To ask what you think is a reasonable price to pay for a bed?

DM and DF have just ordered a new bed which cost £6000 I was rather shocked as I'd be hard pressed to spend that on a car
They offered me their old mattress which is still in ok condition I looked it up to see if it was suitable for use on my pine frame bed and sadly it's not - however that was £1500 at current price
This isn't about what they spend their money on that is up to them (although they are not that well off) but about is it really worth it?
I sleep ok on a memory foam mattress which cost me around £200 at the time and would still cost me less than £300 if I needed to replace it in the near future

This is our new bed. We went for the kingsize and a medium firm mattress which I think is a 4.

The best thing is, its due to be delivered the day before DH goes away on a stag weekend so I get it all to myself Grin.

We spent about £4000 on our last bed. After 30 years of marriage it was our first expensive luxury bed and the money was very well spent. It is the most comfortable thing on earth and my tired old bones very much appreciate it!

AvaLeStrange · 19/04/2016 08:05

Smile bluesky that was very much our logic too.

We're in our forties now - I don't sleep that well anyway and am waking up with aches and pains every morning now. End of June can't come fast enough for me!

Artandco · 19/04/2016 08:15

About £5000. It's a superking, with loads of springs (7000 I think), and all natural materials ( wool and organic cotton)

The matress was a most expensive part. Bed probably only around £1000 from that and matress for times the price. In store that was mid range roughly, although some mattresses were £12,000+ alone

It's the best money we have spent. Both our children slept in it also the first 3+ years so no cots etc bought. Like others say, you spend about 1/3 of your life in it so should be good

In comparison we had an ikea one before that came with the flat. It was terrible and Dh and I constantly had back ache in the morning for two years we used it. Went first night in good bed

pinkerpeony · 19/04/2016 08:20

We've got a ViSrung mattress, I can't remember the cost but it was expensive.
It's super King with a different firmness on either side.
I hate sleeping anywhere else and working out cost per use I think it's good value.
We have a cheap car too, I'd rather spend the money on a bed.
Horses for courses.

JessieMcJessie · 19/04/2016 08:26

We just bought an Eve mattress, 600 quid for the king size. It's great so far but we have up to 100 nights to change our minds and get a refund no questions asked.

Can I ask why people still buy divans? They look really ugly to me when there are so many lovely bed frames around.

Salene · 19/04/2016 08:27

We paid £3500 for a fully multi media bed and love it and another £2000 for the mattress.

It was worth every penny.

WildwestWind · 19/04/2016 08:39

We spent about £1,500 two years ago. I think you should spend as much as you can afford on beds and shoes as you are either one or the other.

WildwestWind · 19/04/2016 09:08

Percy, I think your nana and my grandma had the same idea Smile

HeadDreamer · 19/04/2016 09:11

I just go to ikea and buy a cheap one. But if they can afford it, it keeps the economy going surely?

ImogenTubbs · 19/04/2016 09:46

We spent £1k on our super King and we bloody love it! Salene - what does your multimedia bed do?

Alexa444 · 19/04/2016 09:52

I paid about £1200 for mine as I need a certain level of support for orthopaedic problems. Generally I think buy the best you can afford. I don't remember who said it but someone said you should always buy a good bed and good shoes because if you're not in one, you're in the other.

CalonGoch · 19/04/2016 09:55

jessiemcjessie Divans don't squeak. Wink Plus they're a useful space to store bedlinen and spare blankets if you don't have much storage room.

JessieMcJessie · 19/04/2016 13:33

Calon my wooden bed doesn't squeak and has underbed storage drawers.

megletthesecond · 19/04/2016 13:40

back me too. Whatever is on officer in argos here.

What I would like is a whizzy king size that sits me up in the morning. My blood pressure is so low I have to set my alarm early so I have time to gradually prop pillows up behind me before I can get out of bed.

Naoko · 19/04/2016 14:16

Ours cost £189 for bed and mattress nearly a decade ago. It's very definitely at the end of its useful life, by which I mean it's doing my back in and I hate it. Will probably replace it this summer. I won't be spending 6k on it though. It's a moot point because I don't have 6k, but I don't think I would even if I could afford to. I just can't see you'd get that much improvement over a cheaper but still high quality bed, which could be had for far less.

As it stands I'll probably go to IKEA and buy a plain superking frame (the space! I can't wait!) with whatever mattress seems most comfy in the shop.

AvaLeStrange · 19/04/2016 18:33

My parents & DD have got Myers beds - they were between £300-£500 and are pretty good.

I'd certainly have considered one if we hadn't been able to get the one we've gone for.

SquidgeyMidgey · 19/04/2016 19:51

Whathaveilost our monster is a Hypnos, the only other one we've found to be any good for DH's fragmented back is Vispring. DS has a Laura Ashley Beaumont that I think is very comfortable but it wouldn't be any good for DH but lovely for normal people

IthinkIamsinking · 19/04/2016 20:13

Super king Hypnos mattress...... 1200..... I love it.
Mind you I found a mattress in John Lewis for 15,000!!! Confused

Longdistance · 19/04/2016 20:17

We bought our king size bed with mattress from John Lewis. Only cost £500 with delivery which was excellent.

HerdOfRhino · 19/04/2016 20:37

I really like this thread, reading everyone's memories Smile Flowers

HerdOfRhino · 19/04/2016 20:38

Oh dear, wrong thread! Blush

JessieMcJessie · 19/04/2016 20:41

Do those of you buying beds in IKEA realise that they are an odd size and so you will have to buy your fitted sheets only from IKEA for ever more?

FuckSanta · 19/04/2016 20:55

IKEA do standard sized beds now.

Naoko · 19/04/2016 20:56

That is exactly why I want to buy my bed from IKEA Jessie, I'm tall and I'm sick of my toes sticking out the bottom of my UK bed! Also I'm from the continent and can get my mum to send me some sheets if it comes to it.
