Quite surprised about the outcome actually but haven't read the legislation to see exactly what it says. Just hope lots of local authorities don't have to pay back fines now, because there will be even more cuts to services.

Looks like an Education Act might be added to the Queen's Speech next week to resolve the issue rather than relying on the Court of Appeal maybe?

Tbh it's about time teachers were judged on children's perform, the shit we had to put up with in the 80's/90's because pass or fail they got their wages was abismal

Pisssssedofff · 14/05/2016 18:10

I don't know any other job that is t performance measured, do you ?

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/05/2016 18:13

Pisssssedofff

Do you know of any other job that is assessed by how someone else performs?

pieceofpurplesky · 14/05/2016 18:16

Red it has been challenged but the fact is that if a pupil is not in they are not learning the curriculum that is set by the government. I don't put pressure on the kids - you do know they can read and watch the news? They see that to get in to college they need xyz grade and put pressure on themselves. My current year 11s are 'low ability' kids predicted grade Es. I spend most of my time building their self esteem and making them see that they are not failures as deemed by society as they can't reach the magic grade C. Schools are marked on progress of individual pupils now not overall percentage grade. I have worked my arse off to ensure that each and every one of these great kids have the tools to achieve this and cope in life after (English teacher). The only kid who is not going to do this? The one who has missed 8 weeks over the two year course due to holidays.
So yes it is linked.

Pisssssedofff · 14/05/2016 18:16

Yes, every management role out there. If my team doesn't perform I'd be sacked because it's my responsibility. Now I get that your team probably isn't as motivated as mine being children and you can't sack them and all that but still I'm judged by Retention as part of my targets do if I hire badly and have to let them go that's a huge cost tot the business and reflects badly on me

RedToothBrush · 14/05/2016 18:17

No you haven't challenged it, because its still current policy which you are still following...

Pisssssedofff · 14/05/2016 18:18

Not sure they have a lot of choice Red

pieceofpurplesky · 14/05/2016 18:18

Pissed but do your team take 20 days off on top of their holiday allowance and expect you to do that work for them as unpaid overtime?

pieceofpurplesky · 14/05/2016 18:19

Red I think the doctors strike is prime example of how much challenges do for the public sector - and the majority support doctors unlike teachers

Pisssssedofff · 14/05/2016 18:19

How many kids take 20 days holiday off a year .... As a percentage would you say ? Mine have shocking attendence this year for various reasons but they haven't had that much time off.

pieceofpurplesky · 14/05/2016 18:20

Many more than you would think pissed.

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/05/2016 18:20

Pisssssedofff

And your team will have a bought in as they get something out of it.

They also won't be measured on how someone else does for 2 hrs on one day of the year. Or on targets that have been set 5 years in advance before they went through puberty.

I actually don't mind prp but it should be based on something that teachers have control over.

dementedma · 14/05/2016 18:20

Surprised at the parents being fined for taking their dcs out for two or three days. Why ask permission for such a short space of time? Just phone in sickand no-one is any the wiser. Two days off isn't going to ruin an entire education!

SuburbanRhonda · 14/05/2016 18:21

But your team is made up of adults who are responsible for deciding for themselves whether they perform or not.

Children who are taken out of school by parents wanting to save money on their holiday aren't in the same situation as your team members because it won't be the child who books the holiday in term-time.

beresh · 14/05/2016 18:21

We're in Switzerland. I think the system here in our canton is really good:

  • 6 days no questions asked absence allowed over 3 years
  • 5 week staggered summer holiday
  • 2 week holidays in october, february/march, april/may staggered
  • in exceptional circumstances head teacher can authorise more absences, eg to allow contact with a divorced parent living in another country / give a child an opportunity to go to school in another country for a few months / travel around Australia for 6 weeks, on the understanding that school work is completed.
  • otherwise unauthorised fines are given based on income. Higher rate British taxpayer would be looking at around £2000 for 5 days.
pieceofpurplesky · 14/05/2016 18:22

I said unthread that one year I had five kids take two weeks off in a class of 25. Three of those had at least 15 days holiday plus illness (one had 5 weeks holiday)

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/05/2016 18:22

"No you haven't challenged it, because its still current policy which you are still following..."

Ah yes, the same theory that says if a child doesn't pass a test they are a bad teacher.

Pisssssedofff · 14/05/2016 18:23

I don't have control over every area in my team ... I get charged for our rental space off our profit and loss and we are in a shocking shit contract we signed before the recession and if I (team and I) don't make enough money to cover that rent again id be out in my ear. It's how the world works these days.

pieceofpurplesky · 14/05/2016 18:24

But pissed schools are not like the world they are about children. It's not the same.

Pisssssedofff · 14/05/2016 18:25

It is for teachers, schools are businesses now. I'm at uni too and my god that's changed in the twenty years since I last went. I got told off for non attendance 😂

SuburbanRhonda · 14/05/2016 18:26

But presumably if one of your team members is consistently under-performing they'll get weeded out at their appraisal? You can't do that to a child, you just have to just work hard to get them where they need to be despite the poor attendance.

Pisssssedofff · 14/05/2016 18:27

Not necessarily Rhonda, if they've been there a long time, pregnant, ill I'm going to work with them not just weed them out.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/05/2016 18:30

I didn't mean that, pisss.

Of course you wouldn't get rid of someone for being ill or pregnant. I said if they are underperforming.

pieceofpurplesky · 14/05/2016 18:32

Pissed you just don't get what people are trying to say.

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/05/2016 18:32

Pisssssedofff

So does your contract change from day to day, year to year? Or is it the same contract?

A class of children changes and evolves, if a child is moved in to the class the dynamic can change in a massive way.

The final grades that the children get not only change every year but have been known to change in the middle of the moderators marking due to external influences.

Not only that but with going back the the old method of only a percentage of pupils getting a specific grade, I can get the best results ever (percentage wise) but still fail my PRP because the grades were not high enough this year to push them past an ever changing grade threshold.
