To think that junior doctors shouldn't strike

They're fucking PROFFESSIONALS, and they are endangering people's health because they want a fucking PAY RISE!! Am I unreasonable to think that if they respected people's health more, then people would respect THEM more and maybe pay them more!! I mean, no emergency cover? What are you supposed to do if you have an appt booked for that day? Wait another six weeks?? I think the junior doctors really need to buck their ideas up....

Oooh, do tell, twowrongs. Educate us all on how you know better than all of us who have read the contract and been campaigning on this for months and months and years. Junior doctors have not asked for a pay rise and the BMA did come up with a cost-neutral solution that was vetoed by Jeremy Hunt months ago.

Twowrongs it's absolutely about pay... Partly. But the potential of a pay cut is one of the reasons I need to worry, not why the public should care. What's it to you if I get paid less? The public need to be worried about the change in working hours taking staff away from current core hours to service the elective ooh work that has no multidisciplinary backup (make no mistake, they're coming for allied health professionals next), the extension to pre existing working hours and removal of safeguards, the failure to recruit into the specialties who need it (a&e is already grossly under filled), the loss of the best to other countries and the shafting of women who take time off to have children. I'm lucky enough to work in a part of the country that hasn't agreed to impose the contract but I'd be striking if I did.

At least get your facts right (and use a dictionary) before you go off on a rant, OP.

Nobody's life is being endangered. It might well be if Mr Hunt gets his way, though.

Allied,professionals and nursing staff have already been got at, and the doctors were nowhere near !

I didn't support public sector strikes or teacher strikes, I am vehemently against train driver and tube driver strikes.

But I support the junior doctors.

Unlike other professions, they ensure cover is provided, either by themselves still giving emergency cover or by consultants etc. Other professions try to cause as much disruption to the public as possible, doctors are minimising it.

It's not about a pay rise. It's about politicians promising something (7 day nhs) and not consulting with the people who provide it and making it harder for them to do the job they've spent years and years training to do.

Is this a joke? Are you a journalist? I don't know a single person who doesn't support the Drs. When was the last time that you heard of medical professional strikingly? Years and years. They don't want to strike because they take they're role seriously and don't want the NHS to be dismantled in the way that appears to be happening. They're completely awesome in my opinion and they have,y full support.

I fully support the strike. The doctors are striking against a pay rise- they'd rather not have a pay rise and instead have a fairer contract that doesn't endanger people or unfairly discriminate against women.

Senior doctors are supporting the strike by providing cover for essential services. Routine services are being delayed (like my scan) which is a shame for me but not life threatening.

I work in nicu. Today, until 5pm the whole unit was manned by consultants. The patients had very good care today!
The consultants were happy to support the Dr's and there was a nice atmosphere. we were all working together for the greater good

It's nothing to do with a pay rise. They are protesting against being asked to do stupidly unsafe and even longer hours for LESS money.

Just wanted to add my (private sector, non healthcare professional) voice in support of the junior doctors and the strike... I don't think they went into this lightly at all and support them all the way. I agree with people who suspect that the current government is trying to privatise the NHS and this needs to be fought...how will adding a layer of mouths to feed (shareholders and insurance companies) improve the service? Doesn't make sense.

If lots of our junior doctors go abroad as a result of this stupid new contract, and we end up poaching doctors from developing countries to keep the NHS afloat, I expect the OP will be lining up to protest about immigration next.

The junior doctors have valid concerns. They have a right to withdraw their labour. Consultants were available to provide emergency care.

Apparently people were staying away from A&E departments during the strike - obviously not suffering from an accident OR an emergency then...
