To be shocked at Dd's friend's tampon experience

DD is ten and her class just had the period chat at school. One little girl, whose mum is a GP, was shown how to insert a tampon. Her mother demonstrated on herself by lying on her bed while her 10 year old DD watched. Shock

Furious

My mum died very young from toxic shock and I was rushed in at 14.
I didn't know about my mum until long after the event. It's complicated so can't tell the full story.
I haven't told dd this yet, but will have to if she decides to use them.
She is 12 and started at 9, we have discussed everything else but i don't want to scare the poor love.

I wish someone would have shown me - I thought you had to point them at your crotch and pull the string, like a party popper, for years Confused

MattDillonsPants · 29/04/2016 02:14

I used to think tampon was pronounced tampoon.

I like that lentil and matt's post followed on so well. I have this mental picture now...

MattDillonsPants · 29/04/2016 03:46

Grin Fanjo Poppers!

Milzilla · 29/04/2016 05:33

Lentil and Matt LOL 😂

Milzilla · 29/04/2016 05:34

Ps am so glad my mum didn't demo this for me - even a mental image of it is making my toes curl!

Narp · 29/04/2016 06:13

I don't think a demonstration would be of that much help - the girl can't see what's going on inside. You can only get it right by feeling

Lots of detailed verbal instruction would be better

Narp · 29/04/2016 06:14

I am also not sure I believe this

It may be the girl was only partly telling the truth

Narp · 29/04/2016 06:19

If it's true I also don't think it's OK. Inviting your child to see your sexual organs is crossing a boundary.

It's perfectly possible to be open and convey a lack of disgust about fe=male bodies without doing this

Nor is it necessary

And also, how many people insert tampons lying on a bed during the course of the day?

Helloandgoodbye · 29/04/2016 06:19

If I saw my mum do that I would not think it was 'quite cool' I would be scarred for life. As far as I'm concerned my mum does not have sex, periods or probably even a vagina I'm almost 100% sure my dad does not have a penis too. Just no.

hairymelonwalton · 29/04/2016 06:25

i dont understand why she had to demonstrate it. surely she could of taken it out the packet show her how to use the applicator, tell her that the string hangs out of you ready for when you take the tampon out and to change it regular.
the rest she ll by experience, go to the toilet fiddle downstairs insert tampon job done i mean theres not that many holes down there she aint playing golf

disclaimer : i grew up without a mother and have no dd so make be im talking bollox

SandyAndy · 29/04/2016 06:36

I used tampons from aged 11 but had an awful moment when I couldn't remember if I'd removed one. Had to go to the doctors so they could take a lookBlush then my DM decided she needed to tell my male teacherBlushBlush To this day I remember the acute embarrassment. Slightly missing point of thread but girls as young as 10/11 don't necessarily have the maturity or life skills to use tampons.

Narp · 29/04/2016 06:38

hairymelon

'she ain't playing golf'

Katnisnevergreen · 29/04/2016 07:13

I can't believe that people find tampons hard...I used them almost straight away from about 12 and never needed Vaseline, a demonstration, instructions or to stand up with my leg on the loo. Surely you just sit there and push??
I would have run a mile if my mother tried to show me that.

I showed my DD when she was 13 how to do it. My next door neighbour demonstrated for me in 1975.

My mum told me I wasn't allowed tampons, she said they were for adults so I was only allowed pads.

I saw her fanjo a lot, when she got out of the bath and such. But would I have liked to have seen her shoving a tampon in it? Not so much.

SoupDragon · 29/04/2016 07:28

I don't see a problem with this. Having said that it's not something I would do, I would be too embarrassed!

I imagine that they have a very open relationship with regard to bodies and odiously functions. It is unlikely to have come completely out of nowhere and I doubt that the daughter was forced to watch - she was probably curious and asked.

SoupDragon · 29/04/2016 07:28

bodily functions FFS.

GreatFuckability · 29/04/2016 07:31

can't say i can get upset about it personally.

Katnis I've never been able to use them comfortably really. My period is either so heavy and painful the thought of putting anything near my hoohaa makes me want to cry, or its so light its really dry and hurts. there is no in between. so i dont bother.

MyBreadIsEggy · 29/04/2016 07:34

Surely that's what the leaflet in the packet is for?! There are clear instructions and diagrams....and if the girl has questions then mum can answer. No need for full on demonstration Confused
Do agree with previous posters when they say that mum and DD obviously have a very open and trusting relationship - which in itself is great

Fourarmsv2 · 29/04/2016 07:38

My cousin told me her mum (nurse) did the first one for her.

My first was a tampax which was horribly uncomfortable - non-app are much better for me. I wish it had been a more open subject at home.
