Cutlery argument - tell me who's right?

The order of cutlery in the cutlery drawer. Should it go

A. Forks, knives, spoons

or

B. Knives, Forks, Spoons

Things have come to a head today after months of us both stealthily swapping them to the correct way, depending on who's unloading the dishwasher. I said I'd ask Mumsnet and whatever you say will be the way in future (even if it is the wrong way).

Chez nous it' s spoons, forks, knives, but I think forks, knives, spoons is acceptable. As long as the forks are to the left of the knives, it's ok with me.

RedOnHerHedd · 23/04/2016 18:50

That one rogue knife in my pic is making me twitch. I just need to let all the OCDs know that it is actually now the right way round.

FurbysMakeSexNoises · 23/04/2016 19:07

A

TakeItFromMe · 23/04/2016 20:40

Well this thread has been an eye opener.

I really should have asked 'is it forks then knives, or vice versa ' - I'm not fussed what the spoons are up to as long as they're either side.

I like the logic of the PP who said forks can bed down with either knives or spoons so belong in the middle, so I'll try to change my way of thinking.

On a sidenote, my cutlery has to be as random as possible in the dishwasher because I worry if all the spoons are together they will start tessellating and not be cleaned properly. I go to great pains to make sure there's no two things the same in a segment. I know this is ridiculous.

A!!!

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 23/04/2016 20:48

Knives, forks, spoons.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/04/2016 21:26

I never knew there was a 'right' order. I don't think there ever has been. What does it matter, as long as they're not mixed up?

I thought the ? was going to be about how to lay a place setting of several courses.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 23/04/2016 21:31

I do Spoons, Forks, Knives.
I agree that as long as the forks and knives are in the right place it doesn't really matter.

WhoTF puts knives then forks?! You'd have to take them out then cross them over to lay the table

EllaHen · 23/04/2016 21:43

We do B.

thatstoast · 23/04/2016 21:45

What are people talking about when they say you use knives first so that's why they're on the left? That makes no sense to me.

It's A as forks are on the left of the table setting.

SimonLeBonOnAndOn · 23/04/2016 21:50

Knives
Forks
Spoons
Teaspoons

BatmanLovesMarmite · 23/04/2016 21:53

B.

Glad that rogue knife in the picture was sorted - made me twitchy Grin

abigamarone · 23/04/2016 21:58

From left to right it's fork, spoon, knife. Anything else is wrong. I noticed my brother had it the wrong way so I kindly corrected it for him. (he hasn't noticed)

maz210 · 23/04/2016 22:00

Spoon, fork, knife in this house.

The teaspoon section is underneath and I have to have the head facing right, so underneath the knife section. It really fucks my day up if my husband puts the teaspoons round the wrong way. Not that I'm difficult to live with, or anything.

TutanKaDashian · 23/04/2016 22:16

Spoon, knife fork.

Rebel.

FifiRebel · 23/04/2016 22:19

A is logical to me but my cutlery drawer tray will only let me fit B - perhaps because that is the 'correct' way?!

Crumblevision · 23/04/2016 22:19

A in our house

notamummy10 · 23/04/2016 22:19

Mine is spoons, forks and knives...

theendoftheshowshow · 23/04/2016 22:22

We have fork, spoon, knife ... I fear that maybe upsetting for some of you Grin

Primaryteach87 · 23/04/2016 22:27

Neither! Fork, spoon, knife

FoggyMorn · 23/04/2016 22:28

L to R, spoon, fork, knife.

ExitPursuedByABear · 23/04/2016 22:30

Yeah. The first thread I ever posted on on MN was on this very subject. Many years ago.

And it's B.

teenmumandsowhat · 23/04/2016 22:34

We have (left to right)
Fork, spoon, knife. And then teaspoons and cake forks underneath.

IonaMumsnet · 23/04/2016 22:36

Bucking the trend here, but: forks, dessert spoons, teaspoons (left to right) then knives tucked away at right angles at the back to prevent children from certain death. In our cutlery set, for no apparent reason, the knives look like machetes and are sharper than Miss Marple. V useful for eating steak. V dangerous for buttering toast. It's a miracle I'm still here at all really.
