Way back when I was in secondary school, of a year group of around 125, there were at least 6 Sarahs , 8 Emmas countless Claires, and an army of Amys. My own name was also a very popular one, there were 7 of us I think.....when I had my own DDs I was keen to avoid this, so after research on the office for national satistics website I chose a couple of old family names, that were ranked something like 225 & 210 most popular names of the previous years they were born.....to give you an idea of how sparsely used they are nowadays, I shall call them Shelia & Barbara ( these are examples only).....now the problem is this..... a fellow mum from our toddler group is pregnant with twins (identical), and has said if she has girls, she is going to call them the exact same names as my two....we live in a very small village, and her twins will be in the same year group as my youngest, now I realise I don't own the names, and ultimately there's not a lot I can do about it.....but AIBU to feel a bit pissed off, I even told her I thought it would be a bit weird, and why I chose my names, but my concerns didn't seem to register, we also have very similar sounding surnames, and ours is often mispronounced to the exact same as hers

If she would buy the same dress as someone and wear it to the same function then I don't see her joking about this. If she had bought it because she liked it and wore it elsewhere then fine, but to wear it to the same function is Angry

mmgirish · 16/05/2016 15:11

This is weird. What's her husband like?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 16/05/2016 15:16

I think she's winding you up! She's succeeded it would seem. Grin

IDontBelieveAnything · 16/05/2016 17:41

So, let's get this straight, as a made up EXAMPLE, your DC are called

Kathryn Ann Smyth and
Izabella Jayne Smyth

And she is proposing to call her twins the equivalent of
Kathryn Ann Smith and
Izabella Jayne Smith

Is that right? REALLY!!! Nah, she is having you on.

MrsLupo · 16/05/2016 18:39

She sounds barking and actually the nuttiness would bother me more than the names. What next? Is she going to change her name to yours by deed poll? Give her husband a makeover so he looks just like yours? I think I might be checking out property elsewhere too tbh.

manicinsomniac · 16/05/2016 19:05

With the middle names thrown in that is really, really weird.

Sure 210-250ish is not uncommon enough to have only 5 children named it though? For 2014 that's names like Rosa, Cara, Pearl and Rachel - there were still over 200 each of those born at ranks 220-245ish. Not 5!

Did you mean 2010-2050 - so names like Avril, Della, Elaine and Janice - they all ranked joint 2058th and had 13 'owners' in 2014. Seems more likely?

I also think you've given out enough indentifiable information that you might as well tell us the names Grin If name stealing lady reads this there's no way she won't recognise herself.

Hopefully she'll have boys.

paxillin · 16/05/2016 19:07

Tell her you've bought a couple of voodoo dolls for her twins and will jinx them unless she comes up with her own names.

rubybleu22 · 16/06/2016 21:48

SHE HAS GONE AND DONE IT

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 16/06/2016 21:54

Uh oh!

TheseLittleEarthquakes · 16/06/2016 21:56

What, she's had the babies and named them the same names as yours?

Haha she's insane!

snowy508601 · 16/06/2016 21:57

oh op, I think she is joking!, what with you having nearly the same surname

borntohula · 16/06/2016 21:58

quite flattering though, she obviously thinks you have good taste !

rollonthesummer · 16/06/2016 22:16

Really?!

Squiff85 · 16/06/2016 22:21

It does sound a little extreme! You don;t own the names but her copying does sound bizarre!

ChasedByBees · 16/06/2016 22:23

Oh dear, what was she thinking?

AntiHop · 16/06/2016 22:31

Has she registered the babies yet? If she hasn't yet then I think you need to tell her straight that it's going to cause loads of problems for all the kids. And talk to her dp.

BoboBunnyH0p · 16/06/2016 23:04

Totally weird, can't believe her partner agreed to the names unless he doesn't know about your DDs.

rubybleu22 · 21/06/2016 20:50

well its all happened here, she registered her girls, without the father being there, because he wouldn't allow it, her mum came around to apologise for her daughter, and explained that this type of thing has been going on with her since childhood, she said I should go to see her, and explain how I feel, and how weird it is, I told her i'd chosen because they were rather unusual nowadays, so she said, what should I call them then ??? I told her to maybe choose some of her own family names, she rang the next day and said what do you think about x & y, I honestly think if id said call them pig and goat she would of, she has now re-registered them, and phones me every day, her mum is trying to get her to speak to someone, but I don't think its a mental health issue, the whole village is asking me about it

2nds · 21/06/2016 21:02

If you have banged on and on about having youniquely spelt younique names to her then it's possible she's just taking the piss. Whatever even if she's serious I wouldn't give a shit I'd tell her to go ahead and I'd say "I'm honoured that means I've got great taste".

2nds · 21/06/2016 21:04

Ah sorry I've just seen the update. That's got to be a mh issue.

Beeziekn33ze · 21/06/2016 21:08

She seems to have little self confidence, finds making decisions difficult and sees you as a confident, decisive and successful person. More sad than anything really. Her DM and DH know she has problems.
A pity you couldn't have had a chat with her DM in when you first posted, it would have spared you the worry.
CAN you re-register births??

rubybleu22 · 21/06/2016 21:33

yes, within a year I believe

Beeziekn33ze · 22/06/2016 19:42

OP thanks, I never knew that!
