Quite surprised about the outcome actually but haven't read the legislation to see exactly what it says. Just hope lots of local authorities don't have to pay back fines now, because there will be even more cuts to services.

Looks like an Education Act might be added to the Queen's Speech next week to resolve the issue rather than relying on the Court of Appeal maybe?

That's really worrying shehas. What do you do when a child has D and V, drag them to the GP to keep school off your back? It's a real problem if school policies are forcing people into that, especially since NHS guidance doesn't mention contacting GP unless it's a long bout, and a lot of surgeries have specific policies against it.

Pisssssedofff · 15/05/2016 14:10

The trouble is these days for kids there's no getting away from stress if they are bullied it's on their phones, laptops, teachers bully them its relentless for them. I can remember getting in a right state over a haircut gone wrong and not wanting to go to school, these days some bastard would probably put it on Facebook

apple1992 · 15/05/2016 14:19

pissed, teachers bully them. Really?

apple1992 · 15/05/2016 14:20

I agree though about stress for teenagers. It is everyone and the Internet and phone make it 100x worse

apple1992 · 15/05/2016 14:20

*everywhere

Pisssssedofff · 15/05/2016 14:40

You don't think teachers bully them ? Jesus my 15 year old got hauled over the coals by her RE teacher, stood up in front of the class and the class was asked what happens to girls who don't do their home work ... End up on the dole Miss etc called out at her. She was stood there bright red and in tears by the time the teacher had finished publicly humiliating her. I wouldn't mind but she's predicted a bloody A * in RE which for a family that doesn't believe or Ho to religious services isn't too shabby

SuburbanRhonda · 15/05/2016 15:32

pisss

That's an unpleasant experience and I'm sure you made sure it was dealt with.

But by nobody's definition is that bullying.

Pisssssedofff · 15/05/2016 15:44

I disagree it is bullying and wasn't the first time or only child

lozster · 15/05/2016 16:02

One thing I grapple with - if this father (or any other parent for that matter) pre-booked the holiday (s) how did he know in advance his kid was going to be fit all year and not miss additional time off thus taking them over the 10% absence level?!

SuburbanRhonda · 15/05/2016 16:07

Here is the NSPCC definition of bullying:

Bullying is behaviour that hurts someone else – such as name calling, hitting, pushing, spreading rumours, threatening or undermining someone.

It can happen anywhere – at school, at home or online. It’s usually repeated over a long period of time and can hurt a child both physically and emotionally.

Is this what happened, pisss?

Pisssssedofff · 15/05/2016 16:15

It happened at school and undermined and hurt emotionally, is that enough boxes ticked for you Rhonda ?

harverina · 15/05/2016 16:15

Dd1 missed school this week because she was flower girl at a family wedding in another country so we had to keep her off two days to travel etc. Generally speaking she has good attendance - no idea what % but she has only ever been off due to genuine illnesses up until now. She does well in school - We do all of her homework with her properly and on time, read with her most nights etc. So I know a couple of days absence isn't a huge issue for her.

For some kids missing school to go on holiday could have a big impact so this is why I think head teachers need to have the ability to have 1:1 discussions with parents about the children individually. The issue is of course that some people just won't listen and will do what they want anyway.

pieceofpurplesky · 15/05/2016 16:28

Piss maybe you should home educate - that way you could holiday when you wanted, your DCs would not have to do homework, you would not have to deal with bullying, lazy, money grabbing teachers and as your DC are obviously incredibly intelligent they will be fine.
Or you could accept that YOUR experience is not what most other people have had to deal with - from your own education to now. I have only ever heard of a pupil being shouted at like that in private schools.

Pisssssedofff · 15/05/2016 16:31

Oh god no I don't want them under my feet all day. I do think school is something one endures though in most people's experience rather than enjoys. Including the teachers ☺️

SuburbanRhonda · 15/05/2016 16:41

It's not a question of ticking boxes for me, pisss Hmm.

It's whether your DD was bullied according to the definition accepted by a respected national charity for protecting children from abuse.

Pisssssedofff · 15/05/2016 16:53

Well it would appear to do so then wouldn't it. Bully bingo 😳

pieceofpurplesky · 15/05/2016 17:03

I don't endure my job. I am passionate about it, as are most of my colleagues. I would also say the majority of pupils enjoy school - not all of it but elements of it and don't see it as endurance. You must have had a really bad experience to be so bitter.

SuburbanRhonda · 15/05/2016 17:27

Oh dear, pisss.

NickiFury · 15/05/2016 17:44

There was an entire thread on here not so long ago with hundreds of stories about shit teachers and their bullying behaviour. People got believed on that thread though.....

Acorn44 · 15/05/2016 17:59

Hate to admit it, but in the past (at a previous school) I have seen colleagues bully students. Luckily very infrequently, but it does happen.

Pisssssedofff · 15/05/2016 18:10

I didn't mean to derail the thread

pieceofpurplesky · 15/05/2016 18:58

Nick I think the point is that not everybody has a negative view of teachers and education and that we are not all just enduring the job. The thread you are talking about also had many positive comments.
The initial point was that attendance does impact on results.

BoneyBackJefferson · 15/05/2016 19:05

Nicki

I could tell you of the absolute dick-head of a music teacher that I had.

But he was one of 10 or 12 teachers that I had at school and the rest were pretty good.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 16/05/2016 07:26

July holidays just about to rocket in price!
Prices are about supply and demand.
If demand in term time increases, so will the prices.
Some parents will now be thinking that 'since after the exams all that is done is videos and trips, why not take them out on holiday'.
If the NUT strikes, they have said it will be in the summer term after the exams over. So they also agree that a day off in July will harm nobody.
July becomes the new August.

witsender · 16/05/2016 11:06

That sounds like bullying to me Pissed, as a teacher and a governor that is not on.
