To be shocked at Dd's friend's tampon experience

DD is ten and her class just had the period chat at school. One little girl, whose mum is a GP, was shown how to insert a tampon. Her mother demonstrated on herself by lying on her bed while her 10 year old DD watched. Shock

Well done on the Mum for not making a big deal about it and letting her see what happens without an issue.

Trunkadunk · 28/04/2016 22:10

Which bit shocks you? My kids have already seen me insert tampons/mooncups. Vaginas are only sexual if you're having sex. Otherwise it's just a body part. A body part she already previously squeezed out of!

RunswickBay · 28/04/2016 22:10

I think it's fine. Not sure I'd do it but it's fine. Don't understand all the ewws

NewLife4Me · 28/04/2016 22:11

We need some of the dm nc on here.

SalemSaberhagen · 28/04/2016 22:11

Why do people find it weird and disgusting? Genuine question, I don't get it.

whois · 28/04/2016 22:12

My mum showed me the theory and how to put one foot up on the toilet seat so it was easier to insert. Quite helpful really.

EdithBouvierBeale · 28/04/2016 22:12

The little girl, if she is telling the truth, told all the girls in her class that it was disgusting.

holiest of holeys!! Grin

I stood outside the loo and encouraged dd first time she inserted tampon. She was 12, if I recall.

IAmAPaleontologist · 28/04/2016 22:13

My kids are 9, 7 and 4 and we are walk around naked sort of house and the kids are always in and out of the bathroom while I'm on the loo or in the shower so have all seen menstrual blood, seen me changing pads or putting my cup in and just see it as a normal bodily function. I think it is pretty cool that her mum showed her like.

MarthaCliffYouCunt · 28/04/2016 22:13

I grew up in a house where it was normal for my mum to change her tampon while i was in the bath/brushing my teeth etc. I never remember being "shown" how to do it but it was just a non-event in our house. Mum is a midwife so not squeamish about vaginas. I am assuming the lying down was so her DD could see properly what she needed to do. Its no big deal IMO.

SuckingEggs · 28/04/2016 22:14

I don't think it's disgusting. I just wouldn't want to see my mum's fanjo.

But, you know what, it's a generational thing and I'm far more open about stuff than my mum was with me, and I'm massively pleased about that, as it could have saved me from certain situations!

MistressMerryWeather · 28/04/2016 22:14

Gosh, I'de hate to be there when she's having the sex talk.

I'm joking, I'm joking

Personally, I'd lay reasonable odds on the story not being true.

Vixxfacee · 28/04/2016 22:18

I think theveryone comment after about the gynaecologist dad showing his daughter howas to put a tampon in is slightly more shocking.

FuriousFate · 28/04/2016 22:18

Sounds pretty sensible to me. Also not getting the idea that girls can be too young for tampons. Why is that Newlife? They're a perfectly valid choice when it comes to sanitary protection.

My mother hated the idea of tampons but I couldn't get on with towels. I begged her for tampons to try, when she got them they were given to me in a very hush hush fashion and told to read the instructions.

Not saying I would have loved a real life demo...but a bit of instruction or help would have been good.

Trunkadunk · 28/04/2016 22:21

Of course she said it was disgusting. Kids are disgusted by their parents. She'l know how to put in a tampon though!

WellThisIsAwful · 28/04/2016 22:22

Shock I suppose it seems not as weird to her because she's a medical professional.
I remember being mortified at my mum just telling me know to use them. I was like I know what to do it's obvious leave me alone. She also made me dip them in water and have a tug-of-war to demonstrate how strong the strings were.

I think it'd be quite a good idea (now I think about it, which I haven't before!) to show a dd a diagram of lady bits and give her a mirror to have a look in private so she knows what she's aiming for and perhaps then insert one in front of her in a more 'normal' position- with one leg up on the toilet seat or whatever so she couldn't really see anything but gets the gist of how to best insert one.
But the thought of watching my mum insert a tampon with her legs akimbo and her bumhole winking at me makes me feel traumatised. Surely there's no need for that!
