Babies in travel systems

Excusemeforpostinghere · 11/05/2016 08:03

Am I bu that I just get the rage when I see babies in carseats clunked to the pram?

Am I being a judgypants?

Fair enough on the nip in & out jobs like school run.

But supermarket? Theme park? National trust gardens? Running? Town? Zoo? Places were the child is likely going to have been in that carseat for a few hours!

They've already been in it for the car journey. I bet likely, some will only be out of them all day for feeding time.

I watched holiday supersavers last night and the baby did the walk to supermarket, around supermarket and walk nack home again in the flippin carseat!

I just want to go up to them and tell them to stop being lazy and think of their child's spine development.

Yabu and judgemental

Dizzybintess · 12/05/2016 18:43

I used to take my daughter shopping in one as I don't drive and it was easier to get a taxi and clip the car seat into the taxi after shopping. I could never use a sling as I dislocated my pelvis during childbirth and it took 9 months to fix so you never know the reasons why someone might use one. I used to use the flatbed pram when I knew I was only going for a really short walk but that was a handful of times.

Legendofthephoenix · 12/05/2016 18:43

What is a noob I ave to know.

Gugglebum · 12/05/2016 18:49

The best article I have read related to this topic is on boba.com titled Strollers, Baby Carriers and Infant Stress. Tried to link it but my phone is being dramatic and moody. It is a really informative read.

TheEagle · 12/05/2016 18:55

I'm not sure the people at Boba are the most impartial ...

I think "noob" is slang for "newbie"

Gugglebum · 12/05/2016 18:58

Thanks, Oyster! Wanted to add too, best not to decide other people's reasons for doing things. Do your best to inform yourself, make the best decisions you can for your own kids, leave others to do the same.

Gugglebum · 12/05/2016 19:05

TheEagle, that was my initial thought too. But it's quite well referenced, footnoted, etc. Regardless, not forcing anybody... Grin

Oysterbabe · 12/05/2016 19:24

So the lie flat prams and car seats the OP wants us all to use are no better for the spine than the car seats. Interesting.

SquinkiesRule · 12/05/2016 19:29

I think it's a load of hooey.
Mine and my friends babies all used the baby bucket, it clicked in and out of the car so easily, and we had wheels to click it onto. Babies weren't constantly getting woken up by getting put into the Pushchair.
I tried an old fashioned coach built pram for Ds1 he would scream bloody murder when I lay him flat and started to push. So we went straight to a reclining pushchair.
None of the kids I know have curved spine or back problems.

LilySnape · 12/05/2016 20:26

Ive seen to many stories of babies been suffocated or having there hips dislocated due to car seats to believe otherwise and just because it didn't happen to your kid or anyone you know doesn't mean its not dangerous if that was the case then we'd all be leaving kids unattended in the bath or leaving them in a room with a blind cord "because ive never had happen to be and neither has my mate down the street and were alright"Angry

LilySnape · 12/05/2016 20:29

Putting your kid in a cheap shitty seat or a 2nd hand one is the shittiest form of parenting IMO and considering all the actual professionals and doctor's agreeing with me I'll stick to what i know when i do have kids there going in an ERF seat from birth and staying there till there at least 5 and they won't be left in it more than 2hrs and will definitely never be coming out of the car

FutureGadgetsLab · 12/05/2016 20:31

Lily 2nd hand car seats are fine if you know the history of the seat.

What do you call a cheap shitty seat anyway? I find it funny the people passing judgements are the "when I have kids" crowd - you haven't got kids. You don't know what you'll do.

Pipe down.

glueandstick · 12/05/2016 20:33

So what about when they fall asleep in your arms on the sofa in the evening? How is that different?

I'll carry on using my car seat. It's not like I can go two hours without removing at least twice

FutureGadgetsLab · 12/05/2016 20:39

Again the biggest risk is not knowing the history of the seat.

The issue was the baby being left unsupervised, and from the last link I assume you think mamas and papas are shitty seats?

Really lily? You've heard of lots of babies dying in car seats? I have heard of that once, last year. I imagine it's INCREDIBLY rare. Rarer than cot death which is also very rare.

And dislocating hips? You know of this happening commonly? I've never heard of it before.

Are you a GP or pediatrican or
Someone who might see this more often than the average person?

LilySnape · 12/05/2016 20:44

cheap seats are
Nania
anything from Argos (who don't test any of their seats for saftey)
Babyweavers
Graco
Obaby (also proved dangerous by which)
Those obscure car seats you can buy on ebay with no name along with the travel systems (also proven dangerous)
"Tutti bambini" 0+ seat
basically anything that looks cheap is cheap its a case of using your eyes and reviewing crash tests before you buy it if it doesn't have a crash test report it isn't safe. and you really think your friend is going to tell you the truth about that car seat there trying to make money from rather than take it to thr tip like the law states Hmm if you don't believe me just ask on the actual car seat forum on here and they'll put you straight just like i have

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/05/2016 20:44

when i do have kids

Says it all, frankly. It's easy to be idealistic until you've been there.

I had a DD with horrendous silent reflux. She couldn't cope with lying flat at all when she was tiny. In the house she slept in a hammock mainly, out and about she would either be in a moby wrap or her car seat clipped on to the chassis. She was never in it for long period but until you've experienced the sleep deprived hell that is a refluxy newborn you have no idea. When they finally fall asleep and stop crying you don't wake them if you can avoid it because your nerves are shot from the constant screaming. You're especially not going to wake them when you've just arrived at the supermarket as the first thing they will do is start screaming and feeding them won't calm then down because it just causes pain.

Buckinbronco · 12/05/2016 20:45

Lily when you have kids you'll do better to spend more time worrying about the things that really matter rather than joining in with the car seat obsessed crew (although as someone who doesn't even have kids you're stunningly ahead of the game. Bet obsessive compulsive car seat forum love you)

glueandstick · 12/05/2016 20:45

Ahh the ideals of someone without kids. Bless.

FutureGadgetsLab · 12/05/2016 20:46

and you really think your friend is going to tell you the truth about that car seat there trying to make money from rather than take it to thr tip like the law states

I'm selling a car seat and I certainly am not lying about it. Just because you'd be a deceitful twat doesn't mean everyone else would.

glueandstick · 12/05/2016 20:47

Argos sell maxi cosi.

So is it safe if you buy it from somewhere that isn't Argos but unsafe if you do?!

Buckinbronco · 12/05/2016 20:47

It's not law that you have to tip a car seat when you've finished with it. You seriously think they make laws about that shit?

FutureGadgetsLab · 12/05/2016 20:47

It's easy to be idealistic until you've been there.

Some of the things I had said before I had DS. Blush
