To ask how often you wash your hair?

Now, I shower every morning and sometimes have a bath in addition (as a luxury) in the evening. But I only wash my hair twice a week. Which I thought was pretty normal and acceptable until it came up in conversation with a friend who had a look of Shock barely concealed horror. She washes hers at least every other day and thinks it's poor personal hygiene to go more than two days without clean hair.

Perfectly fine with being called a scuzzy grunge pot (I really don't think I am!) but curious to know which of us, if either, you think is BU.

Every other day but sometimes I leave it 3 days over the weekend and use a bit of dry shampoo. I work in the city though and find my hair can get quite rank on the tube. I've also found that my hair has got thinner since I had DDs which makes it get greasier and limper quicker Sad dry shampoo is my friend.

Twice per week

Naicehamshop · 01/06/2016 13:42

Listen, you people who say that your hair doesn't smell if you don't wash it - believe me, it does; you have just become so used to it that you can't smell it anymore.
You wouldn't leave any other part of your body unwashed, so why leave your hair? Confused

I generally wash mine every other day, sometimes I leave it a day longer if it doesn't look too bad and I'm running late. Or in summer and it's very hot sometimes I wash it every day.

My flatmate only washes her hair twice a week but hers is very dry. She was horrified at how often I wash mine but I could fry chips in it if I go longer than 2 days. It gets greasy quickly, my head starts to itch and yes it does smell (although maybe it's just me who can smell it) and it feels absolutely rank.

LordoftheTits · 01/06/2016 13:46

Every other day, with dry shampoo on the day in between. I wish I could go longer as drying and styling my hair is a pain in the arse and I'm sure it would be a lot healthier but it looks too greasy to leave my house on the third day.

If I'm in the house all weekend and not going anywhere, I'll wash it on the Thursday night and not wash it again until Monday morning just to give it a bit of a break.

I used to wash my hair everyday but had endless problems with my scalp (as well as hair that got greasy very quickly). Seven years ago I stopped washing my hair for two months then started using an organic shampoo with very few ingredients once a week and the problems stopped.

Since having my DS I've gone up to washing my hair twice a week.

This reminds me of having this conversation with my grandmother (she'd be 100 if she was alive now). She washed her hair 3 times in the summer and twice in the winter and that was perfectly acceptable. She thought I was insane to wash it as often as I do and told me that I would lose the colour and my hair would go grey early. Grin Funny how things have changed so much but I guess with only an outside toilet and little access to hot water having the luxury of being able to wash your hair so often was an alien concept to her. When she lived in a care home they washed her hair once a week and she hated it.

sue51 · 01/06/2016 14:12

Once a week. I have very curly hair and water is my enemy.

Lonecatwithkitten · 01/06/2016 14:15

Like sue curly hair and very dry skin, so dry scalp. Once a week unless I get really dirty in between.

Pominoz1 · 01/06/2016 22:33

Every day since the age of 14 ... Now 50 and it hasn't done it any harm. I can't stand the feel of 'heavy' dirty hair.

whois · 01/06/2016 22:51

Every 2 or 3 days. Depending on level of sweat and exercise maybe every day like if I've been doing cardio.

MamaBear98 · 01/06/2016 23:16

I wash my non-dyed,medium length brown with shampoo and conditioner every 2-3 days if possible (sometimes I don't get to do it for 4-it depends on if I'm busy or not)-I'm very hygiene concious so I can't stand having greasy, itchy, dandruffy hair...

Iknownuffink · 02/06/2016 00:16

My hair is falling out due to hormone meds for breast cancer.

My scalp will not tolerate daily washing with chemicals.

pearlylum · 02/06/2016 07:32

I was mine every other day. I would like to do it every day, but I have a lot of hair and it's long, so takes ages to blow dry. I don't like going out with wet hair.

bobbywash · 02/06/2016 07:49

I haven't used shampoo or conditioner on my hair for at least 10 years, it took a bit of getting used to (it's short anyway) and for the first month or so was pretty nasty, but I read somewhere at the time that shampoo and conditioner stripped away natural oils and could cause scalp problems (family history of eczema) but I do rinse it every day when I shower

BillSykesDog · 02/06/2016 08:18

Lol @ the hair smells comment. I remember the 90s when loads of people had dreads they rarely or never washed and they seldom smelled. It gets fresh air through it every day FFS!

I went to boarding school and I remember from there that everyone was different, from those who had greasy hair by teatime each day to curly haired girls who couldn't dream of a daily wash unless they wanted permanently wet frizzy hair.

But I guess it's just a MN inevitability that the 'scrub your entire body twice daily with bleach because otherwise you'll be disgustingly smelly dirty' brigade will come out.

Mine is long, wavy and thin, hates water, very frizzy, takes an hour or more to style. I wash it once weekly with the odd spray of dry shampoo. Sometimes if I don't have time I will dry shampoo it and go two weeks, tied in a pony tail for a second week.

cheapandcheerful · 02/06/2016 09:50

Every morning. Otherwise it feels greasy and lank.
