To think that junior doctors shouldn't strike

They're fucking PROFFESSIONALS, and they are endangering people's health because they want a fucking PAY RISE!! Am I unreasonable to think that if they respected people's health more, then people would respect THEM more and maybe pay them more!! I mean, no emergency cover? What are you supposed to do if you have an appt booked for that day? Wait another six weeks?? I think the junior doctors really need to buck their ideas up....

Leave it here. The PBP has all made (very incorrect) points that (very few, thankfully) others have made, which have been corrected and it is great to see the support from lots of people here, so it actually makes for a rather nice thread in the end!

Please leave the thread, it's cheering me up to see this level of support for public sector workers.

OP a Junior Doctor is paid the same wage as a bloke who works at the local Nissan Factory. His job is to stick parts on the door of the Quashqai.

I know which one I think deserves a raise.

MN HQ I love this thread. It's a perfect example of how the government is selling this vs what is actually happening. Striking is an extreme thing for doctors to do. I am a Jr Dr and I worried it might lose us public support in the face of Tory spin. The Mumsnetters who have replied have cheered me up no end.

There is another thread that details exactly what junior doctors are paid. But I don't know how to do links.

Remember junior doctors become consultants who have the potential to earn a lot, even just working for the NHS.

I thought that EU law restricted working hours. Will this new contract override the working time regulations or am I just talking total bullshit?

I don't understand much at all about this strike and a lot of what I have read is contradictory. Is it the case that the junior doctors have been offered a pay rise, but because they won't get as much in overtime payments at the weekend, it will actually equate to a cut in pay? They're paid low very low wages as juniors so I can understand their discontent, especially with the long and difficult working hours. But at least after a few years, their salary rises substantially and they will get a good pension. The same can't be said for the nurses and carers who will always earn poor pay for a back breaking job. However, doctors should not be expected to work long hours, it just wouldn't be in anyone's best interests.

The biggest problem is that we haven't trained enough doctors over the years and we should have seen this crisis coming. There are lots of extremely bright students who would love to study medicine, but places are like gold dust. I don't think it's right that a doctor's whose costly training is funded by the taxpayer should be able to leave the country to work overseas without repaying some of their training costs (they should give a few years service first). Equally, I don't think it's right that we are poaching doctors from overseas either.

I was thinking about this yesterday whilst reading Hunts "if anyone dies it's all their fault" bollocks and I really can't understand how anyone of a sound mind could believe the rubbish the govt are coming out with. Seriously, it's all so obviously clear what the doctors are fighting for and how wrong the govt are being.

Between a well rested, well paid doctor and an underpaid, overworked one, I know who I'd prefer treating me!

Why would you even express an opinion when you've literally no idea what this strike is about? It has nothing to do with a pay rise.

You're probably one of those oh so clever people who says that if teachers can fine parents for going on holiday, you're going to issue fines when teachers go on strike. Hmm
