To find this persons assistance a little sexist?

This may seem a little confusing, but I'm a crossdresser and am perfectly happy doing the day to day things that people do, whether wearing male or female clothes. This morning though, I went into my local B&Q to buy some paint brushes, masking tape etc for a decorating project that we're about to start. I was comparing paint brushes, when a male assistant approached me saying something like "Are you ok there love? Do you know what you're looking for" I was slightly taken aback, not because I think that he assumed I was a woman, but more about the way he asked his questions. Are women not supposed to know anything about paint brushes, or is it me?

Do people really call you Madam?

I'd be insulted with that. And I would walk out the shop.

Floggingmolly · 17/06/2016 16:43

Have you fully transitioned to female, Ego? Don't answer if you don't want to, it's a bit personal, I suppose.

Oh and I hate being called Miss in school as well. But I need the salary.

WorraLiberty · 17/06/2016 16:44

Exactly Floggingmolly

You've summed up in a couple of lines what I was trying to say but failing Blush

This is why I'm not sure how sexism can come into this really, particularly with the OP's second example, involving the guy who jump started his car.

The first example (as a PP said) is possible, because perhaps the OP had his back to the assistant, or maybe the assistant had poor eye sight, but the second example is baffling.

Oh right! All the best, sorry to be nosy.

Floggingmolly · 17/06/2016 16:46

To Ego

WorraLiberty · 17/06/2016 16:47

user, no-one (not even the OP) is pretending he is a woman.

He simply likes to wear women's clothing sometimes.

MariaSklodowska · 17/06/2016 16:48

user why did you come on this thread?

to be rude and inflammatory like you are to the people at work?

Why would you even need to say 'man' or 'woman' during your work?

Whatever your opinion is, just keep it to yourself in certain situations.

it's not that hard is it?

RiverTam · 17/06/2016 16:52

I've reported user I'm getting to the point of almost automatically reporting all of the userlingnumber poster.

MrsJayy · 17/06/2016 16:53

Wow tone has changed from paintbrushes to womens loos Shock

MariaSklodowska · 17/06/2016 16:54

" i get asked a lot if Im ok in shops "

yes me too MrsJayy, they keep coming up and saying 'are you all right there' with (I think) a bit of a tilted head thing going on....

rachelmonday1 · 17/06/2016 16:56

Floggingmolly - I never claimed to be " indistinguishable from whatever he's portraying himself as today" in terms of my dress. What I said was "I'll never really look like a woman, but I look enough like one to not encounter difficulties when wearing clothing that feels comfortable for me at the time."

Tbf i dither when im looking for things so probably a bit of head tilting goes on

m0therofdragons · 17/06/2016 16:58

Dh standing in b&q dressed as a man would get a similar question but with mate instead of love. Sounds like a helpful member of staff being friendly. Mind you, I'm in the west country and regularly get called "my lover ".

rachelmonday1 · 17/06/2016 16:58

MrsJayy: it's all slightly off topic too, in terms of my original question!! :)
