To ask how often you wash your hair?

Now, I shower every morning and sometimes have a bath in addition (as a luxury) in the evening. But I only wash my hair twice a week. Which I thought was pretty normal and acceptable until it came up in conversation with a friend who had a look of Shock barely concealed horror. She washes hers at least every other day and thinks it's poor personal hygiene to go more than two days without clean hair.

Perfectly fine with being called a scuzzy grunge pot (I really don't think I am!) but curious to know which of us, if either, you think is BU.

Every hour. Anything else is minging.

Stanners78 · 30/05/2016 23:49

Once a week. Naturally curly hair so it doesnt get greasy easily

Nikkikaren13 · 31/05/2016 06:19

Mine needs doing every day because it gets greasy quick but everybody's hair is different. It obviously hasn't affected how your hair looks as your 'friend' didn't notice it being 'dirty'!

magratvonlipwig · 31/05/2016 07:48

Every third day unless I feel sweaty. My hair is clean and shiny. I shower every day sometimes twice. I wear a shower cap, and 're straighten if needed.
The horror from your friend is ridiculous.

My hairdresser told me, when i used to wash it daily, overwashing is the cause of limp or greasy hair, that the first time I didn't do it daily it would be horrible but would correct itself after a week. She was right. That was 20 years ago and I never looked back.

joseyjo79 · 31/05/2016 08:32

For me it's whenever it needs washing! That might be every day, or every 3/4 days. Your friends is BUR to call you a 'scuzzy grunge pot' as your hair just might not need washing as frequently as hers

pinkmagic1 · 31/05/2016 08:36

Every other day, shower daily though. I sometimes stretch it out to 3 days but it starts to feel yucky.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/05/2016 09:22

I have very fine hair, that gets greasy very fast, so if I don't wash it every day, it looks terrible - plastered flat to my head. My late MIL, on the other hand, had equally fine hair, but it never got greasy, and she could go days without washing it, and it looked clean.

I wouldn't have dreamt of calling her a 'scuzzy grunge pot' - I was a bit jealous that she didn't have to wash her hair every day!

Your friend was being very unreasonable, OP.

LaBuenaVida · 31/05/2016 10:15

I used to wash mine every day. Until I happened to mention it to my hairdresser - who was horrified. Said I was washing out all my natural oils. At the time my hair was really drying out - and that was the reason why. Anyway, now do every other day - sometimes every 3 days. And my hair is reaping the rewards...

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/05/2016 10:32

When I was growing up, mum only let me wash my hair twice a week - mainly because we had a very old immersion heater that cost a lot to use, and didn't have a thermostat, so hair washing or having a bath meant putting the immersion on specially, and making sure it didn't overheat.

I hated it, because my hair got so greasy, and I just felt so dirty. I remember leaning my head against a window at school, and leaving a clear circle of grease on the glass - which mortified me.

Ever since then, I have needed to keep my hair feeling clean.

We aren't all identical - we have different skin and hair, so no one haircare regime is going to suit everyone. Each to their own, I say.

HairySubject · 31/05/2016 10:38

On average twice a week. I was washing it every day/every other day but it is now red and it just fades so fast so I have cut right back. I wash and blow dry on the first day, the second day it is fine and the third day it needs a bit of dry shampoo to look presentable. Then wash again at the beginning of the fourth day and repeat.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/05/2016 10:50

Without wanting to derail the thread - does anyone have any recommendations for a dry shampoo for very fine, greasy hair? I have tried one or two, but haven't found one that works for me.

Thanks in advance.

Unless you work in a coal mine, I think once a week is fine Grin. Nobody I'd that dirty. Just washing away all your natural oils doing it anymore

The people I know that wash every day have very fine or not a lot of hair that looks greasy if they don't wash every day. The compliments I get about my hair are always when I've not washed it for a few days but I find I can smell it if I leave it longer than say 4 days and it is most unpleasant.

bellybuttonfairy · 31/05/2016 11:17

I have fine greasy hair. On the second day - it looks really greasy and just lies flat to my head with greasy strands framing my face.

So mine gets washed daily - I always leave it dry naturally and never use products/heat on it.

As it's so fine - it dries in 30 mins.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/05/2016 11:24

Charlie - I look like I've been dipped in the chip pan, after a couple of days without washing my hair - so heaven knows what I'd look like after a week! If my hair stayed looking and feeling clean, I wouldn't wash it every day - but it doesn't, so I can't.

I absolutely hate the feeling of my greasy hair plastered to my head - it is a horrible sensation.

I'm sorry, but it is plain daft to suggest that we can all use the same hair care regime - because we have different hair and scalps - and that the only reason for washing your hair more than once a week is working in a coal mine! What about people who do very physical jobs, where their head and hair get sweaty? Or people who spend a lot of time in urban areas, with lots of pollution in the air?

What about people like me, with very greasy hair?

Maybe you don't know what it feels like to have your hair plastered in a greasy mass to your head - if so, I envy you - but that's my reality if I don't wash my hair every day. It makes my head feel hot and itchy, and lowers what little self-esteem and self confidence I have.

FankEweVeryMuch · 31/05/2016 11:27

Once a week, works for me, I don't have time to wash it more.

Kim82 · 31/05/2016 11:27

I shower daily and wash my hair every other day. I have to tie it back on the second day as it looks too greasy to wear down. I look like I have washed my hair in a chip pan if I don't wash it every other day.

Charliechuck94 · 31/05/2016 11:42

Yeah no I'm a hairdresser actually. Your hair gets looks like it been in a chip pan because it's over compensating. Most shop brought shampoo is full of plastic that is harmful to you hair, stripping it of all its natural protein. The hair has the same ph balance as skin, making it slightly acidic. Ph between 4.5 5.5. The company's do this to your hair so you have to wash it more often, there for spending more money. Diet also has a major effect on the condition of your hair.

JustDanceAddict · 31/05/2016 11:43

Usually every 3 days so just over twice a week. It's a faff to dry so try and do it well twice a week than have to re-wash after a day or so. I think it really depends on type of hair you have, your lifestyle, etc.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/05/2016 11:48

My hair doesn't overcompensate, I just have very straight, very silky hair so any scalp oils spread straight down the hair shaft making it greasy quickly.

I wash my hair every other day.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/05/2016 11:50

Whereas my friend has a gorgeous mass of long, thick curly hair that needs washing once a week if that. Downside is it takes approximately a week for it to dry fully!

throckenholt · 31/05/2016 11:54

Once a week. It looks best about 2-3 days after I wash it.

I gave up caring what other people do or think I should do a long time ago :)

Personally I think people waste a fortune messing around with hair that would be much better left to its own devices.

FuzzyOwl · 31/05/2016 12:04

Every two or three days. On day one it looks frizzy, day two it looks great and day three it stars to look a bit lank. It is better now that I have switched to really cheap shampoo and conditioner!
