To think homophobia will get worse in the Western Europe and not enough is being done to combat this prejudice

I know homophobia is already pretty common but I think it will get worse the more immigrants from cultures that are intolerant of homosexuality and homosexuals come to Western Europe. I hope gay people will remain safe here in the UK and able to lives their lives without fearing being "out".

I cannot see how you can accept Islamic attacks on LGBT community. The west needs to say to grow up your religion is archaic and disgusting on the hate and killing of gay people they condone.

I know you might feel kinda OK on Islam as Transsexual is OK in Islam but you understand Islam want's your gay Allies murdered and thrown for the tallest buildings and the LGBT community needs to stand together and say we won't be back down no matter how many of us your kill.

To me the biggest threat to the LGBT community today is Islam. People need to realize it, I honestly thought when ISIS murdered 50 people for being LGBT that people would realize Islam just isn't going to work.

The left need to realize you can't be pro LGBT and pro Islam. LGBT acceptance was a hard won way forward, Islam is a step back to a patriarchal society when women and LGBT people are worthless.

"I cannot see how you can accept Islamic attacks on LGBT community. The west needs to say to grow up your religion is archaic and disgusting on the hate and killing of gay people they condone."

The problem is that on this point Islam is no more archaic and disgusting than Christianity- and absolutely not indicative of how individual Christians or Muslims think or behave. Have you read the Bible lately?

One difference is that when a right-wing Christian goes berserk with a gun in the name of his religion (as does happen), he is far less likely to be labelled a terrorist in the press. In fact, his religious motivation may hardly be mentioned at all or if mentioned his interpretation of his faith will be taken as indicative of insanity. An insane Muslim with a sexual identity problem otoh will almost certainly be reported as a terrorist.

Yet the religious books of the two religions are very similar.

I am a Christian. I believe my religion is perfectly compatible with support for gay rights: the Bible, like the Q'uran can be interpreted in different ways. But if you are going to judge every Muslim by the actions of Omar Mateen, then I don't see why you shouldn't judge me by the actions of Eric Rudolph.

This is the statement by the Afghan-American Confence issued after the shooting:

"As members of the Afghan-American community, we are mourning the loss of life by the senseless act of hate in Orlando, FL. We send our heartfelt condolences and prayers out to the victims and their families.

This is a reminder that violence against marginalized communities remains a very real threat in this country. There are LGBTQ people in every community, including our own. AAC is committed to working together against homophobia and all forms of bigotry.

Together we stand. Together, our work continues.

Sincerely,
Afghan-American Conference Organizing Committee"

Funnily enough, as a Christian, I have never felt called upon to sign any petition distancing myself from atrocities are committed in the name of my religion. I am old enough to remember the times when the IRA were still going strong: nobody ever seemed to suggest that I and my fellow Lutherans should go around accepting some sort of responsibility as fellow Christians. Muslims, in my understanding, are just as diverse in their interpretation of their religion as Christians are. But if one group goes on a murder spree, somehow they are all (even the ones being murdered) implicated.

ChipStix · 15/06/2016 18:45

It sickens me to see politicians in the USA who are very anti LGBT suddenly come out in support of the community just because they think Islam is the problem

Yy to that

scatterolight · 15/06/2016 18:49

Corythatwas: "The problem is that on this point Islam is no more archaic and disgusting than Christianity"

We are honestly completely and utterly doomed.

I never thought I would see the day when our civilisation capitulated so easily to barbarism. And what's so sad is that we are being led there by people who think they are being questioning intellectuals.

As no one is going to lift a finger to resist Islam, the lesson I guess we should learn is just to not care anymore about these atrocities. Problem solved.

Where the IRA not freedom fighters fighting for their homeland more then a religious thing.

I see them more like Palestine and Israel fighting for their homelands. I don't expect Muslims to apolgise when they fight in Israel or Jews to apolgise when they kill Palestine's.

Those to me are conflicts of Territory not religion. The 50 LBGT people where kill casue they where deemed sinful.

Nataleejah · 15/06/2016 18:51

Pitching two minorities against each other gays vs muslims sure plays into "divide and conquer" tactics of those in power

almondpudding · 15/06/2016 18:56

The IRA were not fighting for religious reasons.

There are and have been various conflicts around the world involving Christians and/or Muslims where the conflicts are not motivated by religion.

The motivation and goals of ISIS are religious.

Northern Ireland gets described as Protestants vs. Catholics as either quick shorthand of to deliberately obscure the origins of one group as frequently being from Britain ancestrally, for political reasons.

pointythings · 15/06/2016 18:59

I'm sure the innocent civilians they killed in their bombing campaigns are perfectly happy and will accept that explanation with a smile on their faces. Hmm

AugustaFinkNottle · 15/06/2016 19:00

I agree. But you aren't allowed to voice concerns.

Not sure if you've noticed, Roonerspism, but by virtue of the fact that this thread exists you clearly are allowed to voice concerns. How precisely do you account for that?

AugustaFinkNottle · 15/06/2016 19:02

Who on earth is capitulating, scatterolight?

And are you seriously denying the existence of thousands of civilised, non-homophobic Muslims?

scatterolight · 15/06/2016 19:08

Augusta -

"More than half of Muslims in Britain think homosexuality should be illegal, while 47% believe teachers should not be gay, according to a report from Channel 4 which is the most comprehensive survey of British Muslims ever conducted."

Islam is not compatible with Western liberal societies. No amount of wishing otherwise is going to change that.

Most UK Christians support equal rights for gay people.

I don't want to go back to those days.

I don't want to even go back twenty years. It was awful.

Brokenbiscuit · 15/06/2016 19:53

I despise homophobia every bit as much as I despise islamophobia, racism, sexism, disablism and bigotry in all its guises.

People have done some vile things in the name of Islam. That doesn't make it ok for bigots like user to spout racist bile on the Internet.

Surferjet · 15/06/2016 19:54

Here you are again ego banging on about how awful Christians are to anyone who'll listen.
