To ask how often you wash your hair?

Now, I shower every morning and sometimes have a bath in addition (as a luxury) in the evening. But I only wash my hair twice a week. Which I thought was pretty normal and acceptable until it came up in conversation with a friend who had a look of Shock barely concealed horror. She washes hers at least every other day and thinks it's poor personal hygiene to go more than two days without clean hair.

Perfectly fine with being called a scuzzy grunge pot (I really don't think I am!) but curious to know which of us, if either, you think is BU.

As long as I can! minimum of maybe 5 days to 10/14 days. I luckily don't suffered with a greasy scalp and find since I've done this my hair has been stunning in growth, condition and life! :)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/05/2016 12:18

Charlie - my hair used to look like I'd dipped it in a chip pan when it was only getting washed twice a week - it never got washed more than that until I left home at 18.

PinguForPresident · 31/05/2016 12:23

Once a week at the most. I'm currently on Day 10 since my last wash and it neither looks greasy no smells unpleasant.

My hair is very, very dry, though. Frequent washing would result in massive breakage.

MerryMarigold · 31/05/2016 12:25

Grin STDG. My primary school photos are hideous (think greasy hair with middle parting in bunches) but I think I put my foot down sometime in third year secondary.

theDudesmummy · 31/05/2016 13:10

It's weird. For my whole adult life until I was 45 I had to wash it every morning, or it just looked greasy and horrible. Then I was pregnant and suddenly I only had to wash it every two to three days and it looked fab! And now (seven years later) I can still get away with every second day.

perki100 · 31/05/2016 13:50

Every other day though I would leave it longer if I could!

LuciaInFurs · 31/05/2016 13:54

I wait at least two weeks between washes.

swelchphr · 31/05/2016 13:56

Every other day (every once in awhile, there may be 2 days in between), otherwise my hair gets too dry.

Mummytodaisyandbradley · 31/05/2016 13:57

I wash mine every 2 days that's all it needs it doesn't get greasy

dowhatnow · 31/05/2016 14:17

Mine goes greasy if I leave it more than every other day.

gingerboy1912 · 31/05/2016 14:33

Every other day

BananaThePoet · 31/05/2016 15:37

Everybody is different. It depends on what job you do, what amount of physical activity you do, what your body chemistry is, whether your hair is greasy or dry or normal and how much you sweat and what your hormone levels are etc etc etc

My take on it is that if your hair doesn't smell and if it looks nice then there is no need to wash it. However often that needs to be depends on the individual.

Pollaidh · 31/05/2016 16:39

I have dry, intensely curly hair which I blow-dry to waves. It turns to straw if I wash it every day and becomes unmanageable. I wash it every 7 days. If I train it (adding a day each time) I can get it to about 2 weeks, using dry shampoo at the end, but I'd rather not.

If I fiddle with my hair too much it gets greasy and smells and has to be washed earlier.

Once went 4 weeks. That was bad.

Wauden · 31/05/2016 22:32

Three times a week. People's scalp oil levels can be different, I guess. Still hunting for the best shampoo, though.

kittensandgin · 31/05/2016 22:55

Yeah no I'm a hairdresser actually. Your hair gets looks like it been in a chip pan because it's over compensating.

Sorry, Charliechuck, but the compensating and overproducing oil is a myth and total BS. Surprised a hairdresser wouldn't know that. Hmm

jadzy73 · 01/06/2016 01:16

would love to wash mine 2-3 times a week but unfortunatley I need to wash mine every day coz it's a greaseball after less than 24 hours :-(

AlMinzerAndHisPyramidOfDogs · 01/06/2016 03:33

Every single day. withouth fail. Always.
i have very greasy hair.
i can't 'bank' days, either. say, when i wash it 300 days in a row. i cant just say "oh that's fine, i've washed it so often i can take a holiday from it for one day."
it is dirty each and every morning.
sleeping on it makes it much worse.
and if i leave it for more than two days then there's a smell off it.
very grim indeed.
can't wait for menopause, when hopefully i'll dry out a bit.

mmgirish · 01/06/2016 04:01

Once sometimes twice a day. I'm jealous of people who can go longer. My hair is fine.

sashh · 01/06/2016 07:24

Every day. But my hair gets greasy quickly and I have psoriasis on my scalp which is treated with shampoo.

Friends who are black can go for ages, one can go a month between washes and her hair still looks fine.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/06/2016 08:02

"Sorry, Charliechuck, but the compensating and overproducing oil is a myth and total BS. Surprised a hairdresser wouldn't know that."

Thank you for that, kittensandgin - I felt really put down by Charlie's response.

Eliza22 · 01/06/2016 10:15

Every morning, in the shower. It dries naturally.

curlingandtwirling · 01/06/2016 12:01

I have quite thick frizzy long hair which turns greasy quickly. Every other day for me, until I started using that new clay shampoo. Now it lasts up to 4 days at a push. I've only been raving about it this morning to work colleagues.

jayner182 · 01/06/2016 12:40

Totally depends on your hair, if I wash mine every day its too fluffy and I cant do anything with it. Most hair dressers will tell you 2-3 times a week maximum.

Twice a week and maybe dry shampoo - I have to be at work for 7am after dropping DD of at nursery so no way could I do it every morning.

insan1tyscartching · 01/06/2016 12:53

Twice a week now as it is prone to dryness. When I was younger most days as it would get greasy,it has been one of the few benefits of getting older I suppose.

revealall · 01/06/2016 12:55

Every three days.

I'm amazed at the hair smells bad comments. I have never noticed anyone's hair smelling except for woman that use styling products ( and they smell lovely). Mine smells of cooking sometimes.
