Have labour missed an opportunity for not voting Andy Burnham as leader

Not a corbyn hater I like him and think he is very principled in his ideology. However you see how Andy Burnham has conducted himself in the last week and challenged the Hillsborough enquiries and I can't help but think what if? He has showed that he is an excellent constituency MP, he's had experience as Secretary of State and I think he wouldn't be as divisive.

I could vote Labour with Corbyn. No chance with Burnham - I cannot forgive Burnham for ID cards.

Samcro · 29/04/2016 23:10

well the young people I know are all for JC
who wants another tory clone

GiddyOnZackHunt · 29/04/2016 23:16

Andy Burnham was too closely tied in with the later years of the last Labour govt and the failed team that fought the last election. Then he went and backed cuts which was the final straw.
He has done a very good thing to help the Hillsborough families though.

Follyfoot · 29/04/2016 23:27

Shame Andy Burnham only did something about Hillsborough after being very publicly heckled at the memorial service though. In his own words:

“The next day, we had a Cabinet meeting and I said to Gordon ‘I’m going to raise Hillsborough’. It wasn’t on the agenda and it wasn’t on the Government’s radar, and I asked him if he minded. He said ‘No, I don’t’. I said ‘I’m not saying this just because I had a bad time yesterday’.

He's got a touch of the 'Teflon Tony' about him, and seems to have escaped any sort of criticism for what he did with Hinchingbrooke Hospital (setting up the process for it to be run by a private company). My money's on him being the next PM.

Samcro · 29/04/2016 23:29

hopefully he wont be PM we need someone who doesn't think making the most vulnerable pay is the answer

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/04/2016 23:33

Meh. Burnham's had a good week that's all. I don't think Corbyn is particularly electable but I don't think Burnham would be a great alternative.

silkyviola · 29/04/2016 23:35

I like JC. I also like Burnham. Would support him as leader if JC wasn't around. Do wish spin doctors hadn't made him pluck his eyebrows though...

TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/04/2016 23:39

Didn't he abstain on the cuts? Wasn't that the labour line and he was pressured not to break ranks?

SilverBirchWithout · 29/04/2016 23:41

I think he's a bit of a light weight tbh. He didn't come over particularly well during the leadership elections, he was pretty disappointing. I don't think he has much substance.

MegCleary · 29/04/2016 23:41

Labour leader should be Alan Johnson.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/04/2016 23:43

I bloody love Alan Johnson. Wild horses couldn't persuade him though.

MsPavlichenko · 29/04/2016 23:49

The LP did have the opportunity to vote for him as leader He came (a very poor) second. Great work on Hillsborough none the less.

Samcro · 29/04/2016 23:50

oh yes I have always liked him

Samcro · 29/04/2016 23:50

alanjohnson that is

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 29/04/2016 23:54

I like Alan Johnson

I don't think he is right person to lead the party though

ThisCakeFilledIsle · 29/04/2016 23:55

Would it be possible for anyone to dislike Alan Johnson?

Turbinaria · 29/04/2016 23:59

Alan Johnson is too nice and decent to be PM you have to be a bit of a psychopath if that's your ultimate aim

SwedishEdith · 30/04/2016 00:01

Agree, and agree that he's been great re Hillsborough. Doesn't mean I think he should be leader though.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/04/2016 00:02

Yes he'd get chewed up. He's better off wearing his nice jumpers and appearing on This Week.

Follyfoot · 30/04/2016 00:06

As I said up thread, why did he only do anything about Hillsborough after being publicly embarrassed?

Very dodgy eyebrows too....

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 30/04/2016 00:07

Well I like Corbyn but I also like Burnham, but who's better. There's only one way to find out.
Fiiiiiiiiiiiiigggggggttttttt. Grin

SarahVineTory · 30/04/2016 00:08

I think Lisa Nandy is a potential next leader.

nebulae · 30/04/2016 00:18

Andy Burnham is my MP. He may have conducted himself well over the issue in question but he has shat on many of his constituents from a great height regarding a local issue. Broken promises. The man is a weasel. Someone upthread said "cowardly careerist"...yep...about sums him up.

MegCleary · 30/04/2016 00:32

I do agree that Mr Johnson won't do it and is too nice to do it.
