OK I'm sorry if I'm putting people off their breakfast. But I have never bothered much with doing anything about my hair 'down there'. I am not a hairy person so it's not like it's hugely overgrown(!). But all I really do is shave my bikini line, like once a year if I'm going on holiday (I don't wear a high-cut swimsuit). Seriously, what else do other people do? I'm worried now that I look like I'm smuggling a ferret down there whenever I go swimming. Should I be trimming it on a regular basis?

I am also of an era when nobody did anything to their bikini line - and most women also didn't bother with hairy thighs. It was sort of accepted that you only shaved up to your knees Grin now you're meant to micromanage every single bit!

"
The very posters who usually seem to talk at length about womens rights are taking the piss out of those who choose to do something they personally wouldn't" You have a very strange definition of "taking the piss out of"!

Why are you so very sure that there is no link between women deciding collectively to remove their pubic hair and the widening access to porn- where women have often removed their pubic hair? I'm not saying there is a connection-but how can you be so sure there isn't?

VestalVirgin · 04/06/2016 15:20

Try actually reading the thread! Every single poster says: do what you like, no-one cares. How the fuck do you get "feminazis are trying to make me be hairy" waahs from that?

Well, "do what you like" implies that doing what you like might actually NOT be the exact same as turning your ladygarden in the Desolation of Smaug, which in turn forces them to think about their own choosey choices that just happen to, perfectly coincidentally, perfectly align with patriarchal norms.

It is a statement that causes discomfort, and therefore, in the darkness of the mind, turns into evil feminazis telling them what to do.

With regard to ladygarden gardening I have always found the Woods of Lórien more aesthetically pleasing than the Desolation of Smaug. Grin

LogicalThinking · 04/06/2016 15:32

I do wonder why some people who remove their pubic hair get so angry about it. It's almost as if they don't like being asked to think about why they do it. Very odd.
I know exactly why I remove my pubic hair. It's because I love how it feels when I am hairless. It feels fabulous!
I first discovered this as a teenager in the 80s, long before I had a boyfriend or had much sight of porn. The only soft porn images that I had seen all had full bushes.
I have shaved on and off for the last 30+ years. My DH was quite shocked when he first found out. He's happy either way, though he does like it freshly shaved, but there is absolutely no question that sex is better for me when bald.

I have been told that by shaving, I am adding to the pressure felt by other women to do the same when they don't want to. I find that a shame but I don't agree. I think women need to be more confident to go with what they want for themselves, without criticising other women.

Desolation of Smaug Grin might have to start usubg that to refer to my lady garden.

I quite like being able to be all - choosey, choosey choicey.

I do find this question interesting.
I think it is undeniable that there is a link, but I don't think that's the whole story and I think it is a huge over-simplification to suggest it's all down to porn.

I think a lot of women have removed their pubic hair because there are a lot of women doing it and they feel the social pressure to conform. They try it out to see what it is like. Some love it, others hate it and never do it again. Some may do it for a while. But, to continuously do it for decades, I can't help thinking that many women do it because they really prefer it bald. They may have various reasons but the preference is their own, it's not just to keep their porn-obsessed men happy.

branofthemist · 04/06/2016 15:52

I am pretty sure some women do shave their public hair because they feel pressure to.

But I am also 100% positive that, that isn't the case for all or most.

It's not for me. Other people have mentioned fashion.hair fashions come and go, why not pubic ones.

Why assume that all women that to any hair removal are doing so because of outside influences?

Hodooooooooor · 04/06/2016 15:58

Calm down. deep breath . Accept women can do as they choose. Doesn't matter why, to use your delightful turn of phrase people should stop ' whining 'but but its doesn't stop you sweating!!!'. so what? they like it and choose it

Just accept it. they like it, they do it. you may or not. see that's how it works. Doesn't matter about your 'facts'

Does anyone even READ before going off on this shit? I couldn't care less who does what. I haven't commented on anyone shaving or why they do it. I accept that anyone can do what the fuck they like, I could not be less interested.
But FACTS always matter. FACTS are the entire point. All I did was point out the difference between "hair makes you sweat more" and "hair makes me feel more sweaty". One is a statement of fact (although it was actually wrong" and one is an opinion. You see?
Why is there so much stupid around today?

branofthemist · 04/06/2016 16:12

Why is there so much stupid around today?

I was thinking the same thing! Grin

Other people have mentioned fashion.hair fashions come and go, why not pubic ones.

And you really think fashion is about you making a choice in a vacuum? Is fashion not the most obvious example of people choosing to do something because other people are doing it and it has become the norm?

Like ugly haircuts - decades afterwards, people have no idea why they ever thought that would look good, but at the time, they would probably have said that it was a choice they made, in full command of their mental faculties.

An ugly haircut is harmless. Shaving sensitive skin is not entirely without risks. Make up with lead in it is very dangerous. As is cosmetic surgery.

Fashions also reflect the society they take place in. If millions of women feel the need to make their skin appear as white as possible, there's a reason for that.

do you you usually make a point of quoting people's posts and try to change them into something else?

The rest of that post (before the part you quoted) makes clear that I do think some people feel they pressured. That there are different reasons.

Simply just because some people feel they have to, doesn't mean that's the reason everyone does.

branofthemist · 04/06/2016 16:42

Shaving sensitive skin is not entirely without risks.

Not everyone who shaves, wet shaves it bald.

I crop my with trimmers. It's ver short not shaved. It's harmless. I ah e never had a problem caused by it. No uncomfortable regrowth, no rise in infections, no sore skin. So no more causing a problem than a crap haircut. In fact less of a problem, since no one else sees it.

The assumption that everyone who grooms down there, strips it all off, is a bit odd.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/06/2016 17:03

I used to work in the middle east in health care, I looked after lots of women who shaved, I doubt they were influenced by porn.

Why not?

You're not a classics scholar then Hodooooooor - Aristophanes was writing about ladies with bald minges in 411bce. He wrote about dildos too. Have a look at Lysistrata. It's hilarious. Smile

Birdsgottafly · 04/06/2016 17:35

Roman/Greek/ Other Women removed their body hair (as did the men).

This went on across Europe and in the UK until Women were told that enjoying sex was bad.

Removing body hair, especially pubic hair, was then branded the behaviour of a Harlot and we became the property of the Male head of the household.

The Victorian era worked hard to quash Female sexuality.

So really we should ask "why did we stop removing it?"

I've got a problem with the Porn Industry (not Porn), but if the fashion came back because people, once again, could have the sex life they wanted, I don't consider that a bad thing.

What's bad, is how influenced we are by the base media (a lot of it Women hating) and adverts that sparked all this, telling us what we should do.

missbishi · 04/06/2016 17:52

I expect the Middle Eastern ladies removed the hair for religious reasons.

sigmaFTlabarinth · 04/06/2016 17:59

I've suggested from time to time that DW tried different styles, but she basically tells me to sod off as it's too time consuming (and itchy) to wait for it to grow out to try something different. For her its a bog standard thing to do pits and bits in the shower. I think at most I've seen her with a week or so's grow out cos she's been ill or something.

sigmaFTlabarinth · 04/06/2016 18:06

The bit about middle easter ladies it a bit of an urban myth. in no religious texts anywhere does god (or gods) say "no full fur as it is an affront to mine eyes - laydees". There are a few additions to religious texts that refer to the hair on ones hair, that why Orthodox people ware hats/scarfs/cuples/tayqayahs. That its either rude to god to show it or it upsets god if you cut it.

Porn is not readily available in Saudi, the internet is very restricted. Women can't drive cars, I doubt they would watch porn in their spare time even if available.

Perhaps it is not the women watching the porn, but the men, who then make suggestions...
