MIL...

Thanks all, bedtime now. No comment on when I last washed my own sheets Grin

justmyview · 27/06/2016 22:17

It's probably 5 minutes to strip a double, including pillows, duvet cover, and paraphernalia. 10 mins to remake including new duvet cover. 5 mins to load washing machine, and turn on. 15 mins to hang washing out to dry. 5 mins to fold and put away. So, about 40 mins, unless I'm really slow

How could stripping a bed and washing sheets possibly take so long???!!!!!!

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 27/06/2016 22:18

Normally I'd say yabu to expect a guest to sleep in a used bed. But, on this occasion I don't think I'd bother! Friend sounds like he'd be too drunk to notice Blush

SanityClause · 27/06/2016 22:19

I would feel embarrassed to ask a guest to strip the bed clothes.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 27/06/2016 22:23

If your DH wants him to have clean bedding, your DH can clean the bedding.

Hardtodeal · 27/06/2016 22:24

Wouldn't change for a drunken guest, no.

OutsiderInTheGarden · 27/06/2016 22:25

Wow, not sure toast crumbs in the bed warrant being called a "dirty bitch". Confused

OP I don't think this would be the worst thing in the world, but personally I would change the bed. And it sounds to me like this might actually play on your mind and bother you anyway, so it's probably less hassle to just change the bedding and then you don't need to think about it.

Love Tondelaya's sliding scale of bed cleanliness, also enjoying the word "floofed". Smile

acasualobserver · 27/06/2016 22:32

Family can go in once-used family bedding (with clean pillow slips). That's my rule. I know it makes absolutely no sense.

AnnaMarlowe · 27/06/2016 22:34

I'm hoping, even more than usual, that I don't actually know any of you in RL. (though I'm sure you're all lovely).

I'm staying with two different friends over the next two weeks. They seem like the kind of people who would put clean bed linen on but this thread is giving me definite cause for concern...

user1467007852 · 27/06/2016 22:35

Nothing nicer than getting into a bed that's been freshly washed and smells amazing

SaucyJack · 27/06/2016 22:38

Just Febreeze it the day before guest number 2 comes.
