to go to the loo every night before I get into bed.

Last night DH said 'Why do you always go for a wee before you get into bed, even if you only went half an hour ago?'

Doesn't everyone? He thinks not- he doesn't. I have done this since being a child. On the rare occasion I haven't done it, I don't sleep well. My bladder feels irritable in bed if it isn't empty. I have to get up in the middle of the night then.

Today, SIL comes round and he asks her if she always goes to the loo before she goes to bed and she said no.

Am I just odd?

I can't sleep unless I've only just had a wee, to the point of it being a bit of a thing (if I'm distracted on the way back to bed or take too long to get to sleep I have to go again....) I definitely would not be able to sleep unless I'd just emptied my bladder.

Have been like this since before DC but only since about my mid-20s, it's a bit of a psychological tic of mine. I think it was anxiety from when I lived in a bit of a manky rental flat where you had to go down two flights of stairs to a cold rickety bathroom to go to the loo, I was always paranoid that I'd need the loo in the night.

I thought everyone went for a wee just before going to sleep.

georgetteheyersbonnet · 12/06/2016 19:22

Even thinking 'do I need a pee' starts a chain reaction which results in definitely needing a pee.

Yep, me too!

BusStopBetty · 12/06/2016 19:23

Always. Otherwise I'll wake halfway through the night.

ohtheholidays · 12/06/2016 19:24

Normal I do,my DH does and our 5DC always do.
I don't want to have climbed into bed got comfortable started nodding off and then feel like I need to get up and use the toilet.

paddypants13 · 12/06/2016 19:30

LTB! That's the only solution! Wink

I have to wee before bed, so does dd, dh and my parents. It makes sense.

SuperFlyHigh · 12/06/2016 19:30

Yes I do this. Don't went to get up in night to wee but I often do this once a night too.

SoThatHappened · 12/06/2016 19:31

I can't help noticing I have a couple of colleagues who seem to go once a day in the working day! I don't know how people manage this.

I am one of those.

i dont need to go that much. Seems normal to me. Weird to me is people who piss every 5 minutes.

topcat2014 · 12/06/2016 19:33

I think, however, that it is possible to inadvertently 'train' the bladder in reverse - and thus find yourselves needing more and more trips.

Granted, I am coming at this from the male perspective - but I think it is still something to watch out for - so I try not to go on a timetable.

Isthiscorrect · 12/06/2016 19:33

Was happily tucked up in be mumsnetting and now have to get out again and pee. Just talking about peeing makes me need to pee. And I will need to get up in the night probably twice. This 3 litres of water a day will be the death of me for sure.

Lostlou · 12/06/2016 19:35

Just astonishing that someone DOESN'T do this! I hate getting to that point where you're sort of nodding off then you think 'no I need to get up to go to the loo'...

BarbaraofSeville · 12/06/2016 19:37

OP your DH is the weird one. Toilet before bed is normal isn't it?

Envy at all those who don't have to get up in the night. Even when I go just before I go to bed and wake up bursting at 5 or 6 am I have to go twice in between almost without fail. I'm not diabetic and haven't had any babies either. Fuck knows where it all comes from.

Beeziekn33ze · 12/06/2016 19:38

Last thing at night and first thing in the morning, ever since I was a child. I thought everyone did!

rookiemere · 12/06/2016 19:39

I certainly go just before bed. Then I still usually wake up around 4 and go in the night as well.

PigletJohn · 12/06/2016 19:40

I've sometimes wondered if people who habitually drink several pints of beer end up with a bigger bladder.

PPie10 · 12/06/2016 19:41

DH and i both do this too.

Penfold007 · 12/06/2016 19:42

Tinkle, teeth (& wash) then bed. Isn't that bed time law?

rockchick78 · 12/06/2016 19:43

Last thing at night and first thing in the morning for me! I thought everyone did the same...

PaintedDrivesAndPolishedGrass · 12/06/2016 19:43

I'm one of the minority not ruled by the bladder. If I need to go I will but I never go as a matter of routine and I never wake for one either. I drink a min of 3 litres of water a day and I've had 3 babies too. Once I'm in bed that is where I stay until the morning.

Gatekeeper · 12/06/2016 19:43

They are called 'top up wees' in our house. I couldn't get to sleep if I didn't have one.

voddiekeepsmesane · 12/06/2016 19:44

I do this too just before bed then again usually 30/45 mins later after having read/mumsnetted or facebooked, if I don't then within n hour of falling asleep I wake needing the toilet!

SusannahD · 12/06/2016 19:47

Yeah I always do and everyone els in our house

Schwabischeweihnachtskanne · 12/06/2016 19:48

I always go before bed and in the morning.

If I am home all day I will go every couple of hours but somehow at work I don't go at all during an 8 hour shift nor until I have rushed from work to pick the younger 2 kids up and got home - there just isn't time, we often don't get any kind of break at all and if we do we all sit together and have breakfast for 20 minutes, which we are kind of expected to do together as shop is talked and tasks for after the break divvied out... If I am on my period I make time to go, but otherwise it doesn't occur to me and I manage fine until I walk in the door, almost 10 hours after last going to the toilet, and as I try to get the key into the front door I am suddenly bursting (as, if I am unlucky, are both the kids I have in tow...).

HemanOrSheRa · 12/06/2016 19:56

Brushing my teeth makes me need a wee Confused. So if I have a wee, cleanse my face etc. then brush my teeth, I will always need another wee. Night or morning. I don't know what that is all about!

CPtart · 12/06/2016 20:03

I always do. And I'm up in the night for another one anyway. I sometimes make it to 5am ish without going and then I'm absolutely bursting.
I'm very rarely thirsty, can easily have a meal without a drink, and if I do have a coffee for example, I need to go within the hour. Proper full bladder and everything. Perhaps my body just doesn't need much fluid Confused

OhMrBadger · 12/06/2016 20:05

Yup, I've always done this.

And always before watching a film at the cinema. I have a friend who NEVER goes before the film, drinks a large drink during it and then has to sprint to the toilet straight afterwards. Madness.
