To ask how often you wash your hair?

Now, I shower every morning and sometimes have a bath in addition (as a luxury) in the evening. But I only wash my hair twice a week. Which I thought was pretty normal and acceptable until it came up in conversation with a friend who had a look of Shock barely concealed horror. She washes hers at least every other day and thinks it's poor personal hygiene to go more than two days without clean hair.

Perfectly fine with being called a scuzzy grunge pot (I really don't think I am!) but curious to know which of us, if either, you think is BU.

Every other day. If I wash it daily, it begins to fall out, and I don't want to end up bald !

Mildred007 · 30/05/2016 17:28

Yep definitely just depends on hair type. I do mine every other day but I would do it less if I could but mine is too greasy for my liking by day 3. YANBU.

PestilentialCat · 30/05/2016 17:28

Most days. If I'm going out in the evening I often wash it before I go out rather than that morning, then not again till 2 days later. If there is any smell of cooking from the night before I wash it, even if it looks okay.

BoatyMcBoat · 30/05/2016 17:28

About twice a week. I used to wash it every day when I was living in central London, travelling on the tube or buses every day. It's filthy down there! Now I live in the SW and it's generally unnecessary to do it more often.

AlcoChocs · 30/05/2016 17:29

Whenever it looks or feels like it needs washing, varies between 3 - 8 days.. My hair's quite dry and flyaway and usually looks better a few days after washing.

BennyTheBall · 30/05/2016 17:29

I have really long, wavy hair. I used to wash it every day.

A couple of years ago, I had a hair epiphany and now wash it twice a week, max. I put it in a loose bun at night and it's perfect in the morning.

I shower twice a day and often have a bath too. My hair isn't greasy, ever, so that helps. I can smell my children's hair at 20 paces if they go a day without hair washing - but they have grease prone hair.

rockchick78 · 30/05/2016 17:31

I wash mine once a week, and also use dry shampoo - I have hair extensions though and if I wash any more than that they get really dry and break...

notthestereotype1 · 30/05/2016 17:32

Twice a week, but I dry shampoo in between otherwise it would be every other day. That would be ok, but I have very long, thick hair which takes an age to dry (even with a hairdryer) and is heat damaged, so need to limit the damage although it's too late

katand2kits · 30/05/2016 17:34

No more than three days usually. I'd only go for a third day if I was staying home and wearing it in a bobble

purpleporpoise · 30/05/2016 17:37

Shower daily but wash hair every 5-6 days

sminkypinky · 30/05/2016 17:37

Once a week. I've got curly hair that takes about an hour to dry so really don't have time to wash every day (even though I wish I could). I do the no poo thing mentioned upthread which has made my hair way less dry than it used to be.

soggyweetabix · 30/05/2016 17:39

Every day. it is very fine and looks very lank and greasy by the following day. Yes, I know that the grease is probably caused by frequent washing, but I love the feel of newly washed hair and wouldn't countenance washing it any less.

oldlaundbooth · 30/05/2016 17:40

Every other day.

If I wash it every day it's a lank, greasy mess.

Every other day is about right. Wish I could leave it longer: if I leave it 3/4 days it's lovely after, but I hate those two chip pan days in the run up to the wash.

Envious of those weekly washers with thick lustrous hair!

I don't think being fair haired helps either. We are grease-prone.

applecatchers36 · 30/05/2016 17:41

About twice a week and I use dry shampoo in between so it is not greasy and limp

WhispersFFSunderBreath · 30/05/2016 17:44

Every day but I wish I could go from week to week. My hair is so fine. It's literally greasy at the end of every day. I've tried stretching it out but unless I don't have to leave the house or see anyone, it's impossible as its looks THAT bad. On the flip side, cause I hate it so much, k don't wash my girls hair at all. Probably once every few months. I don't want them to fall in the trap I'm in and is is better not too do it often. My girls have beautiful hair and it doesn't smell, despite what people might think. Friends are shocked when I tell them.. Usually after they comment on how beautiful their hair is.

Phalenopsisgirl · 30/05/2016 17:52

I used to every day when I was younger but now every 2-3, more than that leaves it really dry

notamummy10 · 30/05/2016 17:57

1-2 times a week, my hair is healthy and thick despite being coloured.

Hastalapasta · 30/05/2016 17:59

Another one for every 2-3 days here. Quite short hair, very good condition!

Drinksforeveryone · 30/05/2016 18:07

At least once a day.

Depends on how many exercise sessions I do in a day.

It is very short though - so needs to be washed after exercise.

NewLife4Me · 30/05/2016 18:10

Every other day, it's long, very curly and takes about 10 hours to fully dry.
if I leave it any longer I have dreds.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 30/05/2016 18:28

Once a week when I was bleached blonde, now about twice a week. I have thick, long curly hair and I certainly don't have an hour every morning/evening to devote to preventing myself looking like I've shoved my fingers in a plug socket Hmm
I shower once or twice a day and I do like the feeling of clean after washing my hair but it's just not practical with hair like mine and two very young children.

Lorraine46 · 30/05/2016 18:31

Your hair has natural oils in it and to wash it every day or every other day is really too much as it doesn't really need it! I use dry shampoo in between washes!

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 30/05/2016 18:55

Depends on what type of hair you have. Fine straight hair usually needs more washing than dry / coarse / curly hair for eg. No point comparing.

asstnitoma · 30/05/2016 18:58

Seriously. Some of the things on here are totally ridiculous. You each have very different hair! I have to wash mine every other day, if not it looks like you could fry an egg on my head. My best friend gets away with once a week, if that!

SingaSong12 · 30/05/2016 19:04

OP think your friend is a bit ridiculous. I was my hair every day but only because I can't control it in any other way - I'd have to soak it anyway. The only time I think it might need to be washed whatever type of hair is if you do activities that can make your hair dirty or smell. Otherwise depends on your hair.
