To ask what you think is a reasonable price to pay for a bed?

DM and DF have just ordered a new bed which cost £6000 I was rather shocked as I'd be hard pressed to spend that on a car
They offered me their old mattress which is still in ok condition I looked it up to see if it was suitable for use on my pine frame bed and sadly it's not - however that was £1500 at current price
This isn't about what they spend their money on that is up to them (although they are not that well off) but about is it really worth it?
I sleep ok on a memory foam mattress which cost me around £200 at the time and would still cost me less than £300 if I needed to replace it in the near future

Didn't know that FuckSanta.

Gosh Naoko haven't heard the expression "the continent" for years.

Naoko · 19/04/2016 21:05

I refuse to call it Europe. Britain is in Europe, for all that some people try to deny it. :o [runs away from EU referendum argument]

My bedframe was about £200 from Warren Evans but the mattress was £800 and I got it 15 years ago. It would cost about £1500 now.

I can tell you, it was worth every single penny.

For 6000, I would expect the bed to be made by a carpenter I personally know, of an expensive kind of wood, and with beautiful woodcarving on the head end, at the very least. (And it would be very unreasonable to spend that amount of money on a bed, sadly. I am just not that wealthy.)

It all depends on what kind of bed it is. For my sleeping needs, I'd only pay around 100 for the bed, and perhaps somewhat more than that for the mattress.

Of course you wouldn't say "Europe" and expect people to think you meant a European country outside the UK. But Britain is also part of the continent of Europe, that's why saying "on the continent" fell out of use because it's technically incorrect. Most people I know refer to Europe excluding the UK as "mainland Europe". Or just say the individual country.

Mattreses are massively overpriced apparently (in the region of 90% profit) and they are sold to a model which makes it difficult to haggle and compare.

We have a Millbrook king size divan and mattress, it's still fabulous after about 13 or so years. It was £1600 back then.

it wasn't this one (for Mummamayhem)

Op could you add a wood layer?
I've heard that you can have hardboard cut to size & put it on top of the slats if you need a certain mattress, seems a shame to waste a decent mattress If you need one.
