To ask what you think is a reasonable price to pay for a bed?

DM and DF have just ordered a new bed which cost £6000 I was rather shocked as I'd be hard pressed to spend that on a car
They offered me their old mattress which is still in ok condition I looked it up to see if it was suitable for use on my pine frame bed and sadly it's not - however that was £1500 at current price
This isn't about what they spend their money on that is up to them (although they are not that well off) but about is it really worth it?
I sleep ok on a memory foam mattress which cost me around £200 at the time and would still cost me less than £300 if I needed to replace it in the near future

I think it depends on if there are medical needs involved.

My Nan paid 4K for her bed but she has to have a certain degree of support and it's one of those mechanically adjusting ones etc. I don't have that sort of budget, we spent 150 on the frame and about 250 on the mattress.

My mum spends about 1k just on her mattress but she has specific health issues so needs support etc.

The recommendation is buy the most expensive one you can afford

I wouldn't spend that (I don't have it). But you spend WAY more time in bed than you do in a car (Especially as two people share it). And sleep is soooo important for your physical and mental wellbeing, and back-health etc (especially if they're older). So in my opinion you get the most expensive one you can afford.

My DP spent about £5000 for each single bed but they're obsessive about sleep. The beds are VERY comfy. Much more than mine. I do think that you get what you pay for with beds though.

We just bought a new bed 1k in total and I thought we had spent a lot but 6k ? That's a lot of money for a bed.

We spent £1.3k on ours (and that was heavily discounted). We're very different sizes and were struggling to sleep together comfortably on our old bed. We now have a zip lock superking and I can honestly say I'd pay to replace it every 2-3yrs if necessary. We've never slept better and it has stopped me getting a bad back.

6ish years ago our bed cost just a bit more than yours OP. DH's back is broken blah blah and it's a miracle-working Hypnos, made extra long as he's extra long. If you can afford it and you're happy then that's all that matters.

Spent £900 on my solid walnut king size with latex matress (very, very hard) from an outlet centre near us. My mum always said 'two things not to scrimp on. Mattresses and saucepans' so I always wondered if I should spend more.

Why isn't the mattress suitable on your bed frame? Thought all mattresses were suitable for any bed?

We got ours from a furniture warehouse specialising in end of lines and paid £500 for mattress and bed. Bed alone would have been £600 if bought from the proper shop

Why do people always have to judge other people's spending?? If they have the money let them spend what they want, I spent 2k on my mattress, it's amazing and worth every penny.

£6k is a lot of money but then lots of people quite happily spend that on a holiday, which I (personally) think is excessive.

We spent about 2.5k ish in our last bed and it is fabulous I never sleep as well away from home.

My pillow cost £100 all by itself (I'd fight anyone that wanted to take my lovely pillow from me.)

Assuming your DPs can afford it, it seems a fairly sensible thing to spend money on to me, especially in your later years when many people don't sleep well or have joint pain.

I bet a 6k bed is fantastic.

If they can afford it, why not? You spend 1/3 of your life in bed so hardly a waste if they appreciate the difference.

Our king-sized bedframe is from Ikea and cost £60. We bought a £400 mattress from there too. The bedframe has needed a little tightening once in the seven years we have had it. The mattress is ever so slightly dipping on dh's side but it came with a 25 year guarantee so at some point this year I will call Ikea and they will replace it.

If I could afford it I would.

With beds I do believe you get what you pay for.

I spent £199 on a value bed frame from John Lewis and got a half price mattress in our local bed shop for £99

2 years in and it'd fabulous

I think it's silly to spend big money on a bed frame, but would happily pay up to £1000 for a mattress. By comparison, the car cost £800

We're both relatively high earners, so still not willing to spend that much relative to income.

Oh, dh and I are looking into buying a new bed. We saw one we liked for a thousand pounds, but I am umming and ahhing.

I paid £750 for the bed frame and £380 for the mattress but I get interrupted sleep all night as I'm a carer and I wanted a nice bed so I had quality sleep. I don't think you can bear a comfortable bed tbh so I imagine everyone will buy one that is within their means iykwim

I paid £2000.

We paid £950 for our mattress recently and its great. I couldn't afford to spend £6000 but if they can and it benefits them then that's their decision.

As asked by a PP why can't you use their old one?

It's hand made wool and horsehair hand tufted pocket sprung etc it is also made to measure and has different support on each side bespoke to their body weight and height (apparently)
They are older and do have health problems
