His face was a picture when Allison Pearson asked him to give it a rest, --put a sock in it, as all the men on the panel had their at turn at speaking and now 'she wanted to say something'
Priceless.

Also, why's he on it? He keeps butting in..

All the world needs is love and understanding

Like no-one's ever thought of that before Confused

Bigbiscuits · 10/06/2016 14:18

I think the beret is worn for the same reason that George Galloway wears a hat

Male pattern baldness

stareatthetvscreen · 10/06/2016 14:22

yeah bigbiscuits but surely he is up for wearing a wig?

what with all the tv stuff - or is that just an attention seeking schtick?

;)

Fine to say that when you are a millionaire comedian for a living, and a wannabe politician.....back in the real world......

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 10/06/2016 14:33

Erm just want to point out that he didn't actually say those words I did as he implied them Blush

bibbitybobbityyhat · 10/06/2016 14:33

I had a thread on Mumsnet three months ago about Eddie Izzard and his growing sense of self importance and quite unsubtle jostling for attention in the public consciousness, and was roundly shouted down with tons of added outrage.

I knew that thread would get s mention sooner or later. There was a bit of a difference, as I recall it: wasn't your thread about his multiple marathon mission being a not entirely altruistic venture? Whereas this thread is about him being out of his depth in the political arena. The fact that he was a bit of an arse on QT last night doesn't negate his charitable achievements nor does it necessarily support the theory that his charity work is a self-serving venture.

Chippednailvarnishing · 10/06/2016 14:47

I still like Eddie Izzard and I still think his marathon running is amazing and worthy of much public attention.
I just don't think last night was good for either the remain movement or his image as someone who wants to be a politician.

Two separate issues in my mind.

seanjo · 10/06/2016 14:49

"The EU freedom of movement automatically discriminates against ex colonies and in fact everywhere non EU. It is blatant discrimination. It is the one thing that really makes me cross. An unskilled person from within the EU can work anywhere but from India you need a visa.
I am generally pro Europe but I do find this point difficult.
As for the polarised arguments on question time. Well they show everyone up as inflexible and a little stupid."

This is correct, a Europeans only club! how racist is that?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 10/06/2016 14:53

No, it was the same thing. He has political ambitions. I had a sense that his latest marathon running was at least partly motivated by a desire to get himself in the public eye, ready for the next phase in his career. My op was worded really carefully to say that of course I admire him for the physical feat.

SpaceUnicorn · 10/06/2016 14:56

I agree. It's entirely possible to view his marathon undertakings as an act entirely unrelated to his desire to increase his public visibility in order to pursue political ambitions.

StayAChild · 10/06/2016 15:04

Surely EI must watch QT and observe the correct way to present yourself and your ideas in a professional way? How on Earth could anyone take him seriously when he wouldn't shut up? Like a pp, he very much reminded me of Russell Brand, who was also well out of his depth on the programme. EI was like a dog with a bone with NF's family being immigrants. I thought David Dimbleby should have intervened much sooner, but he almost seemed to be enjoying it.

As for the the many times he said we all need to get on in the World (or words to that effect), he couldn't even get on with the people sitting next to him in a civilised manner.

I accept these celebs are on there because they have a great passion for their cause and ideas, but until they conduct themselves in a decent manner, what they have to say becomes unimportant and appears self-promoting.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 10/06/2016 15:27

I disagree as well (with the seeming consensus here) that QT would be better without celebrities, and with only politicians.
I like to hear a variety of genuine, interesting views and in my opinion it's rare to get those from politicians.

stareatthetvscreen · 10/06/2016 15:28

of course its all self promoting

mummymeister · 10/06/2016 16:21

juggling - I wasn't suggesting all politicians. I think we could have a panel with union officials, business owners, third sector services providers. these are all people I want to hear from with their opinions and views.

I don't want to hear a nasty heckling third rate so called comedian who used to be funny but now takes himself far far too seriously.

I don't want to hear from journalists promoting their newspaper and its views.

I don't want to hear from actors and pop stars who haven't been elected to anything in their lives.

this is meant to be a serious discussion programme and that is not what we witnessed last night.

Winterbiscuit · 10/06/2016 16:23

On balance I think it's good to have non-politicians on QT. Sometimes what they say doesn't enhance the debate, but the same can also be said of some of the politicians. Usually QT seem to invite panellists who are most likely to contribute to the discussion in a helpful way, but there are a few who don't and it's harder to see why they are on the show.

SpaceUnicorn · 10/06/2016 16:25

As was rightly pointed out on the programme last night, it descended into pantomime.

mummymeister · 10/06/2016 16:30

winterbiscuit go back a few years and you never saw comedians, actors and the like on QT. Personally I preferred it that way.

spaceunicorn oh yes it did, oh no it didn't!!

Why sit farage next to EI other than to create farce. there are some seriously interesting and informative people out there on both sides and we could actually have had a good meaty discussion. If I want light entertainment i'll watch TOWIE or take me out.

squoosh · 10/06/2016 16:32

I had a thread on Mumsnet three months ago about Eddie Izzard and his growing sense of self importance and quite unsubtle jostling for attention in the public consciousness, and was roundly shouted down with tons of added outrage.

So why did you end up agreeing that you were being unreasonable on that thread?

squoosh · 10/06/2016 16:37

I generally veer between liking and being indifferent to Eddie Izzard. But from the snippets I've seen it doesn't sound as though this QT appearance was his greatest moment. An interest in politics doesn't mean you're cut out for politics.

I'm interested in politics but if I was on QT I'd end up throwing my tumbler at one person and poking my finger in another person's eye. Just as well I've never been invited on I suppose.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/06/2016 16:38

He was like an irritating child. Gone right off him Hmm

squoosh · 10/06/2016 16:40

He is an irrelevant z list celebrity with no business being on Question Time.

I often enjoy the non politician's contribution the most. They're all too busy toeing a particular party line.

A beret is a hard look to carry off with aplomb. They often look a bit 'Allo 'Allo.

derxa · 10/06/2016 16:42

It can't be good wearing the same beret everyday, can it? Grin Understatement of the day.
