To be annoyed DH knows nothing about female anatomy

DH, to whom I've been married for 15 years, and with whom I've had 3 children, was astonished yesterday when I pointed out that a vulva includes 2 holes. I had to show him a diagram.

Aibu to find this really annoying? I mean I had noticed I did all the childbearing work but he clearly didn't bother to look at a single book or website about pregnancy or even pay attention in all those birth classes. I am still cross.

My DH, with his First Class honours degree from Oxford, thought that once I had my fallopian tubes clipped that I wouldn't have any more periods.

JewryMember · 02/05/2016 01:07

I can't believe it either. Bonkers to think you pee out of the vagina. Urine is waste from the kidneys. Did you honestly think that the place where babies are made would also house piss?

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 02/05/2016 01:07

What used to really fascinate and perplex me as a kid was how you went from not weeing to weeing to not weeing.
There was soeculation (with aforementioned friend) that there must be somekind of lid or fliptop involved. Grin

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 01:08

And I would imagine that parents in the 70s/80s may not have been as forthcoming with information.

For example I never went into the toilet with my mother and yet it seems quite common, judging by posts on here!

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 02/05/2016 01:10

Did you honestly think that the place where babies are made would also house piss?

And yet the products of mens testes, their prostate and their bladders all comes out the same place....so it's not that bonkers is it? And you can breath or eat through your mouth.

The body is a truly amazing thing

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 01:10

Jewry I think the thread has moved on from faux shock at how stupid some of us are and is actually becoming quite constructive Smile

PerspicaciaTick · 02/05/2016 01:11

I've definitely talked about anatomy with both my DCs, but this thread has made me wonder if what I thought was clear, simple and age appropriate was actually not at all clear. So I will be double checking understanding.

LovelyLungtch · 02/05/2016 01:11

No Livia of course it's not hard to believe people feel things differently, I just hadn't worked out that that was the reason for the confusion for some - that two places can sort of feel like one. If that makes sense. I'm anxious to hear what Silver's DS can tell us about distances between the two holes. I'm not having much luck with Google.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 01:11

Am properly laughing at lid or flip top Grin

I remember portaloos used to have the bit that closed - I'm picturing that now Grin

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 01:13

Lovely You are googling something from MN? That is brave Grin

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 02/05/2016 01:16

Eventually we decided it must be a bit like the skin on custard and it popped off when you started weeing and you got another one
We were too wee to know about sphincters and valves etc or any of the other wonderful things your body does.

if only it had a fliptop now would be handy for sneezes

LovelyLungtch · 02/05/2016 01:17

I know. Nothing doing on distances between urethra and vagina so far. I think I'm going to have to look. Christ Blush. I'm going in.

Lovely Taking one for Team MN! Grin

Sproutieboolaa · 02/05/2016 01:19

There is a condition called obstetric fistula: a childbirth injury most common in very young mothers in places where there is little or no medical care around childbirth. It's when damage causes the tissue separating either the blade or rectum from the vagina to deteriorate. This means that urine or faeces leak continuously from the vagina, because it has no sphincter muscles. Fistula can be repaired, but where such treatment is unavailable these girls can become outcasts because they leak and smell Sad

God those poor girls Sproutie. I'm still looking for the tape measure, so far I can only find one I liberated from Homebase about 20 years ago, but it's metal and rather sharp. I'll keep looking.

LovelyLungtch · 02/05/2016 01:26

Just remembered the sewing box is in my eldest DS's room, he's on Xbox with his mates, this could get awkward, here goes ...

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 01:28

Poor Lovely - it is a far far better thing etc etc Grin

SilverBirchWithout · 02/05/2016 01:32

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urethra

This Wikipedia page is quite good with some useful diagrams and NO photos.
It clearly shows the urethra opening closer to the clitoris than the vagina. I was surprised by how short the urethra is in women, less than 2 inches.

LovelyLungtch · 02/05/2016 01:35

Right. Well that was, as I say, awkward. DS is teaching himself to sew, bless him. Anyway in the interest of hygiene I used my fingers to measure then measured them with the tape, if you see what I mean. Except I couldn't find it so had to wee on my own hand, it was plain sailing from then though. And I can say definitively, the distance between my urethra and my vagina is - 2cm. All I need now is for Silver's DS to confirm that I am completely and utterly normal. Please.

MattDillonsPants · 02/05/2016 01:36

Silver that's a good diagram. It shows the urethra is actually close to the vaginal opening doesn't it? Easy to see how things get confused.

MattDillonsPants · 02/05/2016 01:39

I have to say that my...ahem clitoral hood...is a bit less NEAT than this one. More enveloping

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 02/05/2016 01:39

See this is MN at its best Grin

That's really useful Silver

Lovely that's dedication to the cause of science Grin
