To actually hate most things about UK summers

jubileepancakes · 08/06/2016 14:02

Where do I start?

Flys. In the house, shitting everywhere. Sitting on my fruit and playing bloody games with me.

Sweating. I can't go for a walk, do the school run without looking a sweaty mess. I never know what to wear either as its cloudy first thing then baking hot later. The gym is not a nice place to be and neither is actually going for a run.

Sun cream. Sticky and horrible. Kids hate having it on. I hate putting it on them.

Sunhats. On afore mentioned kids. Won't keep them on.

BBQs. Horrid. Too much meat, rolls going crispy where they've been left out. Sweaty cheese. Limp, warm salads.

Smug people sat outside pubs because they can

Everyone saying isn't the weather lovely.

Roll on Autumn. AIBU?

Agree with all with the exception of BBQ's!

memememe94 · 08/06/2016 19:09

Thank god I'm not the only one who hates summers! I'm in Scotland and detest the long days. I crave darkness and prowl around the house trying to shut out the bright sun at 10pm. I never sleep well during the summer--even with 4 black out blinds. Confused

MotherofPearl · 08/06/2016 19:09

YANBU at all.
My 5 week old baby is covered in heat rash. The hot weather these last few days has made her much more unsettled. Both my other DC wake up at the crack of dawn in summer. I long for Autumn.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/06/2016 19:10

The inevitable stories in the news about people who leave their children or dogs to overheat in a car, with devastating sometimes fatal results.
Angry Sad Angry

sall74 · 08/06/2016 19:11

We just don't seem to get pleasant summer weather any more, it's either just cool, grey and overcast or if the sun does come out it's oppressively humid and fiercely hot.

HostaFireandIce · 08/06/2016 19:25

Y'all need some air conditioning and screens on the windows. And to spend some time in a really hot climate for comparison.

I spent Summer in Australia once (hideous), and in China once (super-hideous) and a few weeks in America (not as bad because it wasn't too humid) and it was indeed in most ways worse than here. However, with the air con and screens on the windows, you hit upon some of the other things which are hideous about summer in the UK. Because it never gets that hot relatively speaking, we have done nothing to deal with the heat. Nowhere has air con, not even big tourist attractions on the whole, and certainly not any normal person's house. By comparison, the student house I stayed in in America did!
Any yes, I am somewhat introverted.

Notagainmun · 08/06/2016 19:25

Love summer until the bloody wasps start being a pain. Then then the end of the summer when the giant spiders come in.

jubileepancakes · 08/06/2016 19:31

I'm not an introvert but summer makes me wish I was. I feel like a dark cloud has come over me when I get a BBQ invite Angry particularly if it's an all day boozy type one. I've usually got a banging headache after an hour.

Yep, I hate it. I lived somewhere very hot (abroad) for many years but it was okay despite being 32 degrees all year round because everything was geared up to it, and we had aircon!

I do hate the UK summer for me but that's mostly because I am overweight. I am also very pale, and have psoriasis and varicose veins so hate exposing my flesh. I also have ginormous boobs which make strappy tops etc out of the question. Sleep is a nightmare in hot weather.

But...I do love the long evenings, love the fact that everything looks so beautiful, my DD can play outside long into the evening, we can have BBQs and sit out by the firepit with a glass of vino, I can walk the dog at 10.00pm and not be cold and wet, we can go on picnics, go camping, and everyone is more relaxed and happier.

So YANBU but also YABU!

NotYoda · 08/06/2016 19:59

Noisy people in gardens

I love Spring, but when it gets hot enough that you have to wear a skirt, and be smothered in sun cream. I dislike it

OasisOrBlur · 08/06/2016 20:08

Smug people sat outside pubs because they can

Eh..? Confused What could possibly be wrong with that. Are they even smug..?

I love the Summer. Not too bothered about Bbqs, I'd rather have a really wonderful salad and chilled wine, but the only thing I hate is when it's a big disappointing washout Sad.

When everything lines up and the weather gods are in a good mood, a lovely English Summer is divine.

Swollen fucking ankles.....I have cankles anyway, so having them swell is not attractive.
I have wide chubby feet and would love to wear strappy sandals but can't.
My head sweats- the rest of my body is ok-but I end up with wet hair. Horrible horrible horrible.
Love the autumn...my very favourite season!

jubileepancakes · 08/06/2016 20:22

I believe them to be the same smug people who sit in cafe windows on a wet day...

Summer also brings out the people (strangers, generally oldish men) who ask you on the street, "hot enough for you?" I have no idea what one is supposed to say in response. A weak smile is generally all I can muster.

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 08/06/2016 20:35

I prefer Autumn/Spring. Humid, muggy weather gives me headaches. As it gets light so early I wake up and need the loo so can't lie in until my usual time 7.30 am. The days seem longer but I don't have the energy levels to get lots of stuff done. I vacuum/iron very early morning as it's too hot later on.

I love my garden but on very dry days I have to go out with watering cans (maybe four or more journeys) to make sure that things survive. Roses need spraying against greenfly. Hair frizzy and curly. Ugh.

memememe94 · 08/06/2016 20:36

This is one article on reverse SAD. www.psychologytoday.com/blog/brain-babble/201501/reverse-seasonal-affective-disorder-sad-in-the-summer

Makes a lot of sense to me. I have bipolar and always at my lowest during the summer.

RainIsAGoodThing · 08/06/2016 20:45

Oh I love the summer. You cannot convince me. In fact I'm sat in a beer garden waiting for DP to bring me a G&T right now.

Lilaclily · 08/06/2016 20:47

I'm so Envy
I'm stuck at home with the dcs
Would love to be in a beer garden right now with a g and t and bbq on the go

TheTurtleMoves · 08/06/2016 20:58

Yup, I'm definitely on the introverted side and is definitely partly feeling under pressure to be sociable and being unable to hide because it's so bloody light that contributes towards me feeling grumpy about summer.

If I could guarantee a quiet summer, I could tolerate it much better.

pollyglot · 08/06/2016 21:22

I love and miss the British summer so much. I spent 12 years there and simply loved the idiosyncracies, unpredictability, but also the sheer beauty of the British countryside at that time of the year. It was the grey, bleak winters that drove me back to the South Pacific.

StubbleTurnips · 08/06/2016 21:29

Definitely introverted here.

What I love most about Autumn / Winter - walking the dog on a bitterly cold day and coming home to slow cooker beef stew. Wrapping up warm, a cold bed with hot water bottle and lots of blankets. Drawing the curtains early.

God the forced frivolity of summer Angry yeah let's sit and burn in the sun, whilst some random person over cooks the bbq, the drinks are always warm and food is congealing in the heat. DH suffers terrible hay fever so we have a get out clause to leave early.

At Strensham services on Sunday I saw a man in a deckchair like it was the Costa del sol with nothing but a pair of micro shorts on Shock I definitely don't want to see all that Confused

memememe94 · 08/06/2016 21:32

I'm not an introvert. I don't mind the weather so much; it's the awful imbalance between light/dark that comes with Scottish summers. I just hate bright sunshine at 10pm, followed by a gloominess and then light again at 4am. I've spent summers in Mississippi and surrounding states and prefer it because it at least gets dark at a 'normal' time.

ShelaghTurner · 08/06/2016 21:53

Fucking hate it. Every single minute of it. Interested to read that article on reverse SAD because I swear I have that. I'm fine and dandy September to April. after that I am depressed, angry, stressed and bloody miserable. Bring on Autumn, bonfire night, Halloween, smokey evenings, dark nights, scarves...

MotherofPearl · 08/06/2016 21:59

Totally agree Shelagh. Yes, bring on all those things, plus red wine, hot chocolate, lovely stews, steamed puddings...
