I voted Leave but don't deserve abuse for it !!!!

Yesterday I voted to leave after months of thought about all the main issues regarding membership.

I decided to leave based on sovereignty, I don't want a closer EU/United States Of Europe. I don't want my son to be in an EU army.

Immigration and economics for me were lesser issues. But still influenced my vote.

The names on here and Twitter that have been directed at leave voters has astonished me.

I am not uneducated, racist or xenophobic. I simply want the best for my country and that IMO is leave and I am overjoyed with the victory today against all odds.

Maybe if those on the remain side looked more into the arguments instead of name calling it would have been a different result.

It shocks me that labour supporters on Twitter are saying these horrible names against leave voters, but they need us to get their seats in the north, I don't think it is a good idea to insult your own base.

Even on mumsnet rhetoric has been appalling, I have had posters say they can't bring themselves to speak to leave voting parents.

Why can't you just accept maybe that leave possibly has a better campaign/arguments.

This idea that many leave voters regret the vote is wrong, everyone I know who voted leave is in a joyous mode today.

Can we just move on now and accept the result instead of insulting 52% of the population.

I voted Remain and am absolutely gutted that the country has voted to leave. Today I have felt a mixture of sadness, anxiety and ultimately, a growing anger. I am really angry at the Leave voters. I am usually a very open minded sort of person, let people have their views etc. But I just feel overwhelmingly that the reasons people have given to leave like the OP's bollocks about her son going into 'an EU army' or whatever are so misconstrued, uneducated and stupid that it makes me so angry that we are all being dragged into this new situation because of people who have these stupid rose tinted views about 'what England used to be like' etc. Leaving is going to have major implications for us and our children/grandchildren in terms of the economy, NHS and the ability to travel/live/work around Europe.

The OP says that Leavers shouldn't have abuse thrown at them, but tbh I am so appalled and angry that this has happened why should they not be held account for their decision which effects everyone in this country.

I have a very good friend who voted Leave. We chatted about the vote before yesterday and she gave her reasons (which were disappointingly dire) and subsequently can't help but look at her in a different light. Like I have less respect for her know. That may sound judgmental but that is how strongly I feel right now. I am so disappointed and annoyed.

I think that it was totally irresponsible of David Cameron and the british government to put this referendum to the British public. Most people are pretty clueless when it comes to politics, particularly Europe, and to give such an important voice to people who do not have sufficient knowledge/education about the subject was always going to be dangerous and stupid.

So it turns out I do have one Out voter on my Facebook.

She's the one who left school early, got involved with gangs, and posts so much ignorant, ill-informed twaddle on Facebook that I've hidden her posts completely in the past.

She's also complaining about being called racist but when asked what her other reasons for voting Out were she's gone silent.

What am I supposed to make of that? My anecdotal data and the statistical data show that it's the under-educated who voted out.

I reckon it's fair enough to say that Remain was the smart choice. The data shows the smart people voted to stay, by and large.

Of course not all people who voted leave are under-educated xenophobes, but there certainly were a lot of them in the Leave camp, I don't think it's sour grapes to mention this - it's simply stating facts. (See image)

I voted Leave but don't deserve abuse for it !!!!
yummymummycleo · 24/06/2016 23:04

Op- please explain why you think you have made Britain better? I just don't understand how leaving the EU will make a better future for your children. How?

I don't understand why you don't want to be part of Europe? We now have no allies.

velocitykate · 24/06/2016 23:06

But what part of Brexit means that said immigrants will not be here anymore??

Immigrants helped build this country, we would be nothing without them- but who has actually said we will be without them? This decision does not mean we are closing our borders nor are we 'kicking people out' hmm

Erm, how about those immigrants themselves? Why is it OK for them to help build our country but for us to then stick two fingers up at them today and say "Oh it won't matter, the ones who are already here will stay"? Why the hell should they stay?

Immigrants to this country, whether from the EU or elsewhere have never felt so unwelcome in this country as they have today.

I work with someone who is German. this person has two children and a british spouse. When it was suggested today that this person get dual nationality today and a British passport to avoid being sent back to Germany, they said "Never!" and are now trying to secure German passports for the children

NoMudNoLotus · 24/06/2016 23:06

And I agree that if remainers had really researched the facts then their vote might be different.

How can anybody support the TTIP agreement?

speakergirl · 24/06/2016 23:07

Oh come off it. Tell me which country is actually going to mount an assault on the UK?

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 24/06/2016 23:07

God, I'm so glad we are out. Only wish the sore losers could go too

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 24/06/2016 23:08

Such drama llamas! Scared for our children's future..... How fucking ridiculous and over dramatic you sound

Get. A. Grip.

TheElementsSong · 24/06/2016 23:09

i Only wish the sore losers could go too

Do you really mean that?

speakergirl · 24/06/2016 23:09

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp

I demand cheese and wine get added to the smiley list

IHaveHadHOWManyUsernames · 24/06/2016 23:09

Can we just move on now and accept the result

OP this sounds so flippant. Kind of shows that you didn't really put much thought/research into your decision if you think that people are not going to want to discuss this further.

velocitykate · 24/06/2016 23:11

Also bear in mind that even more junior doctors are now planning to go overseas than were following Hunt's contract imposition.

If the Tory's hadn't completely succeeded in destroying the NHS, Brexit certainly has

HunterHearstHelmsley · 24/06/2016 23:11

Ignore them, OP. They've said they don't give a shit about your feelings so don't give a shit about their opinions..

I've come to the realisation that the majority of remain voters I know are clearly unhinged.

blinkowl · 24/06/2016 23:12

"How can anybody support the TTIP agreement?"

America are pushing for TTIP.

They will seek to strike a similar deal with us outside of the EU. America as you may or may not have noticed if you live with your head in a bin is aggressive in its foreign policy.

We have a right wing government lurching further to the right. They will sell everything we have off as soon as they can.

At least in the EU we had a say what happened there, TTIP is far from a forgone conclusion. We are stronger negotiating in a group than on our own.

ghostyslovesheep · 24/06/2016 23:13

we need a trade agreement with the US even more if we leave so you think TTIP is going to not impact on us?

Within the EU there have been referendums on that very issue - which will influence the outcome - but without the EU we are rather over a barrel and begging for trade

blinkowl · 24/06/2016 23:13

"Scared for our children's future..... How fucking ridiculous and over dramatic you sound"

Just because you obviously don't understand the potential ramifications of today's result doesn't mean others are wrong for fearing for their DC's future.

nuttymango · 24/06/2016 23:13

OP you should have thought of that before you voted. Put up with it.

IonaMumsnet · 24/06/2016 23:14

Evening folks. Thanks for your reports on our little visitor up there ^^. We've shown her to the door now. As you all were.

Salmotrutta · 24/06/2016 23:14

Exactly why are you glad we're out MumonTheRun?

You hated the employment rights that the EU brought? Working time directives? Maternity leave?
Or was it the EU funding for farmers etc.?

What specific aspects of the EU membership did you not like?

Permanentlyexhausted · 24/06/2016 23:14

Nomud I'd argue the same about Brexiteers fully researching the facts. We may well look back on today and wish we'd gone for the EU version of TTIP:

ghostyslovesheep · 24/06/2016 23:16

Thanks Iona x

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/06/2016 23:16

You got what you wanted, why on earth aren't you enjoying it?

Boohoo

CherryPicking · 24/06/2016 23:17

You don't want your son to be in an EU army? Why, because he might die from something ghastly like a bullet, rather than good old fashioned kitten licking, like the British soldiers in WW2 died from?!

janieblaye · 24/06/2016 23:18

I am an avid member of the remain camp and was sad about today's result.

My Father voted to leave, and he laid out a convincing and relatively understandable argument that I agree with in the extreme, but at least respect.

You don't want your son to be in an EU army? That was why you voted? Economics and immigration were less important? How can economics be less important than the non existent sci fi EU army you have just invented?

How are you going to even explain that to your son when he lives through the next massive recession?

I don't think us remainers are so upset because we lost - we are so upset because we deeply believe that it was best for our country and generations to come to remain in the EU - and when we find out that 52% of our countrymen (or 52% of those who voted) didn't agree that is one thing but when they list their reasons....

^I wanted a change
I felt the remain camp were smug
I didn;t for a minute think we would win
I don't want immigrant drugs dealing on my street corner
I want us to take Britain back
I don't want my son in the EU army^

Then that stuff is genuinely painful to cope with.

I am pretty educated. I am also not very knowledgeable about economics, politics or the world stage. I have no method of understanding the long term impact of this in real terms - and neither does 99% of the population - so it was a hard choice for us to make.

From what I have read from various sources, I could not see a single reason why leaving the EU was better for us in practical terms and I could see lots of problems associated with leaving.

That said, i accept the limits of my own knowledge, but I am reminded that the bank of england, the IMF, The institute for fiscal studies, the President of the USA, the leaders of both labour and conservative parties, every PM this country has ever had, the confederation of british industry, the leaders of every other state in the EU, all the former treasury secretaries, the prime ministers and leaders or almost all the countries around the world, virtually all reputable economists, the leader of the lib dems, green party, most of our unions, the head of the NHS, all our churches, environmental lobbies, most of the heads of the biggest companies in the word, greenpeace, the world trade organisation etc. etc. were ALL in the remain camp and I would like to think their collective wisdom and research means something.

In the leavers camp I see Donald Trump, Nigel Farage, head of the BNP, and Keith Chegwin - and for me that says it all.

In any case - please accept we are angry and upset because we feel this referendum was a political trick - not an opportunity for change and I fear none of us were as well informed as we should have been.

That said, we stand together as a country and I greatly hope we ride the storms to come to a brighter future.

IHaveHadHOWManyUsernames · 24/06/2016 23:19

Leaver supporters saying that Remainers are 'unhinged' and 'drama llamas' and that we should 'get a grip' and being concerned for our children's futures etc just goes to show in my view that they have no concept of the enormity of what has happened. Utter morons.
