To think there are size double standards on mumsnet?

So I read a thread and a model is being ripped apart for her looks and size.

There was even a comment about how the company should pay her to eat .... Could you imagine the outrage if it was a plus size model and I said the company should have her cut down on her portion sizes?

I'm not even skinny (size 10) but I just hate this double standard on mumsnet.

Oh! Well that's nice then. Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 16/05/2016 23:10

"society tells them the ideal is a size 2-6"

What silly exaggeration. Society tends to see an 8 to 10 as ideal for younger women and slightly larger sizes for older women.

"dieting, calorie cutting and other not healthy habits."

Dieting and calorie cutting are not in themselves unhealthy.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/05/2016 23:15

"when you see people with a healthy BMI come on here asking about "losing weight" it's usually not because they want to get healthy so they can run farther or lift heavier. It's because they want to look good in a bikini or fit a certain dress size."

And so what? Why judge that? I do a lot more wearing of dresses than I do of heavy lifting. Why can't I be interested in that?
Being healthier is a by-product.

Absolutely!
I wear dresses every day and due to my odd working hours and constant exposure to cake (!) I've gone from size 10 to 12. My bmi is healthy but I've no shame in admitting I've rejoined SW (where I lost my baby weight) to get off the stone I've put on. I don't feel happy with my weight so I will lose it- that's no ones business it my own.

CallWaiting · 17/05/2016 06:11

Seriously, this is my last post in this thread because the stupid just seems too strong here:

those moaning of fat shaming on this thread seem to be arguing that nobody who's in the healthy weight range should ever lose weight.

Everyone can lose or gain weight as they please. The question is why someone who is in a healthy weight range would want to lose weight. Generally it comes down to vanity, which isn't really a healthy reason to lose weight.

I do a lot more wearing of dresses than I do of heavy lifting. Why can't I be interested in that?

Vanity: definition:

: the quality of people who have too much pride in their own appearance, abilities, achievements, etc. : the quality of being vain

: something (such as a belief or a way of behaving) which shows that you have too much pride in yourself, your social status, etc.

And finally: Dieting and calorie cutting are not in themselves unhealthy.

The effects of calorie cutting and dieting on health:

If you have a healthy BMI than recommending diets or calorie restriction purely for weight loss so that you look "nice" in a dress (nice being defined by society) is a bit foolish as it could result in health problems. Recommending healthy eating habits, a focus on healthier foods and exercise, for over all better health is different then weight loss. I would never recommend weight loss to someone in a healthy BMI range, but I would recommend lifestyle changes for an overall healthier body.

But eating healthily and matching with activity is what should get you to your natural weight. Regardless of what weight you start off at. Daft juicing/ slim shake/ unbalanced atkins etc crap is a bad idea for anyone.

Thefitfatty · 17/05/2016 08:19

It should. But that weight doesn't always equal looking nice in a dress.

Basicbrown · 17/05/2016 08:29

No, but in many cases it does.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 17/05/2016 08:36

I think both sides get a slating. I always notice, generally in life, it's women's bodies who are generally the subject to comments and sneers and I think we are all our worst enemies.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/05/2016 22:09

Thefitfatty

That first link you give, which is from a magazine type website and doesn't look particularly authoritative confuses low calorie diet with a very low calorie diet. The negative side effects are from very low calorie diet. That's not what I mean by going on a diet.

The third link you gave is about America's Biggest Loser. Again, this is not a normal pattern of dieting, it's about people who lose large amounts of weight in little time.

It doesn't do to use extreme examples to demonise all slimming diets.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/05/2016 22:23

"Vanity: definition:

Yes, but the reality is that people do care about what they look like. Are you going to campaign to get the Style and Beauty topic deleted? That's full of 'vain' people after all. Will we still be allowed to weak makeup, brush our hair?

HelenaDove · 17/05/2016 23:00

Gwen when i lost 10 stone i lost the first seven stone in seven months .

This was not on a VLCD this was on Slimming World.

HelenaDove · 17/05/2016 23:04

More detail here.

When i lost 10 stone (before the 4 stone regain and subsequent loss) i developed gall bladder disease (now before anyone starts 2 doctors and my surgeon told me it was due to losing weight too fast. In fact they asked me Slimming World or Weight Watchers? The surgeon was very kind to me and when i made a private appointment to see him after being told i would have to live with frequent gallstone pain for another YEAR everytime i ate SOLID food not fatty food because id already lost the weight remember ....but SOLID food....the surgeon did however say to me that he wished he could use me as an example to his other patients who wouldnt believe him that heartburn is affected by weight.
Re. the gallstones he was appalled that i should have to wait a year after making all that effort .....

5 weeks later i was on his operating table under the NHS!

Before that operation i had spent months having intermittent attacks where i was rolling around on the floor or the bed in excrutiating pain every time i ate solid food. I was living on slim a soups and water biscuits and tinned salmon
while trying to hold down a ten hour a night job in a sex chatline office running from room to room answering different phones.

Every time i had a very severe attack i would have the emergency on call GP come out and give me a morphine injection. The neighbours actually said they could hear me screaming. On Xmas Eve 2002 the doc had to come out for the same reason... and on Xmas Day i couldnt stand up My legs kept giving way and i had to be taken to hospital where i was kept under observation until the morphine wore off.

A later attack came at work DH had to come and pick me up help me into the car and take me to a little local hospital where a camp and v. funny doctor who would have made me laugh if i hadnt been in so much pain gave me a box of morphine pills and told me to put one under my tongue when i felt an attack coming on.

Prior to the morphine injections i had been given tramadol which did fuck all to stop the pain and i got so desperate i was taking 2 of them an hour later 2 paracetamol then nurofen anything to stop the pain.

To this day i owe my thanks to the surgeon who did my op and the doc at the local hosp who gave me those pills.

I hope no one ever has to go through what i did

Gwenhwyfar · 17/05/2016 23:40

"due to losing weight too fast"

Exactly, not just losing weight. I know a couple of people who developed gall bladder issues after fast weight loss, both on Lighter Life actually, which I think is doctor-approved very low calorie. Both were obese to begin with, so don't fit what we're talking about - i.e. people in the healthy weight range who want to lose a few pounds sensibly.

I'm sorry you had gall bladder problems, but it's not a reason to say that nobody should ever lose weight.

HelenaDove · 17/05/2016 23:56

Gwen can you please show me where i said nobody should ever lose weight.

HelenaDove · 18/05/2016 00:00

I did try to lose weight sensibly In fact i tried to slow it down a bit but i would either stay the same or gain.

ive had a successful weight loss and the gallstones was over 13 years ago so im ok

Gwenhwyfar · 18/05/2016 09:16

"Gwen can you please show me where i said nobody should ever lose weight."

I didn't say that you did say that, but I thought that was the message of your post. There have definitely been some anti-dieting going on on this thread.

HelenaDove · 18/05/2016 13:05

Well we all know what thought did as my dad sometimes says.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/05/2016 01:05

Never heard that expression, but it shows that your post wasn't clear. What was the message of your post about gall bladders?
Also, like I explained, I was talking about other posts, not just yours.

HelenaDove · 19/05/2016 01:22

Gwen er ........no you didnt You said there was anti dieting going on in this thread. I am not responsible for the whole thread.

I posted about my experience to show that fast weight loss is not always down to a VLCD or Biggest Loser type shows.

Read your own posts back Gwen You are gaslighting. That doesnt really work where the written word is involved.

You have also said i have been rude on this thread when you are the one being aggressive. Anyway im done.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/05/2016 08:44

Gaslighting! Seriously! What an extreme thing to say. I'm doing nothing of the sort. I'm trying to have a clear discussion. I don't believe I'm being aggressive, just because I don't agree with you.

HelenaDove · 19/05/2016 16:24

Disagreements are no problem. But you arent doing just that. You clearly have issues around this subject.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/05/2016 08:44

I have issues? Gaslighting is quite a thing to insult someone on an Internet thread of doing. I don't think I'm the one with the issues. I don't think I've been rude to anyone either while others have been sarcastic and dismissive to me.

HelenaDove · 20/05/2016 13:58

Yeah Gwen Its the fault of some of the rest of us on the thread Hmm
