I am an avid member of the remain camp and was sad about today's result.
My Father voted to leave, and he laid out a convincing and relatively understandable argument that I agree with in the extreme, but at least respect.
You don't want your son to be in an EU army? That was why you voted? Economics and immigration were less important? How can economics be less important than the non existent sci fi EU army you have just invented?
How are you going to even explain that to your son when he lives through the next massive recession?
I don't think us remainers are so upset because we lost - we are so upset because we deeply believe that it was best for our country and generations to come to remain in the EU - and when we find out that 52% of our countrymen (or 52% of those who voted) didn't agree that is one thing but when they list their reasons....
^I wanted a change
I felt the remain camp were smug
I didn;t for a minute think we would win
I don't want immigrant drugs dealing on my street corner
I want us to take Britain back
I don't want my son in the EU army^
Then that stuff is genuinely painful to cope with.
I am pretty educated. I am also not very knowledgeable about economics, politics or the world stage. I have no method of understanding the long term impact of this in real terms - and neither does 99% of the population - so it was a hard choice for us to make.
From what I have read from various sources, I could not see a single reason why leaving the EU was better for us in practical terms and I could see lots of problems associated with leaving.
That said, i accept the limits of my own knowledge, but I am reminded that the bank of england, the IMF, The institute for fiscal studies, the President of the USA, the leaders of both labour and conservative parties, every PM this country has ever had, the confederation of british industry, the leaders of every other state in the EU, all the former treasury secretaries, the prime ministers and leaders or almost all the countries around the world, virtually all reputable economists, the leader of the lib dems, green party, most of our unions, the head of the NHS, all our churches, environmental lobbies, most of the heads of the biggest companies in the word, greenpeace, the world trade organisation etc. etc. were ALL in the remain camp and I would like to think their collective wisdom and research means something.
In the leavers camp I see Donald Trump, Nigel Farage, head of the BNP, and Keith Chegwin - and for me that says it all.
In any case - please accept we are angry and upset because we feel this referendum was a political trick - not an opportunity for change and I fear none of us were as well informed as we should have been.
That said, we stand together as a country and I greatly hope we ride the storms to come to a brighter future.
