AIBU?

Or is the petrol station owner?

About four weeks ago I called in to my local PS to put some petrol in my car, I rarely use this PS as it's very expensive. I normally fill up at my local Asda.

I bought £10 worth of petrol - just to see me through till I could get to my normal filling up place. I also bought a packet of crisps.

Came up to £10.39, I paid on my card.

The following day I went in to asda and half filled the tank up.

My Dh used the car and didn't bother to replace the petrol so one week later when I got in the car it was basically running off fumes so I called in local PS and put another £10 in. When I went in to the PS shop the owner went in to the back and came out with a receipt of my last transaction. He said that last time I was in the card machine was broke for one hour and did not register the petrol amount/cost and I only paid for the crisps. The recept he had shown 0.39p he was quite relaxed and said he was just showing me. I offered to pay it back. I only had £10 note on me so said I will Bob in soon and pay it. He never once asked for it. Seemed relaxed about it.

Went home checked my online banking - yep the 39p from the PS was there.

I totally forgot to go to the PS the next day or for the rest of the week. It's not in the direction I normally go and I'd been asda and put petrol in so I didn't need to go local PS.

Anyway - today I went in as me and Dh have been sharing again and not replaced so had to call in local PS to put a little in just to get me out of the village. When I went to the pump it wasn't working. I went in to the PS shop and Bobbed my head in and said ' is the pump not working?'

The owner said 'I turned it off as you owe me £10'

I said ' oh god yes, I'll pay it now'
He said ' yes but you let me down. You said you would pay next day' (I never)

I said ' Ok, I forgot, but will pay now'

He carried on saying "yes but let me down, where was my money'

I said " hang on, I tried paying buy your machine was broke, I never stole it, like I said I'll pay now'

He said ' but you let me down, you said you would pay ...

At which point I walked out of the shop.

There were people in the shop and I felt he was trying to act as if I had purposely stole petrol or tried to get out of paying.

Not sure what to do know tbh.

Should I expect the police to come? Blush

I think it's you who is BU here. As soon as I found out I owed someone money, I'd make every effort to jay then immediately, and think it was rude of you not to. If you only had a tenner on you, why not put it on card.
I think it's also bizarre to say he wasn't asking you die the money you owed him, but was just pointing out that the transaction hadn't gone through properly and that you were the one who offered to pay?? He pointed out that you owed him money -admittedly through no fault of your own at that point - surely you don't see that as a friendly snippet of information. It's pointing out you owe him money and should pay him back!

Yes, I'm reading the right thread and I think anyone who accepts money being taken off their card without checking the receipt is a f*ing idiot!

But it's true you couldn't afford to pay the first time he told you about it. That's why you promised to come back and pay later. confused

I don't get your point. I didn't buy petrol then find out I didn't have enough money. I bought petrol the first time and paid for it (as far as I was aware)

The second time, I had a £10 note. Went to PS put in £10 worth and went in shop. The owner told me about the week before. (Which wasn't my fault) I only had £10 on me for the petrol that I had just bought and he accepted that. I offerd to go back in soon. He said he was just showing me

I forgot to go in.

I went in today and tried to pay three times. He just wanted to embarrass me

I'm very surprised at all these answers..

Why on earth would the police be called? She paid, they put the wrong amount in the machine (this must be it - why would it only charge 39p of 10.39) - ie. it was his mistake, which you offered to rectify (at your expense I might add - however small, it is out of your way, and will cost you money), even though you weren't actually under any legal obligation to do so, then when you went to rectify it (albeit not as quickly as he would have liked, but again, you were doing this to be nice, not because you had to), he was snarky and downright rude about it.

Sod that. I would let him whistle for it (it was his mistake, not yours), and now he's lost business as you won't be going back.

Puppy I was also once charged £778 pounds for a meal which was £78. Must something about the number 7!

We were on holiday in France and we only decided at the last minute to go back to that restaurant on the last night. As I walked in 2 waiters came running over, gesticulating at me to get my purse out. I thought I'd done something wrong, then someone who could speak English came and explained. I was very grateful for their honesty.

Exactly - you couldn't afford to pay him what you owed him for petrol, only what you had just put in your tank, which was not all you owed him for...

Cloud yes, but you walked out without paying. Go get a tenner out, walk in and place it in the desk. Job done.

Goodness me I can't believe how 'holier than thou' people are being. You forgot about the £10 on the last occasion you went to the garage. Doesn't anyone else ever forget anything??? Yanbu he was rude. I'm sure if he had allowed you to fill up then reminded you of the 10 when you went in to pay you would have done. He set out to humiliate you and that's not on. I can understand why you walked away from the embarrassing situation he put you in. Fight or flight can be a strong impulse, under stress without thinking it through you flew. As others have said; pay it when next convenient but don't cut off your nose to spite your face. You might need petrol there in future.

His reaction was completely over the top and weird and I don't blame you for being annoyed. But I think you'll have to go back and pay as it may cause you more trouble in the end if you don't. Possibly he might call the police. (Not sure of the legal ins and outs, as the problem was caused by his machine). And also it would be inconvenient for you to not have the option of using this PS again in an emergency.

Just keep repeating yourself loudly as pps suggest, and talk over him if he starts ranting again! Make sure you get a receipt.

You did say you would pay him back, you didn't but went back again for more petrol, he probably thought you were a chancer.

Even if you had given him the tenner and said I'm just going to fill up now, it might have helped.

Cloud am I right in thinking 3 weeks passed between your penultimate visit, when you said you would pop in and pay, and today's visit? And that you had forgotten all about it?

In our area the petrol stations share number plates of non payers. Some of them have the number plates stuck over the counters. The pump won't switch on if it recognises your car as one of those. That's even the supermarkets. You might struggle to get any petrol locally.

Excuse us for not being psychic. To me, this just means "I only had £10 in cash". It doesn't automatically mean to me that you didn't have your purse/cards on you. Maybe you could, you know, have just clarified that tiny point Hmm

What would the twat have done if you'd never gone back in?

I do get that the Op owes £10 for petrol, but it's not her fault, in that she went into the shop afterwards, handed over a method of payment & was charged 39p.

At that point does the transaction end or could Op be pursued for the £10?

I don't see why Op should be breaking her nek to pay.

Those three times in the shop count as one time. One conversation.

Just stop by with £10 and a crappy box of biscuits. Don't get drawn into anything. Whatever he says to you, it doesn't physically prevent you from putting the £10 you owe him on the counter.

I work in a petrol station. Legally, you have done nothing wrong as you attempted to pay. The law states that the PS can't ask you for the money as the intent was there when you went to pay the first time. YANBU and he was rude

I suspect he wanted to hear the magic word, not just be given the cash to shut him up. Grin I suspect he also doesn't make much money out of the petrol station, works long hours, doesn't appreciate the extra hassle of payments going awol, thought you had abused his gentle approach the first time round, had started to think you may be a chancer, was having a bad day, and resents you only putting £10 in at his PS when your dh has been a lazy sod, particularly when he doesn't even get the £10! Maybe you were unlucky with your timing and got him after a bad day with the accountant, or you weren't the first person who had "forgotten" something, so you were the one who ended up getting it in the neck.... He certainly shouldn't have behaved as he did, but I think you would have pissed me off, tbh,me cause I'm not the sort of person who forgets my debts!

Really, what it comes down to is - do you want to use his petrol station again? The price of admittance is £10...

If you can get by without using it, then do so.
